The rules requiring a mailing on the first day of postal-service following the FIRST observation are tricky, in my mind. If you were to have seen the comet on a Saturday night in a jurisdiction without postal-service on Sunday, that's all well and good, because you can observe the suspected object on Sunday night as well, stay up late to write your letter of TWO observations for the Monday mail. (Two observations is essential for deeming the object to be a comment, for it must have moved between the two observations. Unless you happened to see it in two locations on the same night. I don't know if that is possible for some comets, and is more likely to be noticed on a longer winter-time period of darkness if observed at the very beginning of darkness and again at the very end, but requiring you to stay up into the dawn to write and post the letter). But if you've seen the comet on a Thursday night where the post-office runs on Friday, then you must write your letter before you've made TWO observations, and I suspect a great many people would have lost out on the Medal by taking it for granted that you can't report a comet without seeing it move a bit on a later night.

7:33 - To our eyes it is strange to date a letter "10 mo. 3d, 1847". I routinely use dates of the form "2024_06Jun_01stSat" so that no matter what software is sorting that date alphanumerically the dates will always be in chronological order. But what could be the motive in this case? (I note also that an uppercase "I" is used for "1" Did the case for typesetting not have both a "1" and an "I" even though it had the different sizes of typeface to enable setting the date smaller?)

10:30 - A little-known episode in U.S. history is the Whale Express (a precursor to the much-later 1860 Pony Express), which attempted to deliver mail from Nantucket Island to the mainland by harnessing whales to pull mail loaded into sleighs whose runners had been replaced with pontoons. This is the origin of the term "Nantucket Sleigh-ride". There seems to have been but little success in the endeavor to work out how to run the reins so as to steer a whale, and there was debate about where the coachman should sit, be it on the sleigh or on the whale's back.

11:39 - It would be MY hope that here in the 21st century Mr. Mitchell's high "status", "prestige", and "legitimacy" accorded by a social network to which he was well-connected politically would be considered worthless insofar as trusting him or not, and would be more than worthless as far as trusting a person who might claim the "merit" of having chosen Mr. Mitchell to be one of her parents. In fact there are some in the 21st century who would deem a member of "the establishment" to be worthy of MORE suspicion than, say, a cobbler, or a cashier in a retail outlet, or a tender of livestock in their grazing-lands.

I have to listen rather than watch if I want to actually process and learn all the interesting things you discussed in this video. The whirlwind pace of cuts between you talking and other imagery is way too fast and distracting from what you are saying, though I feel I'm missing out on seeing the imagery when I do that, and pausing the video every 5 seconds to look more closely at the images completely disrupts the flow of what you're talking about. Maybe I'm not the intended audience, but I really hope you'd consider making videos with less jarring visuals.
