    I am a part-time watchmaker live in Vietnam. The movement in DW, I bought from Chinese's trader for 30usd/1kg. Yes you heard it, they sell it not by piece, but by bulk with kg as a measure. 80% of those movement will die in 1-1,5 years; 15% die in 6-12 months; 5% die under 6 months. And I never bought more than 5kg to benefit from the "15% discount for every 5kg". Just want to share, sorry for my English.

      @7/11 WAS A PART TIME JOB He's right. Miyota movements are super cheap (not every one is, but the lower tier quartz ones in the DW are). Miyota says they are manufactured in Japan, but as with everything, there is usually a hint that indicates that some of the production is done in China.

      Nonsense. DW movement is cheap but not as 80% die in under 2 years. Otherwise DW would be in bankruptcy right now as their warranty is 2 years. I personally own a DW I wear daily with minimal care still doing well after 3 years.

      That's the power knowledge of markerting and branding. Let me tell you the secret.
      ITS THE BRAND!
      BUILD UP THE BRAND NAME STRONG FIRST, THEN QUALITY.(THIS IS THE TRICK). WHEN YOU'RE FAMOUS, YOU CAN SELL THE ICE TO THE ESKIMOS RIGHT.
      In a split second, when youre already got the name, then the REAL DEAL STARTS HERE , change towards better quality specs, somewhat even better than the competitors VALUE. THAT'S VALUE CREATIONS,or normal people would say
      " You pay for what you get".
      Later on, people will start to forget about all the trashy and ripoff stuff during initial stage of this brand.
      Even if you buy the the 'quartz movement in a bulk' even for 10usd per 15kg? CAN YOU sell them back like Daniel Wellington does?
      It's a fashion watch , so why putting so much cost on 'creating' one. At least it all medical grade stainless steel and SWAROVSKI, not alloy cheap materials with fake crystals unless it's fake DW.
      " IS NOT HOW YOU MAKE, BUT HOW YOU SELL." Well I'm referring to the fashion here, not a real watch making company. If real watch making company, yes you're gonna make it from the heart.
      NOW IS ALL ABOUT DIGITALISATION WORLD. If you do the same old marketing trick like 20 30 years ago ONLY for this market segment and price range, then you can closed your shop.

    I think it’s funny that you can find something eerily similar at a drugstore for $15. But you wouldn’t want to be seen buying a cheap watch at a drugstore. So you buy a Daniel Wellington for $200 in a jewellery because you’re clueless.

  • @kennyduarte783
    @kennyduarte783 Před 5 lety +43

    I bought a Timex Fairfield as a “sure, why not?” impulse buy. It’s not a Seiko or a Hamilton by any means but it is much, much higher quality then it’s humble price tag. It just feels well built and substantial. Surprisingly heavy but I like that. For less then $30. Plus the indiglo really works well. Honestly I’m glad I bought it.
    Also another point that is absolutely true, proper horological brands like Seiko are blowing it as far as marketing goes. They really ought to learn from DW and MVMT. Plus they have an obvious advantage: a much more superior product at a similar if not lower price point; like the Seiko SNK807, for less then a $100, it’s automatic, has a day/date complication, a display back, decent lume and isn’t monstrously huge. Really, much the same could be said about any Seiko 5. Plus it’ll run for decades, the DW won’t even last 5 and I’m being generous.

      You can’t ever go wrong with a Casio. The watches are inexpensive enough to be collectible, but are built well enough to be worth taking care of. They don’t try to position themselves as something they’re not, and they were at the forefront of the quartz revolution of the 70s and into the 80s.

    4 years ago, I got a legitimate DW Classic Sheffield watch from a reputable dept. store and other than changing the battery once, it still works like new till this day. No visible scratches whatsoever. Yes, I can get counterfeit DW watches online which are 10x cheaper, but if anything goes wrong with them, there'd be no warranty. I know DW watches aren't the best quality, but I like how it looks and no other watches from other brands look *EXACTLY* like it. Many look similar but none has the exact same slimness the DW watch has. See, my work requires me to wear long sleeved business shirts, hence my sleeves looks uneven if I wear other thicker watches. I wear my DW watch on the daily to the office on the weekdays and if I head out on the weekends, I switch it up to something more expensive looking like the Orient or the Seiko.

    I bought the 36mm variant in 2016 or so, because of the slimness and the style; but it was pure accident thst I chose this brand, as I had originally planned to buy a Skagen but the dealer didn't had those available and patience is not my strongest virtue. Except for the strap that I had to replace after about a year or two, so far I had no problems with the quality. Before the DW, I had a Junkers automatic that was twice as expensive and utterly disappointing for me. The slim and reliable (sic!) DW has bern doing a better job since; but probably a lot of cheaper options would have as well.

    Ben, I have found the DW, VINCERO & MVMT ultimate Assasin, THE KILLER that will come in at around 150 USD in Auto, with a Seagul Movement, hand assembed, it is a dress watch. I will see if they will send you one, as this proves everything you have been saying, even the packaging walks all over these other brands.

    I think Timex just released a solar powered explorer watch for like 40 bucks, supposedly recharges from any light. I'd prefer that over DW watches for sure.

      Fidel Cashflow the Explorer Gallatin. I bought one but honestly I’m disappointed with it. It looks cool in pictures but it’s very cheap feeling in person and the case is plastic that feels cheap, I’ve also seen pictures of lugs being completely broken off. I don’t recommend it.

    The problem I see here, is that youtubers and reviewers keep reviewing this brand over and over again, which gives them more bigger audience reach. Why not just stop doing it and forget it even exists. This brand is in range of the ben10, pokemon, happy meals watches.
    This is a mass produced ~5-10usd, and they sell for ~250usd. I do not own a DW, but appreciate the work the John Filip has done since 2011.

    quick google search will tell you everything you need to know about DW watches. I almost bought a Hugo Boss if my friend didn't stop me. and people buy fashion watches all for the same reason, not for the look, you can match it with Frederique Constant or anything else, but to have one more brand name somewhere hanging.

    • @kadajawi6567
      @kadajawi6567 Před 5 lety

      But Frederique Constant costs quite a bit more, and they like to be inspired by other, greater brands IMHO. Also, their quartz watches are a bit of daylight robbery in terms of what you're getting (as in... qwartz).

  • @sergeis6902
    @sergeis6902 Před 5 lety +3

    It is a nice review and it is hard to disagree to it. Yet what is missing here what all those fashion brands are targeting mainly women's watch market. And if for gents watches there are so many much better alternatives and normal person even don't look at those ridiculous products, for ladies situation and criteria are different. Personally I don't like DW, MVT , etc but there is a clear lack for entry level modern style ladies watches. This allows such pseudo brands to thrive. Maybe Swatch doing good job here but not in classic style. And to say honestly if I look to the entry product lineup of other respectable brands for ladies I.e. Seiko and Tissot etc. it is rather poor, stylistically outdated and not sufficient. Such very nice brands with history as Casio and Timex are somehow considered as too cheap to wear as fashion/bijoux accessory ( clear marketing mistakes). So situation in this market is more complex creating opportunities for DW and similar.

    • @mymidgetbae184
      @mymidgetbae184 Před 5 lety

      Agree. Some women are more particular with a watch's fashion factor more than other components that make a great watch. DW thrives on that criteria.

    Get the Rodina Bauhaus for an quality watch with a Sapphire chrystal and a great automatic Seagull movement. Cut past the quartz battery DW now!
    Or get a DD. Danish Design brand watch if you like buying batteries

    • @kadajawi6567
      @kadajawi6567 Před 5 lety

      The Rodina is a blatant Nomos Tangente and Stowa Antea KS rip-off though. And I don't think the dial works nearly as well as either because of that branding/font choice. However yes, it's terrific value for money of course, as both the Nomos and Stowa are significantly more (though they are better made and feature much better (and of course decorated) movements). As for fashion brands, yes, Danish Design, Jacob Jensen, there are some decent ones. Although I would try to find a watch with universally interchangeable straps. The one on my Jacob Jensen is in terrible shape, but getting a replacement one isn't really worth it considering the not exactly great quality of these.

    I don't know, i like my fossil BQ2209. Yeah, it might be a mainstream watch from a mainstream brand, but heck, i paid it about 60 euros, and it has a rather cool design (and a totally cool, albeit useless, auto seconds hand).
    But then again, i'm more of a skeletonized auto guy (tho my wallet isn't :V), this kind of design doesn't appeal too much to me, but spending these amounts of money for similar brands is just nuts. Especially considering that the same watches can be found on aliexpress and similar places for a fraction of the cost. But eh, i guess that branding has go to be paid somehow.
