DON’T Make This Mistake With Your Nitro Finish Guitar!

- If you own a Nitrocellulose (nitro finish) finished guitar like my Paul Reed Smith Silver Sky, you NEED to understand my mistake. Certain materials will react very poorly with nitro if they make contact for extended periods of time. This usually happens with guitar hangers and stands. Make sure you’re using a stand or hanger that is rated “Nitro safe.” Be really careful, though. I’ve read some horror stories about “nitro safe” stands that still cause issues. Fortunately, there are many guitars that won’t have this issue, BUT nitro is common and often preferred as a finish…so, make sure you check!

Everybody knows that the more damage to the finish the better the guitar will sound. That’s why reliced guitars are so popular. Oh yeah and it makes you a better guitar player too.

Wrap any stand with strips of cotton. I have a Gibson Custom that had burn spots in the clear from a previous owner doing something similar. You can wet sand the back and edge of the guitar with 3M trizact sponge in 5000 grit followed by 8000 grit (in this case I believe 8000 alone would suffice) Then follow with hand buffing using microfiber and Meguiars Fine cut cleaner > Swirl Remover in succession and top with tech wax or hybrid ceramic wax.. It will not damage the finish and should remove any trace of what I see there. I've removed worse, it cleans the paint surface totally and gently removes the affected nitro. I have refurbished the paint this way on numerous Gibsons. Do the back of the necks as well. 8000 makes them glass like and ultra smooth to the touch.
I may have to give that a try. The worst residual is right above the trem cavity (where the stand hit the most). So glad I noticed it when I did! Thanks for watching and commenting. Appreciate it.
Weather change will also create problems with nitro moisture change can do this also giving a milky looking appearance . Leaving your guitar in a case will cause the nitro to relic your tuners, which in a way is kind of cool if you go for a vintage look. Severe whether change can actually crack a nitro finish all the way to the wood, especially when the guitar is newer.

This is what’s happened to my silver sky; I’ve got cracks on the back and I’m not sure what to do to fix it
My black strat body finish went like a cracked eggshell and milky bits started falling off

Good call on those stands. I got lucky. The finish is still weird, especially in the tremolo cavity on the back, but it’s not too noticeable!
I heard about this but it hasn't happened to any of my guitars, though I did once buy a Hofner Shorty that had very similar looking damage when it arrived. I exchanged it for a red one that was clean.

I have a nitro finished Fender AVRI 62 Jazzmaster I bought new in 2003. I had it rested a lot on a red faux sued couch and after a few months I noticed there was red color on the places it rested on the couch. It absorbed the red dye from the couch material. If I had a poly finish it would have never happened. I would never do that on purpose but since it was natural and not over the top it doesn't bother me. The guitar fell and hit the bottom of a swivel chair and chipped a small piece on the back near the neck plate. Now that bothers me but the red doesn't. Now I have a reliced guitar even though I wasn't planning on it.
Luckily, I was able to get most of the surface level stuff out, but there's still some damage around the trem cavity! I know what you mean about some damage being "ok" and other damage really bothering you.

Nitro finishes never cure. Not like people think. They continue to shrink ,which is actually slow degradation! They are subject to weather changes as well..is all this bad?? No IMO..
Polyester or polyurethane 2K finishes are more like plastic and actually are a resin more then anything. Is this bad? No imo..
Each have their own goods and bads for the purpose they are used for. On guitars I think poly types look thick. Polyester is usually not thick , polyurethane tends to be. They are very durable !
Nitro can be thinner and doesn't shine with the same thick look as poly. It's a hard but fragile finish. Easy to chip, it can melt to plastics, certain liquids can hurt it but it's actually a great finish for guitars. Does it change the sound. That's subjective!!
So we don't need a wooden guitar then if it doesn't matter. Just make them all solid plastic if the wood doesn't have anything to do with tone

Problem is that plastic doesn’t respond to tension the way wood does, most plastics would warp
Metal necks have been done but that’d be far too heavy for a body, they also exclude the truss rod adjustment
So far, structurally, wood is just the most reasonable material to mass produce guitars with, in order to keep them feeling like guitars & operating like guitars, the acoustic tone would also change & that would trip up some players but magnetic pickups do not pickup the acoustic tone of the instrument that goes to the amplifier
This is a very good point to be careful about. Nitro is the standard finish on boutique, hand made and upscale acoustic instruments, from violins to mandolins, guitars and banjos. Poly is pretty much relegated to the most modern and lower end instruments, esp. electric guitars. These also might have polyester finishes which is different.
They are beautiful finishes, but certainly come with some quirks when compared to the other options. Thanks for watching!
Got my first Nitro guitar today ( Gibson SG standard) and right onto a foam stand it went. THANK GOD I happened across this video. I would've been so pissed if next time I picked it up there was black staining all over a new $1,800 instrument.
Glad it could help save someone! Every finish is different and reacts differently to different things. Get a good nitro-safe stand with a solid review track record. Also, be careful with clip-on headstock tuners. They can be trouble, in some cases, too.
Wish I knew this 10 years ago lol Put my first Gibson, a SG Standard too, on an inappropriate stand for a little while and the headstock is permanently damaged. Nothing big, doesn't bother me anymore, but wish I did things differently
@@TomButwin I noticed my tuner had rubber on it too, so i just taped it.
My son has an nitro SG.. this happened on the neck. It reacted with the finish snd you can feel it now.
The silicone rubber is what gasses out into the lacquer. This is what causes both staining and stickiness with the stand. I've even seen guitar shops with the same problem with brand new guitars.
You can restore the glossy finish using a microfiber cloth and McGuiars Ultimate Rubbing compound, McGuiar’s Swirl-X, and McGuiar’s Ultimate Polish. These are automotive products that are safe to use on a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. I have used them to fix finish dulling from skin oils on a Martin HD-28, Gibson 1960 Hummingbird, and to fix damage to Gibson SG caused by a Peterson Stroboclip that I accidentally left on the headstock inside its case. There are videos others have posted on YT on how to use these on a nitro guitar finish.

@@diderkamal1 Depending on how bad the cracks are, a luthier might be able to repair it. Some people pay a lot of money to get a relic finish. It will probably be an expensive repair. Shouldn’t affect the sound.
I don't see any videos. Can this fix staining caused by a nylon strap ?
@@ajdoyle9559 don’t know. If it is a discoloration it depends on how deep into the finish it penetrated. My guess is the strap may have melted into the finish in which case you would likely want to have a professional look at it.
Thanks for this video, I have a stain on my thin skin strat headstock from a capo being left on it. Can you please tell me what proceess/products you used to fix this? Thank you!
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to really fix it. There was a residue that I was able to wipe off, but the portions of the finish around the trem cavity were permanently damaged and discolored.
A similar issue happened with Snark tuners… not sure if it’s fixed, but best not to leave them on the headstock permanently (thinking of you, my fellow home-players). Otherwise a great tuner.
Great call. One more reason I don’t like the clip on tuners (but they are highly convenient, I can’t deny).
I bought my first Gibson last year. It was an ebony 2016 Gibson '61 Reissue SG. I didn't know shit about nitro finishes at the time, but I did notice a very concerning stand rash near the headstock, which was already there when I bought it. It was really bad, and unfortunately very permanent. I don't have it anymore - I've since acquired a 2005 Les Paul Studio Faded that I enjoy a lot more than I did with the SG.
Yeah, it’s a really wild characteristic of those finishes. Not fun to experience. Glad you found one that speaks to you more!
Do you know if the nitro finish cracks easier? I have a 2021, moc sand gloss silver sky and it has little cracks in the finish in various locations. SOme of them I know were me, but just this morning I was double checking for cracks and found a new one, and can't figure out how it happened. And yes there not underneath the finish, I can feel them.
It’s a super thin (by design) finish, so it’s definitely more vulnerable to wear and tear. It’s kind of the nature of the beast, I guess.

If there are extreme fluctuations, any finish or wood is going to suffer. If it’s just a normal and fairly stable environment, I don’t think it’d have that big of an effect on the nitro.
@@willmalisch Maybe you know this already as it's been a year, but it's called "finish checking." Search for that and you'll find all types on info on it. You see it a lot on old guitars.
I left a cheap fender black strap on my new nitro finished bass and it stained it after about a week. Not nice wear either, train track black dots on a surf green bass. Is there any way to get a stain out once it's happened ?
Really difficult. There's still residue and permanent damage on mine, unfortunately. Luckily, it's on the back and inner edging of the tree cavity, so it doesn't bother me too much.
The rubberized spot on top of the stand had major finish in my Strat melt right below the neck plate. Luckily I was able to wet sand it and recover at 98%. After some hand polishing and buffing I was able to restore the damage. Someone has to know where the damage occurred to spot it.
I had this happen on a Gibson J45 Custom Koa.... 40 out of 79 and it ate through the neck finish on the head and through the finish on the bottom of the guitar...... super unfortunate

Ahh yes this happened to me to on my tele! Two nice little black lines on the bottom where the stand met the guitar. Luckily as far as I can tell on my strat it’s either hidden by the black or the sunburst or just didn’t happen. Regardless a bit frustrating but now I use hand towels and old socks to sit between the rubber of the stand and the guitar. I also recently got a Hercules mini folding stand which is (supposedly) nitro safe! That being said I feel like now I’d rather just stick with the towels and socks just in case!
I think I might just cover everything in towels and blankets from this point on lol
@@TomButwin haha I just used old socks and towels I wasn’t using to cover the contact points (bottom parts and neck holder). From my understanding you want thick cotton cloth so it’s a natural fabric and is thick enough that it can’t bleed through or something. I caught the nitro burn on my tele much later than you did on your Silver Sky, so I have some permanent black marks melted into the finish 😭 nothing noticeable really but the fact that I know is enough lol
Highway One Tele? Those were nitro. Most modern Fenders are Polyurethane finishes which are impervious to things like this.

There should really be a disclaimer on things like this & also how extreme temp changes check the finish & other do's & don'ts . Everybody has to learn at some point & it sucks to learn the hard way on any instrument
Totally agree. Although, as I admitted in the video, upon researching this is more common knowledge than not. Although, I had never thought about it or heard! Lol So, didn’t help me much.
Temp/humidity are more obvious (even though many guitars are neglected in those areas as well), but a chemical reaction from a stand that’s MEANT for guitars is…well, whatever lol. Thankfully, the permanent damage isn’t too noticeable. Hope my video helps others avoid this!
if you have a guitar with a nitro finish, even in the best weather conditions, sooner or later the finish will check.
@@TomButwin There should totally be a disclaimer. So much can go wrong with these finishes, it's totally not worth it unless it's used to make a flamed top look more appealing, every rookie is gonna make some of these mistakes.

I’ve got a 30 year old strat that I bought shortly after starting to play. The sales guy told me about the poly finish and how indestructible it was. At the time that was a selling feature to me. But now that I’ve bee playing it for 39 years and it still looks new, I wish it showed wear. I have no idea about breathability or sound penalties, I prefer wear to show.

It could have been worse! There's certainly something to that natural wear and tear that can happen on a guitar...especially when your playing is the reason for it.
I’m knocking on wood but all my stands are cheap and I have like 9 Les Pauls no issue yet. BUT I just bought an R9 and it had stand rash at the throat of the headstock(undisclosed btw) and that was fairly distressing. It’s bad for my OCD that’s for sure. I’ll have to upgrade my stands eventually I guess.

Happy I could help! There are nitro-safe stands out there, but honestly, any stand could cause an issue if you leave the guitar there long enough. Proceed with caution lol. What color S2 McCarty did you get?

Unfortunately, probably not. Temperature and humidity can really affect a lot of aspects of any guitar. I’d ensure that the guitar is in a consistent controlled environment going forward and have a guitar tech do a setup on it to make sure the action/string height and intonation is all still solid.
You would have to refinish it.
I have a red Geetar and brought it home and saw light black lines across the bottom kinda like a line I thought in was a crack repair but it ends up in a swirl. Freaked me out can’t feel anything can’t be a crack.

I use the K&M 17581 Heli 2 Electric Guitar Stand - Cork stands that haven't marred any of my expensive guitars, including my Nitro LsL XT4 custom.
Those stands are the shit, they fit anywhere and don't put any tension on the neck, 10/10.
I actually had one of these black foam stands stain the back of my US made G&L. It is a poly finish and somehow the foam ate into it

Duct tape on the touching areas of the stand solves the problem, had the same with the back of my LP studio, black ducttape! you dont see it and it doesn't react with the nitro finish.

This is why I built my own rack out of oak, and used cork on the points of contact.

I didn’t know this but I give each of my guitars a run down with Classico Alfredo sauce every night so I think that counterattacks any negative effects from the guitar stands or small Italian children upon which I my guitars usually rest atop.
I started playing guitar back in 2016 and I never bought a nitro cellulose guitar but I knew not to put nitrocellulose against plastic

I knew about it but didn't know my fender folding stand wasn't nitro safe until I left a customer's one of a kind guitar on that stand overnight!!! Luckily I was restoring the guitar anyway and I got the damage out.

First thing I noticed about, (well maybe 2nd noting sustain) was feeling my nitro Les Paul jr reverb through the body. Very cool as I've only played poly guitars before that.
Poly finish can actually add rigidity to a guitar as it dry extremely hard. Harder than nitro.
That can actually improve sustain. Not really the same as a dead or dull piece of plastic

Lol it is not! Although, I'm tempted to get one of those new colors they just dropped. Would be tough to sell this one after very publicly screwing up the finish!

I had something similar happen I saved up for months to get my dream Gibson sg and didn’t know either and melted the finish on the neck at the headstock. It’s not bad but I know it’s there.

Definitely a solution. I’ve heard of people using t-shirts and such.
I used to think that factory relic jobs were the dumbest things in the world (why pay extra for something you can do yourself)... Until you realize that it completely eliminates the "mental block" of babying a guitar. I'm one of the types that kicks myself for nicking a guitar for not being careful enough (to each his/her own). But having a guitar that already feels used and abused makes me focus more on playing and less on my surroundings. Also, a factory relic guitar will never lose its value the more you beat it up. While a NOS guitar with a couple chips caused by you will instantly lose its value (I'm not into the resale market, but I'm sure others are).
This is a big part of why I’ve only really ever bought second hand guitars! I’m not a collector, and they get used, so I couldn’t deal with scratching or damaging them. Totally understand where you’re coming from.
Exactly! Poly finishes look great but any chips or nick look rubbish - nicks and dings on nitro look great and are wayyy easier to repair if you wanted to.
Comes with nitro finishes. It's part of the "charm".

Another point after shaving if you have used any type of aftershave WASH YOUR HANDS before touching or playing your guitar it will mark the finish 😢👍🏽👍🏽

Well, this is known as “stand rash” among other things. Yes, nitrocellulose finishes do react to certain stands or the foam on them.
DuPont developed nitro a long, long time ago for auto finishes and the “breathing” myth is just that, a myth.
There is no scientific basis for this.
You wouldn’t want the finish on a car to breathe as oxidation would occur very quickly. Therefore, a nitro finish on a guitar won’t breathe either. The wood will as it is a living thing.
There are many folks out there that perceive certain things regarding nitro and that’s just fine.
You can prefer the tone of a guitar finished in nitro but that tone is not because that finish is breathing.
I prefer nitro because it ages quicker due to the fact that it’s much thinner so there’s that.

This is partly why I use 2k clear on 98% of the guitars I build.
DON'T use isopropyl alcohol to clean nitro either. It will F-up your finish (don't ask me how I know).

I really don't think the alleged benefits of a nitro finish (it's more tone wood stuff for me) make it worth. You can't even throw shade on a guitar with nitro finish, that it will get a stain.

@@TomButwinit’s just that an old poly guitar chips and doesn’t look nice aged , they look great if mint but they don’t wear like old gibsons or fenders .. that’s why people try to repair chips on poly guitars not on nitro guitars … I took the nitro off my silver sky rolled shoulder and dirt soiled it in a week due to mosquito repellent residue on my hands … my 94 57 AVRi is poli mint with one annoying chip .. my 94 les paul looks like it’s 30 years old … and I bought it brand new in 94 😉
The mistake I made was wearing a pink t shirt while playing my white silver sky! It went all pink on the back of it! 😳
Luckily it came off with some guitar polish 😮💨😅😂

When I played one for the first time like 3 years ago in a shop, it kind of went over my head and I wrote it off as just another Strat copy…BUT, when I took the plunge and bought mine, it was magical. The hype is real and I absolutely love the guitar. It’s my #1 electric, for sure.

What guitar polish did you use to clean it ?
Collectors hang their guitars up, it works well for long term storage.
This is precisely why I wouldn't buy a nitro finish guitar.
I was about to buy a PRS S2 594 until I found they'd changed to nitro from poly.
nitro is an extremely volatile finish and 'pretty' is subjective. If you want it to be clean you gotta be careful. Rubber on wall hangers used to be the worst and nobody got it back in the day apparently because i've seen hundreds of Gibsons with the melted lacquer at the base of the headstocks. I used to use surgical tubing for my stands but the companies eventually figured it out. Always thought that was just the most obvious thing to see that's wrong with your product.

@@TomButwin I’d say when it comes to electricity and wood the pickups are most important. The mythological tone finish is only available for well-made acoustic instruments. Now the aesthetics! And feel? That’s all up to you. Design and what appeals is subjective.

Well, the finish on the back is still not the same, bubbled, and chipped a bit around the trem cavity. So, I guess it depends on how literally you take “ruined.” Just don’t trust a guitar stand if it’s a nitro guitar, I guess.
It can be easily buffed out to a mirror finish...rub the whole back with some very fine sandpaper/scotchbrite type thingy to dull the surface a bit and level it and then buff it out to the shine you want with rubbing compounds..that being said it shows how stupid those old guitar myths are...that guitar makers still finish those instruments with that soft cancerous crap that pretty much never cures cause the urban legends say a harder finish...dulls the tone...while there are even aluminum guitars out there that sustain forever...i have to give it to them though..since they convinced players to spend 2000 or more for a solid body electric instrument then more power to them.....

Dude that leather strap also reacts with the nitro finish, so think twice before putting it in the guitar case with the strap on or you'll get a pretty nasty gum stain
The list of things that can affect a nitro finish is staggering lol. Luckily, that strap doesn’t seem to affect it. It’s always on the guitar and has been for quite awhile. Good call though. It definitely can.

I unfortunately wasn't able to fix it. Some of the residue that started to build up was able to be wiped off, but the parts of the finish around the trem cavity were damaged permanently. I wish I had a solution!

I know there are good arguments both ways, but if durability is the main concern, it certainly seems like poly would give you that.

Polly beats Nitro in durability, longevity, toxicity, and of course cost. Honestly, I can't find anything that Nitro does better than Polly that I can confirm is true. I see all the people telling themselves that Nitro sounds better than Polly, but I can't find any actual evidence that proves it, just peoples personal opinion..

This video popped back up in my recommendations so I stared watching it, and I was like "hey, I think I have watched this video before" I scroll down and see these comments from me 6 months ago lol. I was about to comment a solution for the guitar stand to not hurt Nitro Finishes, its simple but Ive always done it to mine and never had a issue. I buy a little fabric and wrap it around where ever the guitar is going to make contact with the stand. I am sure if I was more crafty, I could do a much better job, but a few wraps of cloth seems to protect my guitar necks on my Nitro finish guitars, and it doesn't seem to make things less stable. I have one of those Fender stands myself, and I used silk on the back and jersey on the bottom so it would have some kind of grip lol. It works for me, though to be honest I have owned Nitro Finished guitars in the past, but I don't now. I use that fix on my wall hangers as well, since its the guitars weight holding it in place and not friction.

Cheap paint, only reason they still use it is because they use to use it before. That’s the only reason. Makes no difference at all. Plug it it, the magnetic on the pick ups don’t care if the paint is poly or nitro, it’s pick ups metal sting vibration.

I use nitrocellulose on acoustics I build ... but an electric ? It's nonsense in my book .. you wouldn't hear the difference with a naked ear... especially on hardwoods that are 5/4 or thicker... they don't vibrate enough to matter anyway... you can literally stick wound pickups on a shovel and make it sound good to the public ..( sound familiar ? 😂

PRS are known for soft finishes. Not a quality finish. Definitely nowhere near the finishes on Strat, Schecter, Gibson, etc.

There's no such thing as "a lacquer" - there's no other finish made with this formulation. Lacquer isn't a generic term and is only formulated with nitrocellulose. Be as that may nitrocellulose isn't the only thing that lacquer is made from. And calling this "nitro" is ignorant as "nitro" refers to NITROUS OXIDE. And the type of finish has absolutely nothing to do with the sound of your guitar any more than the colour does! This too is ignorant. It's because all the pre-CBS Fender snobs think that there's some type of magic in the paint just because it's what Fender used back when they first started making guitars and amps. Lacquer is made from tree gum spirits which is what the cellulose refers to - cellulose fibers in the finish. This is a weak spots as it allows things through the finish. This is because it leeches into the holes in the paint surface. It's not truly a solid paint as finish touch ups are nearly impossible to hide with telltale witness lines between old and new resprays.
This is because it's and ORGANIC finish. Unlike acrylic which the imbeciles of the automotive paint industry call their product in an attempt to gain the confidence of automotive manufacturers to use the new DuPont paint lines offered in the mid nineteen fifties. However that may be it's NOT LACQUER. But polyester was formulated with higher solids from hydrocarbons in the late nineteen sixties and they have proven themselves to be much better suited for mass production and resist most household chemicals. What happened with this guitar is the same thing that happens with lacquer which would never happen with an acrylic finish.
The gassing out of the silicone rubber parts of the pads on your guitar stand leech into the surface of the lacquer as it's organic in the nature of it's formulation. This will happen every time. I've read about other people having the same problem but I don't use guitar stands. I prop my guitars against the wall or an amplifier when I'm only pausing for a moment. But the rest of the time they are in a gig bag or a guitar case to prevent this from happening to my guitars.

Would you ask your WIFE to sit in a weird chair, meant for Spanish women double her size? No way! You should put your guitar in the hard case, when you don't play it. Make this a routine. Do it always. Or accept that you will, one day, see somebody breaking your guitar. When you're careless, BEEEEP happens.
I'm unfamiliar with that type of chair, but you're probably right on the hard case thing. I wish I had one for the Silver Sky.
