  • Hii !! I wanted to share with you the vocal range of JD Sumner. I tried to select some unknown clips of him singing low and high. By listening to albums on youtube, I found rare recordings that I used in this video. I wanted to make this video to make people discover the real talent of JD, that he's not only extremely low but also he could sing high and because nobody's okay with which note is his lowest and highest. I noticed that in the old recordings he sometimes used falsetto at the end of songs so it's usually there that I found high notes. It's not impossible that I made mistakes on the notes he hit so please excuse me if it happens. It is hard especially with the low ones because it's difficult to find the exact note and with the high notes I now recognize his tone in his upper register as it is generally pretty weak and recognizable compared to others.

    Little corrections :
    Lowest note : D-2 fry note at 9:03

    Lowest chest note : seems to be a G0 at 7:53

    Highest chest note : F4 at 4:10
    czcams.com/video/dvht5EbR7dg/video.html
    Highest falsetto note : D5 at 15:30

      czcams.com/video/Eibu91j5uE8/video.html Here's a clip where I think could be useful in terms of finding a low note, at 2:48. Unfortunately, the audio was cut out towards the end of the slide.

      Thanks a lot! The note is between F1 and F#1 and he seems to hold it. Most of the time JD slides to an F1 or E1, but in some rare recordings he has gone lower than that. czcams.com/video/Qx0dgqDPino/video.html, in this recording I recently discovered, at 6:19, he slides to a very low chest note between A0 and B0 then he slides up to an E1. It's hard to determine the exact note, but it's a good recording for the lowest chest notes he reached in his life.

      @@JDSumnerStuff I am curious as to what his lowest note would've been in the 90's, as his voice as dropped a bit since these Elvis concerts. Like Tim Storms, JD as stated that he's never really gone through a voice changing phase and it's just deepened as he got older.

      @@antoniodonacardozo6984 Yeah, but even in his younger days He was singing very low chest notes in the 1st octave relatively easy. As He got older, you could always hear Him breathing in a lot as well, and He lost the tone He once had.

    Where most other bass singers try to artificially shape their voices when going low and maintain as much resonance as possible, jd is literally the only one to sing in a neutral position, he doesn't resonate too much and if anything can sound breathy and soft because he's simply just got a low voice and doesn't need to strain. He had such a haunting and amazing tone to his voice, it's wisdom and peace captured in audio form.

      @@SouthPawBowler24, his G0 is chest-fry. Run a note through a spectrum analyzer and it will tell the full story. JD was, however, still in full chest voice at C1, which I know of only one person lower and that's the great Oktavist Mikhail Zlatopolsky, who's chest range extended down to Bb0.

    I witnessed JD Sumner & the Stamps live in July 1965, and he sang much lower than F1, as it seems you admit. In the solo "Jesus Will Be There" he hit a solid D1, and in another instance he swaggered down to a G0, which is 2 notes lower than the piano.

  • @thebassmanadam
    @thebassmanadam Před 6 měsíci +1

    This is a really good compilation and even some notes I had never heard before. I want to clarify that JD Sumner did not need or use fry. His speaking voice alone was lower than most of these clips. Anyone who can nail a B0 and act like he could go another octave doesn't need fry. His notes were too well sustained and no flip to fry can be heard. Some people like JD and Tim Storms just have a very rare abnormality that allows them to hit natural lows no one else can. I am sure that JD much like Tim had a vocal cord and vocal fold abnormality that allowed
    such extremes.
