- The High Sierra Trail is an epic through hike from Crescent Meadow in Sequoia National Park to Mount Whitney. My friend Trevor and I completed this hike in 5 days, August 10-14th, 2023.
This year, the Sierras saw an unprecedented amount of snowfall. The conditions that we experienced in August are similar to those in June of normal years.
I hope that this video helps those that are still planning their hike for this season or would like to do this hike in the future. If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments below.

Really well done video. Thank you for the great content. Congrats on the hike.
Truly an epic 5 day hike ! Also my entire office watched your video and we all agree that you have a special talent for creating excellent videos, and the background music was spot on ! As a result........5 of us are planning to follow in your hiking footsteps ! Thank you !
Thanks for the comment! You’ll love the HST!
I made this same hike 52 years ago. Less snow but massive lightning storm while on the summit. Lots of Saint Elmo’s fire and buzzing on metal objects. Thanks for the memories!
Glad it could bring back the memory… thanks for watching!
Thanks for documenting your adventure! I'm headed up this year on Aug 8th to do the trail.
That’s a great time to do it… enjoy!
Excellent video. A review of your food and gear would be great. I am heading there next July and this video was very helpful.
Looks like it was a great trip! Thanks for sharing the video!
Awesome video man! Thanks for sharing. I hope to do this trail as well as the Rae Lakes Loop in the next couple years. Happy trails 🥾
What an adventure!
Thanks for sharing this! We are looking to hike every mile of trail through Sequoia/Kings (eventually) and this was helpful recon.
Nice job on this video. Well done. Really like your narration. Thumbs up!
Thanks!
Wow !! Great Video 🤩… By far one of the best HST videos I have watched … This is on my list … Thank you !
excellent video
Tyler, Nice trip and excellent video!
Thanks Pete!
Great production! I’m hitting the trail on Thursday!
Thank you, have a great hike!
I had a HST permit for Aug 16-21, but missed it due to work scheduling me on some of those days. Great video, great hike. Congrats.
Thanks! Bummer that work got in the way but may have been for the better with the storm that came in around that time.
My good, best friend is doing this trail August of this year.
Any advice that you have that i can relay to him would be greatly appreciated.
Sure, happy to help. There is some good info in the video…. I can also try to answer any other questions in the comments to help others too.
Awesome video Tyler. Considering doing this trail next year. Would you recommend doing this in more days or did you like your pace? Thanks!
Thanks! I thought we had a good pace… I believe I had a permit for 6 days so we could have slowed down a bit and taken one more day. If you go beyond 5-6 days it becomes a challenge to fit all of your food in the bear can.
@@TylerTownsendTravelmakes sense. Do you know if Ursacks are allowed on the HST?
@@DadCampsI’m not sure… not familiar with those.
what model oakley's are those? great video thx!!
Searching through my e-mail, looks like they are "
Oakley Crossrange Shield Sunglasses OO9387-0331 Black Ink | Prizm Jade Lens"
I bought them from world-of-optics via eBay in 2018.
They are still going strong and I really like the Oakley Prizm lenses.
THANK YOU!!! @@TylerTownsendTravel
Did you pass the Big 5 Lakes? Anything sketchy on the High Sierra Trail? Any scary parts or mostly fine? I saw some videos and it looks like there are some very scary dropoffs. For someone with "height issues" are there any cliffs that you are walking by, or is mostly rolling cliff areas along the path? My knees aren't the greatest, any issues with people with slight knee issues?
You expect there to snow in another 3 weeks?
No; weather, water crossings, snow; definitely steep up and down sections that are hard on knees.
@@TylerTownsendTravel How did you deal with the paths along the cliff, skirting the cliff? Is that a large part of the trail or just short bit? I'm afraid of heights. Any in your group afraid of heights.... i'm just trying to decide if I should do the trail. (I think coming out of that short tunnel is where the cliffs are, right?)
