TESTING THE PUP TENT IDEA IN MY VAN | I had to make a little modification | Did it work? #vandweller
Well, I am pleased to say that I think this is a very great idea! And it can only get better! I use the bare necessities, no outside, heating element. There was a 10° heat difference! Thanks for watching!

There's a woman on CZcams who has designed the next step! She cut out one side of a laundry basket and draped a blanket over her head. It was amazing.

Thanks for watching! Yes, I saw that. Definitely a great way to keep your head and face warm! It’s not necessarily what I would want to do for myself, but it definitely is a great idea! The other thing for me is having to store the laundry basket. It’s just another thing I would have to find a place for. Have a fantastic weekend!🙌🏼😃💯

Reflectix is like Mylar only is double sided with bubble wrap in between without the ruffling noise. It would work even better with a reflectix mat under the sleeping bags. I use it in my van and in my house under my carpet. I lowered the roof panel in the van and slid it up there then reattached the panel back up there. It reflects the heat and cold. I also noticed I slept better in my van than in the house so I built a bed box in the house it’s a plywood box a little larger than my mattress. It has a curtain entrance like a gypsy wagon bed with storage underneath. I love it. I put bookshelves in it and love this space. Hope this helps someone.

    Suggestion:
    1. hang another blanket from door to door..behind the seats.. it will keep you warm.. less space to occupy.... my friend kept his father's double layered flight jacket.. and says it keeps him warm at night even when he's in sleeping bag.
    2. A neck warmer will keep you warm as well... but after you get into your tent/sleeping bag.. pull the neckwarmer over your head and ears.. it will feel much more warm.
    3. Snow mittens are a good addon.
    4. a Hot water bottle with knitted cover.

Have u seen those mummy style sleeping bag suits? They are like a one piece hunting suit but made with sleeping bag material. I bought one for my sister, who is always cold bcuz she has cancer and got one for myself. The only downfall i see is having to take it off when ya gotta pee in the night. But would still be awesome when the power goes out here in Michigan winter weather. Amazon has them. Then you could get those knitted hats that covers yer entire head except the eyes n mouth.

The temp on tree outside is more accurate than the phone temp. Phone temp is from a weather reporting station in your area, maybe miles away, in town or out in open space. I have my own weather ‘station’ and it’s never the same.

Turn the reflective part of those window covers so reflective faces inside. It's not only is better at heat retention inside but light as well. Turn the other way for summer

Thanks watching! Yes, all true. However, I just like the white on the inside because it makes the van appear brighter. Everything in the van is black, so I chose white. But for someone who is in need of serious heat retention or heat reflection, That is the best thing to do. Where I live, I don’t really have to worry about that. Thanks so much for taking time to come! Have a fantastic day!🙌🏼😃💯

I need to do this in my house. I hate using space heaters and I don't have central heat & air. My bedroom is usually outside temps during the winter. Got so cold we all slept in the living room and closed the bedrooms to keep the house warm and was still 30 degrees with the room heater on at night. Why I don't winterized the house? Well it's only cold for a few short weeks. Keeping cool in the summer is more important and it's a southern built house. Winterizing a very small portion would work just fine.

You should use wool military blankets to make the tent or hang them on the walls, we hung wool military blankets with large clips , around our bed when we were in alaska last year. We were warm and the temperature outside was in the teens. Good luck❤ stay warm

Very interesting experiment. I agree on the noise on a thin Mylar emergency blanket when it rattles. Got an emergency tarp that is red on one side & silver on the other that I can use to put on roof of my minivan with silver side up to reflect heat away on a hot day (helps the fridge run). Its original use was intended to wrap the silver side around someone to prevent hypothermia. I looked it up & it’s called a “Insulated Thermal Reflective Tarp” with grommets. I’ll bet that would work better than a moving blanket with the silver side on the inside to reflect body heat back towards the sleeping bag.

I have the sturdy mylar tarp and put it under my bedding. Still crinkled but my temp inside dropped to the 20s. I thought it would make me crazy, but slept toasty warm and it sounded WARM after a bit. I called it my crinoline. Still, I will set up the mylar tarp (I have several) and test it out. They are lightweight. I have a few moving blankets stored away.

Thanks for sharing. In the past, I have used a light cotton sarong over my head and face becuz a cold face/nose will wake me up unhappy every time. Grrr. Even if the rest of me is cozy. It created enough of a warmer air buffer to keep me asleep. But I like the tent better. The temp difference is significant and with nothing so close to my face. 👍🏼

There are tarp clips that could clip on the blanket and ridgeline and then tie them to the grab bars. You could even make it bellow a bit at the top, where the heat will settle. The jackery has a really strong spotlight you can use while your other lights charge. You may find that if there isn’t a 5 watt or more draw on the battery that it will turn itself off, so I always plan to do multiple things at once. Also, I was thinking that if you plugged the fridge in then the fridge will blow out warmer air and the jackery fan will also push out warm air. If you can afford dampRid or a rechargeable dehumidifier, it’s totally worth the money. I use different types of dehumidification for different places and it makes such a difference, since being damp (from condensation, sweat or weather) conducts cold. The windows themselves conduct cold air, so parking where there isn’t as much wind can really help. If possible scout out parking garages, some even have air exchangers where the air will be warmer.

    • @ModernDayPilgrim
      @ModernDayPilgrim  Před 6 měsíci +3

Thanks for watching! Yes, all good points! Yes, the fridge will throw off a little heat, and that would be helpful as well. But not everyone has a refrigerator, and this idea was geared more towards people who don’t have heating options, or very minimal heating options. Kind of bones. I appreciate you taking the time to come! Have a fabulous day!🙌🏼💯😃

I have a couple of indoor/outdoor thermometers similar to yours and I like having them. I’ve had them for less than a year and I’ve already had to change the battery in one of the outdoor units. At home I measure the outside temperature from my screened porch so those units don’t get direct sun, rain or snow on them. At 7:56 in today’s video you show a very comfortable indoor humidity level. That’s good information to have. 👍🎁🎄

When you have the thermometer up against the door , it will read colder , so you don't get a true reading of in car temperature .

Thanks for watching ! So the reason it’s on the floor is because that is the coldest part of the van, and heat rises. So, even when I had it on my armrest off the floor, it was cold. And again, the goal of the video was to make sure everyone knows that the van is not insulated and it’s a bare bones experiment. no outside heating elements or insulation. I appreciate you taking the time to comment! Have a fantastic day!😃🙌🏼💯

You did a wonderful job monitoring your test run.
Would a cigarette lighter plug in electric blanket work overnight in a van that isn't running?

Thanks for watching! Yes, those blankets can run off of a Jackery power station or other type of power station. But this video was just to get the idea that you can stay a little bit warmer if you enclose the space around where you sleep. Thanks for watching, and for taking the time to comment!😃🙌🏼💯

The warm moist air of your breath will rise. The blanket's opening needs to be above your head and not at the end. Some sleeping bags have a snorkel to clear humid breath from making a sleeping bag damp and therefore losing its insulation value

Thanks for watching! If you noticed the very last temperature reading, and humidity reading, was at 8:30 AM. What it showed was that inside the tent the humidity was 81%, and outside the tent. It was 82%. So there was only a 1° change in the humidity from inside the tent to outside the tent. I had so much ventilation inside the tent, because I didn’t close either end closed. Also, I had the windows cracked quite a bit which allowed for more ventilation. The outside humidity was 91 I believe so I think all in all the humidity inside the tent wasn’t worse than the outside the tent. Thanks for taking the time to come in! Have a fantastic day!😃🙌🏼💯

My tent is a plastic waterproof material and I feel condensation on touching the inside walls at the head end. I've got a humidity monitor so will test it tonight. It might be that your two bone dry sleeping bags and blanket are absorbing a little moisture hence the 1% drop? Interesting video....many thanks@@ModernDayPilgrim

I wonder if there is a material that takes a lot of time to absorb heat then dissipates it slowly. warm it in a fire then wrap it and tuck it at your feet for 8 hours and it cools

Clay pots, bricks and some stones can be heated for.this purpose. You can heat several and put them under your camp-bed .

The lower air volume in the tent is easier to heat.

I ordered some heat shields for my Mitsubishi outlander 2023 ( gas) unfortunately they sent me the covers for an electric ( PHEV) which doesn’t fit. So they are getting right size made. My colors are gold ( for the reflectives ) and black for stealth

That is awesome! I am having an issue with condensation in my tent... winter in a tent. I sleep along the side of a tent wall. I made a tent-like covering, my bedding was barely damp and the condensation was minor this morning... it was 34° outside, I don't remember inside (I have a Therma Cell, too, mainly to monitor humidity from MDs 100°, 100% humidity. I kept my little dehumidifier, set it up last evening and hung a Damp Rid. I am rarely too cold with my insulation under my mattress pad and blankets... unless the edge of my bedding gets wet like it did the last two nights! Question... the next time you video at night can you show the outside of your van with lights on and the whichamacallits up? Merry Christmas to you, Clem and all the family!

Just getting through all my hundreds of comments! Thank you for your patience, lol😂🙌🏼💯 are you talking about my window covers? To see what they look like from the outside? If I do that with lights on shining at them, you will see the reflect for sure. Because I’m shining a light on them. Through the window. Believe it or not, when I camp and I stay in parking lots sometimes I park right under the lights. That way if I have any lights on in my vehicle, they don’t stand out as much. I hope you’re doing well, sorry to get to this comment so late. But better late than never! Have a fantastic weekend! 😃🙌🏼💯

Oh, no worries, comment when you can! Yes, that's what I meant. I park under a light, too. It makes sense that would cause light on the inside to be less noticeable from outside! Thanks! (I'm doing well, hope you are, too!)

You need to have fresh air flow in your vehicle. It’s imperative. If you don’t allow for air in and air out, your vehicle will become full of condensation. You need to allow the air to vent so the moisture can escape.

Do you think sleeping in your system would help contain moisture/condensation? Just a thought.

    • @ModernDayPilgrim
      @ModernDayPilgrim  Před 6 měsíci +1

Thanks for watching! You’ve got to keep ventilation in your vehicle by cracking your windows so it can escape. Which is what I do. Allowing for circulation in the van makes it more comfortable in the van. Hope this helps! Have a fabulous day! 😃🙌🏼💯

$35 at most compared to $50 per set of window covers through heat shield.bYou can buy a roll of reflective at home Depot & cut to fit also. A lot cheaper. 45 x 100. You can get suction cups if needed for this. But from what I've seen they fit right in when you cut it to fit..

From military experience - Acrylic is best for retaining heat, like a sleeping bag liner. From Nursing experience - 90% of your heat is lost through your head. Wear a hat.

Thanks for watching! I do wear a hat for sure! It’s so funny you say acrylic blanket! 😂 I used to use these for my kids beds when they were little now respectively, 31,30,24 and 17, and my older 2 said to me …
“MOM! What’s with these blankets?! They are like the kind people have in prison!” 😳😂
I said… “How in the world do you know what kind of blankets they use in prison?”
They said… “Theybonly use crunchy blankets for prisoners and these are crunchy!”
Needless to say, I was in hysterics! 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
      Have a fantastic day! 😃🙌🏼💯
