  • Jumping on the 'comparisons' bandwagon - here are Joseph Joachim (recording dated 1903, at age 72) and his grand-niece Jelly d'Arányi (recording date 1924, age 31) playing a pretty parlour piece by Joachim. Note d'Arányi's fidelity to many aspects of Joachim's style (Gramophone rated this recording of hers as 'pious'), however what differences there are could help illuminate for us this long-gone generational divide...

Thanks a lot for proving us with this really interesting comparison. I have listened to Joachim's recordings numerous times. I tried in vain to enjoy, or at least appreciate his playing, and failed to imagine what his Mendelssohn or Brahms might have sounded like. Jelly d'Arányi's performance here seems so much less static, more alive and full of temperament. When I hear Joachim himself play, I get the idea why he didn't feel the need to support players such as Kreisler and Elman. He chose to help Franz von Vescey instead.

The renditions are strikingly similar. If anything, D'Aranyi seems to exaggerate some of Joachim's tendencies, particularly in portamento and rubato use. Her intonation veers in the direction of Just intonation, like Joachim's, but she seems to be more generous in her vibrato than Joachim. Thanks for the fascinating post!
