  • This lesson is all about your jazz improvisation and about how to make it melodic without having to play fast and complicated.

I showed this to the students in my jazz/gypsy guitar coaching program this week and they loved it so much that I decided to share it with you as well.
This is something that you can implement in your playing right away! I demonstrate it on the jazz standards I Can't Give You Anything But Love and Pennies From Heaven, but you can use this idea over any tune that you like.
    Cheers,
    Yaakov

You have captured the essence of one of the most important ideas in jazz...at least according to Louis Armstrong: play around with the melody. So many advanced jazz players throw it away and seem to want to demonstrate their virtuosity instead of spicing up the melody. I believe this is part of the reason why jazz is not very popular these days. Too much noodling, not enough melody. Bravo, Maestro, and thank you for the inspiration.

Yeah, Louis Armstrong has gotta be the best at playing around the melody. Django loved louis' playing.I wonder if anybody has translated Armstrong solo's to guitar. That would be a master class!

      Absolutely, Mike.
You can definitely use this to create a breakthrough in your improvisation. Have you seen the discussions I had with Evan Christopher on my blog? Especially part 2 -

I never thought about how simple vocal melodys are,and that they actually are the heart of a song. Some of the greatest sounds I heard django play are simple, and feel the best. Triads. There are a lot blues guitar hot shots that play a million notes at lightning speed, but BB King beats them all with 3 or 4 notes.

This is a great idea, and with imagination can be implemented in many ways. Beautiful so thank you very much I am going to try the theory out with a few songs.
