  • The video I'm reacting to in this video was requested shortly after it was released. I had already watched the video and didn't want do an unfair, preplanned reaction video so I sat on it until I forgot what was said. I was just sent a request to react to this video again and since I've forgotten what was said, now is a good time. Enjoy, with me, a reaction to Deity Microphone's video "How To Be A Boom Operator".

    Thank you so much for doing this video! I watched this as my primary source of how to boom but the overhead parallel was really killing me😂

      i'm obviously not a pro - set will hate me, when the rubber decides to jump across the frame... was lucky so far though

    • @SoundSpeeds
      @SoundSpeeds  Před rokem +1

      I've known people to use rubber bands but no pro I know does. Probably because it needs to be closer to the tip of the windscreen. I've seen commonly a 1/4" wide piece of paper tape placed on the mic end.

    I commend Deity for making the video. It's doubtful that anyone tagged (i.e. "dude you're our boom operator now") with using Deity equipment will have watched the video.

    So you mentioned shotguns having problems when background noise is uneven from one side to the other. If you didn't have access to a second boom, how would you go about dealing with that?

    • @SoundSpeeds
      @SoundSpeeds  Před rokem

      You may have to go more square or play the axis from a different angle. You might also talk to the mixer and if one person is off camera, let them go so you can dig in with the boom on the noisier angle.

  • @theneutralgroundpodcast

    Question: it seems to me from the various sound production videos I’ve watched that boom operators are expected to know how to mix (I’m using mix in the broad sense of the term, including end production mixing), but mixers (the profession) are not expected to know how to boom.
    First question: does my question make sense?
    Second: is this the understanding on professional sets?
    Thanks for the great content.

    • @SoundSpeeds
      @SoundSpeeds  Před rokem

      Boom operators mic with their booms all the time and you are correct, not all mixers boomed. Is what the case on professional sets?

    • @theneutralgroundpodcast
      @theneutralgroundpodcast Před rokem +1

      @@SoundSpeeds Thanks for the reply. My second question is probably either too nuanced or nonsense. I was just interested in the culture of professional sound on a set. Is it common knowledge that you can call a boom in for mixing duty, but you can’t necessarily call in a mixer for proper booming? You and Sarah mention the “utility” in this video, but that seems like a different job than mixer or boom operator. Is the utility expected to be able to know how to do both mixing and booming at least at an adequate level?
      Again, thank you for the interesting content.

    • @SoundSpeeds
      @SoundSpeeds  Před rokem +1

      Yes, a utility needs to be able to jump in and boom if needed or take over the mixing console if the mixer has stepped away. Anyone on the production sound team can cover another member of their team but usually the boom op is most valuable in set booming so they will stay there. In today's modern workflow involving multiple cameras, it's common to need a second boom and that's the utility who will rerate to boom op for the day.

    14:31 if you were to aim for a certain point on the person, assuming the following wouldn't interfere with lighting, etc., would you aim for 45 degrees and pointing at a person's chin?

    • @SunriseWaterMedia
      @SunriseWaterMedia Před rokem

      Oh, you answered one part -- aim for the nose 👍 25:40

    • @SoundSpeeds
      @SoundSpeeds  Před rokem +1

      Depends. Many boom operators fail to extend the boom all the way out to the mouth and short them. I'm a fan of nailing the mouth so if you're slightly off, you're still within the pattern

    The Diety guy is off putting and he is so shabbily dressed on camera. The flood of cheap gear has brought a bunch of non-broadcast experienced noobs into every market that suck up all the filler corporate gigs because other industries still go for lowball, hypey youngsters. Personally I had to slog thru decades of local broadcast tv to earn the pro rates. Now a bunch buddies make a youtube ‘film’ and declare they are directors. Sigh, still I await my sudden death on location instead of a comfy retirement.
