    "Yumeko never loses" She lost to Yuriko in the third episode. "She can get out of any situation because she's rich" There are people at the academy who are way richer than her. She ran out of money to bet against Kaede, had to ask Itsuki to lend her more, then Itsuki ran out of money to bet, too. Kaede had more money than the two of them so Itsuki had to literally bet her life in order to match him. "Being a housepet isn't so bad, they will just get bullied a little and have to marry some rich guy" Housepets are literally slaves. Life plans are slavery. They have their entire lives planned out for them in a way that will ultimately benefit the council, and if they can't pay their debts before they graduate, they permanently lose all control over their own lives. What good is "being rich" if you have no freedom? "There are no real stakes because Yumeko doesn't even care what happens to her" But Mary and Itsuki care, as do other characters. Yumeko may be the main protagonist but the focus isn't really what happens to her, it's how her actions affect everyone else. Mary and Itsuki are both proud, ambitious people who, unlike Yumeko, have goals and care about their own status and how much money they have. Both of them also end up being Yumeko's allies so her losing would be bad for them. Mary teamed up with Yumeko to win the two card indian poker game and get rid of her housepet status. Itsuki relies on Yumeko overthrowing Kirari and putting Itsuki back on the council. Yumeko doesn't have much to lose but her friends do. "Yumeko can't lose games in which the loser dies because she is the main character" Kaiji can't either, for the same reason, yet you don't seem to have a problem with that. "Half of the characters in Kaiji were killed off" Ah, yes, all those important characters who we'd known for two entire episodes. They were so important that we even got to know the names of two or three of those guys. And then they died. Much sad. "There is no real gore or characters getting hurt in Kakegurui" Itsuki ripped out her nails and Midari lost her eye. Sure, it doesn't matter much in the long term, but neither does Kaiji losing his ear and fingers and having them reattached by the beginning of the second season. His cool badass scars don't impact the plot any more than Itsuki's bandages or Midari's eyepatch impact the plot of Kakegurui.
    You seem like one of those people who compare everything they watch to their favourite show and complain when it does something different. It's like you want Kakegurui to be Kaiji just because they are both about gambling even though, aside from that similarity, the story and themes have nothing in common.

  • @rcdakara
    @rcdakara Před 2 lety +555

    When watching something like Kaiji, the question is “WILL he win?” With Kakegurui, it’s “HOW will she win.” I think that’s why Kakegurui can get away with the stakes seeming pointless to Yumeko. They’re both gambling shows, but the reason they’re enjoyable is different.

    kakegurui wasn’t about winning, it was about how we win. “yumeko never cared about winning”, yes, that is the entire point. she is literally insane and doesn’t have any remorse for driving others insane with her to forward her gambling addiction. we know she’ll win in the end, but that’s not why it’s entertaining. she has no remorse, no mercy, and thats why she continuously takes crazy risks every time with no real fear in what will happen, and it’s entertaining because she’s not scared at all, and it drives other characters just as crazy as she already is. she’s intelligent beyond anyone in the series expectations and that’s why it’s exciting to see how she’ll win.

    The comparison to Sherlock is spot on. There's nothing wrong with liking Kakegurui or Sherlock, but they're terrible examples of the genre's people purport them to be. For Kakegurui, gambling isn't the real focus and is just the avenue for the anime to show off cute anime girls and high-school drama, just like Sherlock uses detective work as an avenue for... Benedict Cumberbatch being cool/an asshole. Another example is House MD, which I personally enjoy, but I'm not gonna pretend the show's focus is the medicine when House is never wrong, the stakes are always pretty low, and he always manages to find a solution in some convoluted way that, 99% of the time, the viewer had no way of knowing.

    Having seen NGNL, Kaiji, and i'm up to date in both the Kakegurui manga and anime. I completely disagree. Kakegurui isn't trying to be Kaiji. It's taking the gambling anime formula and turning it on it's head. There is no underpowered protagonist with extremely high stakes working to pay off his debt and live a good life. It's about filthy rich people with huge egos being crushed and ruined. It's about characters that are bat shit insane who cheat to make their living, and fall due to their arrogance. Slowly Yumeko doesn’t become the main character of the story anymore, Kakegurui takes careful care in developing the intentions of each person that gambles against Yumeko. Instead of solely focusing on the risks they take i suggest viewing how each character’s personality changes after a gamble.

I end up getting more sucked in to Ryota who can’t gamble at all, the only reason he and Itsuki are still ‘alive’ is because of her, and they all are very invested because of themselves. I thought Yumeko was the least interesting character. Itsuki was defeated and taught a lesson, before coming back to risk her entire life on Yumeko, and Ryota was still alive because of Yumeko donating to him, and because of this, Ryota will do anything to help. Mary was interesting with her relationship with the plot, at first I thought she was just gonna be generic first episode villain but she evolved into an ally, kinda like kakyoin.

    I suspect Kakegurui is trying to be more about addiction then gambling. If you look at many of the characters they have an addiction to something or other, and gambling is the means of feeding that addiction. Itsuki Sumeragi likes to collect peoples figernails, Jabami Yumeko is addicted to gambling it's self, Midari Ikishima is either an adrenaline junkie or a masochist. The opening of Kakegurui has and over arcing theme of food, and of feeding. This is culminates with a scene of the student counsel seated and a banquet table preparing to feast, while Ryouta is actually on the table with rest of the food. To me this symbolizes the affluent members of the school feeding their addictions and comsuming the less affluent students in the process. Also in the manga there appears to be another faction called the "Hundred Devouring Families" another reference to feeding and consuming. I may be reading to much into this and just trying to rationalize my own theory, and I fully accept the possibility of being wrong. In conclusion you might be correct that Kakegurui is not a good gambling anime but then again maybe it never was trying to be.

      @GamerX998 Před 6 lety +26

      people should learn that just because you like something, it doesn't make it perfect, like, dude, i love guilty crown among the many, and i'm not dreaming in hell to say that it doesn't have a good amount of problems, yet it seems that these people in the comment section can't even fathom that concept and get angry as fuck if someone says X anime has one particularly bad trait, as if the entire anime depended on that one trait.
      well i'll tell you now, if an anime is good only for one big trait, then when you remove that, doesn't the anime become shit?

      Definitely agree. The whole gambling schtick is just something to set the atmosphere. Both Yumeko and Kirari (student council prez) have "bami" in their last names, and the kanji for that translates to "eater". The manga definitely focuses on the central themes of power and becoming completely lost in your addiction, regardless of the results. It's not supposed to be focused on gambling.

    • @BusterKingSyros
      @BusterKingSyros Před 6 lety +17

      It all depends how integral the tool is to supporting the plot, in Kakegurui you could replace the gambling with say debates and the show would remain largely the same, in that regard I don't think that gambling is an integral part of Kakegurui. Like I said in my original post, Kakegurui isn't really about gambling it's about the characters, who just happen to gamble.

      None. No show is perfect, and I don't believe there will ever be a perfect show. Perfection is to be striven for but never attained.
      "now tell me, why does EVERYONE in this comment section(except those who write under the comments of those who write first it seems) think he called kakegurui a bad anime when he litterally dissed only one aspect of it, and praised pretty much everything else? I can only speak for myself and I did nothing of the sort. I simply tired to point out that Mother's Basement, hereto referred to as MB, may have been judging Kakegurui on improper standards. In the same way that an apple is a terrible orange, Kakegurui is a terrible gambling anime. Apples are not oranges and Kakegurui is not a gambling anime. Do not confuse plot for theme. The themes of Kakegurui is addiction and excess, the plot is that wealthy students attend a school where they gamble.
      "people should learn that just because you like something, it doesn't

      This largely seems to be a diatribe against other commenters and does not seem to apply to me, did my original comment seem angry to you? I can not speak for other people so you will have to ask them to get answers to your questions. The purpose of my original post was to point out to MB that Kakegurui is not a gambling anime, and that judging it as such might be unfair. Gambling isn't even a genre really, gambling is a plot device. Even Kaiji isn't a gambling anime, it's about survival and what the main character is willing to endure to survive, gambling is just a plot device the writer uses to challenge the protagonist. Kaiji could be about duels and be largely unchanged.

    There are interesting stakes in Kakegurui, however, I think you're making that assessment from the wrong perspective. The stakes aren't from Yumeko's perspective, but rather everyone else depending on her.
    Yumeko may not care about her stakes very much, but Ryouta, who is hanging onto her coattails does.
    Itsuki, who's very dignity, livelihood, family name, and the like is at stake if Yumeko fails.
    Mary, who's pride and sense of self relies on Yumeko being successful.
    We care if Yumeko wins, A, because she's more morally superior than the rest of the cast that she's facing, and B, because of everyone around riding on her winning or losing. Yumeko doesn't care if she wins or not, but that's okay, because her good friends with life or death stakes really do care.
    The anime and the manga aren't even about Yumeko, so much as the people she effects.

You never get to indulge in the type of emotions she claims to love gambling for brining her because she’s never put in a position that convinces the viewer that losing is a possible and has consequences.
      There’s just no real back and forth with yumeko and the other characters at least in yugioh the main characters pretend to be afraid of losing. Even with the exploration of other characters yumeko never really feels like she earned the win. Kaiji is just a better way to tell a gambling story

      There's a Mary Sue OC that they put in just for the anime.

    • @tudornaconecinii3609
      @tudornaconecinii3609 Před 5 lety +53

      Of course you can write characters smarter than yourself. What you can't do is make them *much* smarter.
      But at the end of the day, someone 10-15 IQ points higher than you isn't randomly fathoming the unfathomable in ways you could never envision. They're just better and sharper at thinking on their feet and figuring stuff out in contexts where you could've done just as well if only you had more time.
      And time is exactly what you have as a writer. What your character needs to resolve in a scene worth of 30 virtual minutes, you have a week or two to plan out. That's like googling the entire field of science you need in the middle of an exam, or freezing time in a rap battle to deconstruct your opponent's bars and go through his entire history three times before coming up with your own punchline.
      This is the entire reason why top athletes for mental sports (strategy esports, chess, poker etc) are coachable. Not because the coaches have something of value for the athlete by being smarter than the athlete, but because they have something of value for the athlete by putting in the arduous hours of vod reviews, probability analysis and stat breakdowns. Same with a writer's plot brainstorming and how realistic his smart protagonist seems.

      He raises good points tbh but I never felt like Kakegurui was meant to be a True Gambling Anime™️ It always felt like a thrilling/suspenseful character driven story. It follows a few characters, one of which is a super rich gambling addict, and takes place in a high school for the elite. But I feel like maybe that’s the point of it, to just follow a character who’s addicted to gambling regardless of what it’ll do to them.

    Guys, literally 1:21 into the video he explains that the show is good.
    The point here is that it doesn't know how to take the most out of gambling. It doesn't try to deeply explore the games and it never convinces you that the protag can be deeply ruined by the gambling, not because of the stakes, but because all the times the protag does lose, it's all fine chapters later or right at the end of the game, you know she's going to be fine. Nearly the whole first season of Kaiji is just suffering and struggle, the author shows you he's not afraid of ruining Kaiji's life for good, especially during an important plot point, and you can feel the struggle during the game through all the exploits and mind games that happen over multiple episodes, he squeezes every game.

And it's literally one of the most unique, psychologically brilliant tv shows on the planet.

    Kaiji has threatening situations that can go either way, despite it having more episodes. Almost every gambles conditions of winning and losing doesn't incorporate the possibility of death....meaning that the loss isn't a loss of life...just a loss of something else. He can get bodily harm, debt, etc. Which you feel in the immersion. Cause when he goes through the wringer, YOU feel it too. (Espescially with the amazing animatiom that sets the feeling of pain and fear very real, and anxious provoking) Which allows the story to keep going with high stakes. That's why it keeps you guessing. Cause except for one time, other gambles can actually fuck him over while he still lives and he can win or lose depending on what he figures out ... hell he loses sometimes more often than he wins. And while Kaiji loses and fails a lot, there ARE times where he wins. The story can go either way and it's so unpredictable. That's what makes a good gambling anime- stakes that feel real. Not once in Kakegurui, have I felt a threat. Everything will always be alright. But hey, two different kinds of stories, but "same genres". But I come to Kaiji for anxiety- and Kakegurui for eye candy. In the end, they are both great anime. Let's not attack either of them, outta spite. Both are gone to for different reasons. I prefer the fear within gambling and the anxiety that comes from the unknown. Rather than the eye candy of characters and scenes.

      I like how kakegurui isn’t really about life threats though and that’s a good thing. It’s a cliche to have situations like that anyways because action stories already do those such things. It doesn’t always have to come to the conclusion of literally killing each other for a goal. I’ve not seen Kaiji before, but I can say that the gambling in Kakegurui is very real. You can say that Yumeko is the “definition” of gambling because in the anime every time she gambles she keeps betting more and more and more; just like how a gambler would do.
      Judging from the video and comments, it sounds like Kaiji has a lot of violence. IF you were to compare them, it would seem like Kakegurui is from a psyche perspective of gambling. You can see how crazy every character acts as they gamble their life away the more the gamble as well.

      I mean it’s a nice Anime but the main thing appealing to the viewer is probably the artwork. The story is ok, pretty average manga story but what makes it different to other Animes of its kind (there are lots of it with the same theme but almost every of them in a style I don’t like) is the more detailed more vividly feeling world. You can dive into the world while watching cause it actually feels like a game and not like an anime, with the only difference that you’re basically watching a stream with lets call it „interesting conditions“
      Other Animes don’t give you the feeling of a world which could actually be interactive cause it looks way too much like an anime.
      And by that SAO seems like a good anime although it’s storyline is pretty averaging. I also really enjoyed watching SAO ngl, but the thought put into SAO is definitely not on the same level like Kakegurui (which also got a pretty straight story line but there are more thoughts to it).

    Ok, first of all I can't remember any series evoking a dopamine hole after finishing the available episodes as big as Kakegurui did.
    Those were legit signs of withdrawal I experienced for some days and this indicates that the show did something right, almost 'too right'.
    It's the kind of series that is appealing in a rather unconventional way which is why I think that you shouldn't shove it inside of a fixed genre, in this case 'gambling anime'. It's kind of comparable to one punch man, but in a slightly more complex way. Knowing that Yumeko is never really in trouble or scared just feels good. You have this completely overpowered character, which might take away tension, but it adds a new entertaining element.
    The main focus during the gambling scenes isn't on whether Yumeko will win or lose, it's rather on how she'll figure out how to win, which is the reason why the gambling scenes aren't boring.
    Kakegurui's entertaining value isn't built around the gambling scenes, but around the absolutely twisted feel-good atmosphere it creates. And it does that coherently and perfectly which is why this is such a piece of art. The beautiful drawing style ranging from really pretty and cute to borderline horrifying, the fair share or characters who are no less than batshit insane, the fact that there's not really 'good and evil' or a real antagonist, because Kirari and Yumeko are both straight up psychopaths and harmonize so well with each other and the brilliant depiction of those psychopathic tendencies; this is what makes Kakegurui one of the best series I've ever had the privilege to watch and I absolutely can't wait for season 3.

    It’s true that Yumeko gets off on the thrill and that she’s certainly not invincible and that the stakes are high. But even when her life isn’t at stake I wasn’t particularly worried. In the episode where she’d lose all her fingernails if she lost (which while certainly horrible it’s not life threatening) I still wasn’t worried because while I could maybe see that happening to a minor character, I don’t see it happening to her. That’s just not the kind of show she’s in.

  • @Prodmullefc
    @Prodmullefc Před rokem +3

    That was a good point about the high stakes taking away the pressure of the game tbh. If the MC is betting the lives of every innocent person on earth in the first episode, you already know that he's gonna win because otherwise there would be no more show. Unless the character loses and then has to somehow save the world from the initial loss or something. In any case, from a narrative perspective, having the stakes too big is a surefire way to immediately suck the sense of those stakes dry.

    I’ve just finished this anime and I absolutely loved it. I think the comparisons to Kaiji are unjust for one simple reason: This isn’t a gambling anime. This is a character study. The journey matters more than the destination.
    The gambling serves as a launch pad to reveal the twisted depths of the human psyche and how far certain characters are willing to go to achieve their goals, whether that be pleasure derived solely through the act of gambling as seen in characters such as Yumeko, Midari and Kirari, or amassing great wealth and power as shown through Manyuda and Itsuki etc.
    I can understand disappointment if you watch this solely for the result but I think it’s obvious from the first episode with Yumeko baiting Mary that this is about the moment to moment character developments and tension that both parties face.

    first of all, don’t compare both anime, each has there own attractions. second, yumeko doesn’t gamble for money but only wanted to gamble with much more high stakes such as there own lives since she gets turned on with risks and as the anime/mangga mentioned she is a gambling addict. yes, it is predictable that yumeko always win but it is really interesting to find out how. no hate, just my opinion with your own opinion. anyway, i love both the anime.

      first of all, if they're gambling anime and even MAL relates them to one another, I'm pretty sure they're comparable. second of all, there is nothing interesting about a character who gambles away sums you and I could ever dream of for the thrill of it. there's nothing relatable and its like weebified wallstreetbets. Kaiji at least makes you feel like you could imagine yourself in his shoes. He isn't super smart and he rarely gets out because of pure intelligence, he occasionally just is lucky, which is the second name of gambling. Luck and gambling are two words that go hand in hand, which from what I've seen, Kakegurui just throws out the window.
      Less interesting, honestly a typical seasonal anime. I'm not even an elitist but I really do think it's like any seasonal show.

      @@ETHEREAL_MONARCH I don't think the point of Kakegurui is about gambling though. Yumeko has lost a number of times and occasionally became a housepet. If you've read the manga, It's not honestly just about gambling anymore and actually follows an interesting plot. Sure, Kakegurui includes gambling in it but gambling isn't just the main focus here. Kakegurui has it's own story to tell too, It's not just about a girl being turned on by the risk of losing her own life. Kakegurui’s story is not just about Yumeko’s gambling addiction; Nor has the show ever focused on just gambling in the first place.

      But that's just the same with kaiji. He always had to figure out their opponent's cheating system, or that match with the guy playing with his own modified dice didn't count? Even kaiji tried to cheat against the old man and failed. And the entire arc of that machine slot on the second season. That machine was arranged and kaiji had to find its own way to hack it. Both, kakegurui and kaiji use cheating for almost everything.

      Cheating aside, Kaiji and Akagi always had something on the line, and they have lost a lot before. Kakegurui supposedly has something on the line, but the main girl is never concerned with losing and when she does lose nothing bad happens. There are no stakes cause you know the outcome. Kaiji actually loses an ear, so you know that the stakes are high.
