  • Having been born and raised near the ocean...sometimes I miss it and feel the need to go back. Most of my travels take me through the mountains and the southwestern desert....but sometimes I miss the smell of that salty air and hearing the sounds of the waves crashing. Come along as I visit the coast of Central California including San Simeon, Big Sur and even Solvang.

Oh Catherine, how could I have missed this episode. I was also born and raised on the Pacific coast and for 35 years roamed, played, surfed all the places you visited. At age 74 the BEAUTIFUL, rugged Pacific and the stretch you travelled will always be in my heart and home to me. The sounds, smells, sunrises and sunsets. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Great video Catherine. The wildlife was a nice touch. Especially seeing Zebras in California. We also loved seeing Sierra, the dog. Stay well and keep the surprises coming. 💖

When my grandfather died in 1950 in Oklahoma, my dad, at 13 years old, was finishing up wheat harvest in the Midwest . He came out on a train to live with his brother who was a ranch hand in the Santa Ynez valley area. He told me he thought he came to paradise. My uncle is buried in the Lompoc area.

Good morning Catherine! I am so happy to see you at the beach. Lake Cachuma is where I learned to fish as a kid and all of your other stops are regular stops for me! You are in my "back yard". From Big Sur, south to Santa Barbara, is an amazing stretch of our beautiful California Coast. I got married in Santa Barbara on the cliffs overlooking the ocean! Thank you for your wonderful video of zebras and all the marine life at the rookery. I was just there in late September. Always look forward to Sunday mornings with you and sometimes your friends! Thank you and as always, love you and be safe. 💖🙏

Thanks again Catherine. I have been to all of the places on this video and always enjoy seeing them. The hike up the slot canyon is fun and easy to do. I did the hike on crutches back in 2003. I would suggest carrying bear spray when hiking in the park as there have been mountain lions spotted there. Another thing ia to keep your kids and pets close to you. Kids running around playing and screaming are big cat magnets

I agree :) I have appreciation for both. The most amazing mountains that meet the sea that I have ever seen is the Napali Coast on Kauai, Hawaii. Absolutely stunning! They have been filmed in the opening sequence of the Fantasy Island tv show. Another stunning mountain range is in British Columbia, Canada. Banff area and the turquoise Lake Louise set against Mt Victoria is heavenly beauty. Plus there is a very panoramic and scenic hike from Lake Louise up to a tea house nearby Mt. Victoria. Plus there is another smaller lake at a higher elevation on the hike back.

I appreciated your coastal CA adventure. I spent a few months in Solvang when I was a child in the 50's, so it was nice to see what it looks like now. I used to catch small frogs (and let them go!) in a long-gone small storm drainage area that ran near the edge of the downtown area. I visit CA about every 3 years and so enjoy the coast and the sea views. You caught a nice sunset view. Your presentation made me long to be at the coast. Maybe this fall I'll be able to go. Also, it was nice to hear about the places to camp in the area. Keep up the great work Catherine.

Yes, the mountains touch the sea, the ribs in Cambria, fresh fish in Ventura, the panoramic coastal views, old and new bridges, flora and many kinds of birds, waves crashing white contrast to the dark rocks and beaches, and rolling oak-spotted hills.... really float my boat :> . Glad you were able to share my backyard with your subscribers. Thank you for your presentation. Stay Well and Enjoy. Hugs and Smiles

Where the land meets the sea is beautiful. The high mountains are beautiful. The deep forests are beautiful. The scorching deserts are beautiful. Morro Rock is home to a nesting pair of Peregrine Falcons. Patience is required but one of the pair can often be seen from the observation bench on the seaside of the Rock. Binoculars or a spotting scope will be helpful. If one is very lucky, you might see prey being captured or the young on the nest if you are visiting during breeding season. You can tell the bird’s favorite perches on the Rock by looking for the telltale “whitewash”.
Morro Bay Area in general is a special place for Birders!

We are from South Florida & the beach & ocean brings us peace. I (Lou) lives in Berkeley & visited Carmel, Monterey & Sausalito. The California coast is heaven on earth.
    So happy for you.

Well, you were just in my back yard, Catherine! I haven’t been to Nojoqui Falls in years, and yes, it is quite nice when there’s lots of water. I love love love Cambria, San Simeon and Ragged Point, and one of my favorite stops is the elephant seal rookery. The females will be having babies soon!

Morro Bay has no shortage of good restaurants. My favorite place for breakfast is Carla’s. Great food and decent prices. Dedicated carnivores who don’t mind a bit of a drive, will appreciate Jocko’s in the little town of Nipomo. Be prepared for a wait for a table during the dinner rush hour. It’s worth the wait. It’s not fancy but the food is great!

Love how you can hear the waves crashing from the last campsite. Must have been wonderful to sleep to that sound.

If you love the mountains and nature in general, it is highly likely you love the sea as well! I miss the smell of the salt spray from waves crashing on California's coastal rocks immensely! Thank you for sharing another lovely adventure in your cozy home on wheels. If you ever get up to my latitude, I highly recommend Westport Union Landing State Park. But as you pointed out, such places are getting increasingly pricey. Keep adventurous!

OH Catherine, that really made me miss the ocean. I lived there on the central coast in the 80’s then raised my family in Oceanside. I know exactly what you mean when you say the ocean is part of you. I know I’m where I’m suppose to be now in this season of my life, (in the desert) which I do love but th ocean is often missed. Thanks so much for sharing.

Sometimes we just need to go home again and recharge Cat. You seemed very content to be back in SoCal and just tour around familiar places. Solvang looks like a wonderful and charming place, take care and looking forward to your next adventure.
