Honestly I'm still obsessed with this one, and despite the clear influences, despite the lifting of riffs, despite the overall very familiar tone and style, it's just So. Much. Gosh. Darn. Fun!

Good review! I also hear the Haken and Dream Theater influences a lot in this but I wouldn't go as far as saying they're a rip off as I feel they're more of a stylistic influence than directly taking their compositions (maybe there are a couple riffs and chord sequences that get a little too close).
I thought the vocals sounded a bit like Devin Townsend rather than Daniel Gildenlow but I hear what you're saying there.
To me, this is the best debut album I've heard since I heard Others by No One's Book 1: Dr. Breacher back in 2017.

I met the guitarist James when I saw him play with The Reticent back in April. I was super excited when this dropped and this is in my top 10 of the year. Also, if it was available in physical format, I absolutely would pick it up that way.

Just discovered this band today. I view the heavy leaning as a homage. A bit much? Sure, but I'm fine with it. Mike Portnoy and Dream Theater are actually fans of the band, so no lawsuit in sight 😆 Great insightful review! New sub😃

I really enjoy this album and The Anchoret's. I don't really see the dependence on their influences on this one. But I've never agreed with the idea that prog must push boundaries always. This is a good album in the ballpark of a Haken with some similar sections but it's very much it's own thing.

I can definitely see your criticisms, but personally, as an absolute obsessed Haken die-hard, I can´t agree with how blatantly you say they were ripped off on Opus. DT stuff, yeah, can more or less agree with that. But Haken, especially Visions, ehhhh for me it´s really gotta be with squinted eyes to call a rip-off. If anything, I personally think this album to be one of the most ORIGINAL releases in this niche lately. Maybe we just feel differently about that point, and that´s awesome - gotta keep discussion alive after all! :D
But hey, apart from that, after 7 years in the making it really shines as a new gem in the niche! - Even if I definitely see the need for some re-structuring as well.

I love this album. They definitely wear their influences on their sleeves, but as a huge fan of that style of prog, I really don't mind. I don't think I'd go as far to say they're completely ripping off DT and Haken though, it's more just an influence I think. But yeah, easy top 10 album of the year, maybe even top 5.
Also, would love to know your thoughts on Omnerod's latest album. That one really blew me away, and is another contender for aoty for me.

I like this one. dream and theater inspired certainly. I don't hear it as much of a straight rip off. I think it has a good vibe and its a fun listen. I do feel like the last two three songs could ve been edited down into a single closer.

Great review, agreed that modern prog metal is still a little stuck around 2010 lol 👌
I do really dig this album though.
I agree they lean heavily -sometimes a little too much - on their DT and Haken influences. I wouldn’t say it’s to the point of plagiarism myself, but it is strong. It’s ironic though because the type of prog metal they’re tapping into is IMO the Rush->DT->Haken aesthetic, and all of those bands wear their influences very heavily on their sleeves. Especially in their debut albums: Rush sounded like a Led Zeppelin tribute band (with a bass tone taken directly from Chris Squire), DT sounded like if Iron Maiden tried to make Rush album, and Haken sounded like a quirky British DT. So I’m excited to see what Nospūn comes up with for their follow up. Apparently a lot of Opus was written several years ago too, so it will be interesting to see what their current writing sounds like and with newfound confidence.

I really like this Album. My biggest concern was, although I like 4D Printing, I found it a little bit displaced right before Within the Realm of Possibility. I find the flow of the album much more fitting without that track. Have you checked out the new East of the Wall. In my opinion it really fits in the line of the records you reviewed lately and I enjoy it even a little bit more than this Nospun Album

When you decide to argue the album or some riffs/motives "blatant rip off", it would help to support that argument with a few examples. You give none. The way you are saying it, it comes across as sour criticism to me unfortunately, and so you get a dislike from me.

🤦‍♂️Oh here we go again, yet another A typical same old, same old prog as a style by numbers. It REALLY is getting boring now. Nothing more needs to be said.
