The origin of the Purple Heart medal dates back to General George Washington, who authorized those wounded in battle to wear a purple ribbon on their uniform. The current medal design dates from 1917.
This song actually began as an older song called "Nightchild" which was written prior to Sabaton adopting a historical war theme. The song was renamed "Purple Heart" and the lyrics were rewritten for the album Primo Victoria. Par and Joachim wrote "Nightchild" while drinking and playing video games late one night, and neither has any idea what the lyrics actually mean. "Nightchild" was eventually released on the album Re-Arm.
