  • On Saturday, June 10th, 2023, we find former Jones & Laughlin 0-4-0T #58 (lovingly referred to as "The Rolling Ingot" because of its solid steel frame and, consequently, high weight) running public trips on the J&L Narrow Gauge Railroad in Youngstown, Ohio. Come along with me, as we take in the sights and sounds of this beautifully restored 1937 Porter locomotive! We'll also take a look at the progress on the restoration of her sister #57, as well as a work extra pulled by our Brookville gas powered switcher #64.
Thanks to Josh Cohen of Coal & Steel Photography for allowing me to use his shot of me running J&L 58 in the intro, and for holding the camera while I climbed into 57's firebox! He does great photography work, and has an awesome photo gallery, which you can check out here: www.coalandsteelphoto.com/
If you would like to visit the J&L NG Railroad, we are operating every Saturday from 10am-2pm in June, July, September, and October. Located at 2261 Hubbard Road in Youngstown, we also offer the J&L 58 Experience, which lets YOU operate 58 for the day! For more information, visit youngstownsteel.org .

Hearing that locomotive sound off and chug past will NEVER get old! :) It's going to be absolutely crazy when 2 of them, 3 of them, or possibly even 4 of them might run up the hill together ;)

For as small of a locomotive as 58 is, she sure makes a lot of noise! Can't wait to see how the other Porters turn out!

Do you know the weight of No. 58? It must be massive with that solid steel chassis.
