I'd never heard of Maria Mitchell before. Thanks for sharing her story!
she has such a soothing voice
Agreed
Science ASMR...
Pity about the irritating 'background music'.
As a Maria Mitchell REU Alum, I really appreciate you bringing awareness to her background, talents, and discovery. Women deserve more recognition in the advancement of astronomy and other sciences.
When I studied abroad in Nantucket we lived in the Mitchell House right across the street from the Mitchell museum. I never knew any of this.
Thanks to Tibees, we can all appreciate Maria Mitchell dedication to the stars as proven by using her telescope night after night which led to a great contribution to astronomy as well as a continued fascination of space and the objects that move within its vastness.
hi Tibees! I just want to say hi, and thank you for everything you do
Her voice, it's like being hypnotized into learning.❤
Comets may well be the most spectacular objects in the night sky, but who needs comets in the night sky when you have Tibees down here on Earth.

Exactly 💯
A very interesting sliver of history and good news for her in 1848. Btw, my own grandpa was born in 1886 so this article satisfactorily resonates within me. Thank you so much for sharing Toby.
Tibees I wish you could present 5 minute informational videos and have every student watch at the beginning of every school day and receive the vast benefit of intellect from you...this alone would raise the worlds' intellect; your voice and presentation are like a drug that leave the listener wanting more...
Whoa! Another video uploaded with in only 4 days from the previous one! Great thanks!
Time to stop what im doing and watch this amazing tibees video that DEFINITELY wont give me an exestintial crisis!!
The way u explain every topic is mind-blowing 😊
Thank you Toby.. I'm not an astronomer, but this was captivating and really interesting :)
I always loves your take on your content, Toby! You inspire.
Great to mention Marie Mitchell and her story. Thank you very much!
I will always remember viewing Halley's Comet from a commercial airline between San Francisco and Dallas.
Excellent presentation, thankyou. Not surprising the role of George Airy, a crusty old chap just look at his obstructive role in the discovery of Neptune.
I could listen to you forever
Great story and fascinating insight into a bit of science history. It's never as easy as just doing experiments and then reporting the facts, there's always politics and "society". Nice to know that in this case that Miss Mitchell had her supporters and got her recognition.
I learnt a new word, 'Diffidence' - thank you for that, also you are super cute.
So cool! That's the year my ancestors got here to Colorado. I'm putting this random fact on my family tree. Thank you!
Thank you, I enjoy your videos very much!
Excellent presentation. This is the earliest i've ever been for her videos.❤
Tibees. first thanks for the 4D golf video that was very cool. I like the wall paper behind you. and thanks for another video about the stars, history, and adversary of Maria Mitchelle. Quote. "If everything around you seem dark, Look again you may be the light" (Rumi). this is a song quote by (Gary wright-----dream weaver ) "Fly me high through the starry skies or maybe an astral plane cross the highways of fantasy help me forget todays pain, ooh dream weaver I believe you can get me through the night ooh, dream weaver I believe we can reach the morning light" it's a cool song.
Thanks for sharing this story of Maria Mitchell. I have never heard of her before.
Tibees on niin upea. Ei pelkästään älykkyytensä vuoksi, lisäksi nuo silmät
Tibees is ALWAYS GREAT!!!
That was awesome that the King was able award her the medal which was rightfully hers. Talk about going all the way to the top!
Commets aren't made of ice cream?
YT Comments are =P
comets are ice cream, asteroids are chocolate sprinkles
haven't even conquered the ocean yet
...and?
I think with billions of people on this planet we can do more than one thing at a time.
Nice to hear the happy ending to this story!
Naurr watching Tibee's video suddenly is helping with my headache wth 🗿🗿 must be her soothing voice

The rules requiring a mailing on the first day of postal-service following the FIRST observation are tricky, in my mind. If you were to have seen the comet on a Saturday night in a jurisdiction without postal-service on Sunday, that's all well and good, because you can observe the suspected object on Sunday night as well, stay up late to write your letter of TWO observations for the Monday mail. (Two observations is essential for deeming the object to be a comment, for it must have moved between the two observations. Unless you happened to see it in two locations on the same night. I don't know if that is possible for some comets, and is more likely to be noticed on a longer winter-time period of darkness if observed at the very beginning of darkness and again at the very end, but requiring you to stay up into the dawn to write and post the letter). But if you've seen the comet on a Thursday night where the post-office runs on Friday, then you must write your letter before you've made TWO observations, and I suspect a great many people would have lost out on the Medal by taking it for granted that you can't report a comet without seeing it move a bit on a later night.
Glad the story had a happy ending for Maria ☺️
I Sigh for You!! Thanks!!!

What a nice piece of history and accomplishment.

fantastic video and research on this topic, wasnt aware of it at all ... really cool ... also the fact, that she taught hereself celestial mechanics, I tried this also several times, but it never worked out 😂
I wonder why in his final reply, the king used the word "desires" and not the word "deserves"?
Hi, Toby. Thank you for the story. How about similar ones about little known female astronomers from the southern hemisphere?
I really don’t think we understand the true nature of these objects. As usual, great content Tib’s
Teeebees! Yes! love the videos ❤️ interesting topic 😁
that's cool. go Miss Mitchell!
Have you seen Klystron 621 through your telescope? Should be coming into view in the next few days in it's 621 year orbit. As this comet is vertically polorized you will have to make sure your telescope lenses are polorized acordingly to be able to see it.
Great video Toby :)
Good to see you here :) She did a great job and I learn't a lot from this video- and thats coming from somebody that might have discovered a few comets himself :)

I love these videos. Do you know, I wonder, the work of: Rudy Rucker? He writes both fiction and non-fiction. You probably would fancy his work, if you don't know it yet.

Such a lovely story of people being nice to each other in trying to award one of the first modern woman astronomers!
So in the US there was competition on who had the best German telescope. Interesting that nobody succeeded to make a better one.

We should find a comet and name it after Tibbes😄 Great content, by the way!
She needs to discover it herself if it should be named after her, but even then the name would be Hendy. But a minor planet can be named according to a suggestion by the person who discovered it.

7:33 - To our eyes it is strange to date a letter "10 mo. 3d, 1847". I routinely use dates of the form "2024_06Jun_01stSat" so that no matter what software is sorting that date alphanumerically the dates will always be in chronological order. But what could be the motive in this case? (I note also that an uppercase "I" is used for "1" Did the case for typesetting not have both a "1" and an "I" even though it had the different sizes of typeface to enable setting the date smaller?)
Awesome video :o
Tibees, did you get a chance to see Comet Haile Bopp when it flew past? When will Miss Mitchell's comet return?
10:30 - A little-known episode in U.S. history is the Whale Express (a precursor to the much-later 1860 Pony Express), which attempted to deliver mail from Nantucket Island to the mainland by harnessing whales to pull mail loaded into sleighs whose runners had been replaced with pontoons. This is the origin of the term "Nantucket Sleigh-ride". There seems to have been but little success in the endeavor to work out how to run the reins so as to steer a whale, and there was debate about where the coachman should sit, be it on the sleigh or on the whale's back.
Darn it! I'm going to keep trying to comment first!

11:39 - It would be MY hope that here in the 21st century Mr. Mitchell's high "status", "prestige", and "legitimacy" accorded by a social network to which he was well-connected politically would be considered worthless insofar as trusting him or not, and would be more than worthless as far as trusting a person who might claim the "merit" of having chosen Mr. Mitchell to be one of her parents. In fact there are some in the 21st century who would deem a member of "the establishment" to be worthy of MORE suspicion than, say, a cobbler, or a cashier in a retail outlet, or a tender of livestock in their grazing-lands.

I have to listen rather than watch if I want to actually process and learn all the interesting things you discussed in this video. The whirlwind pace of cuts between you talking and other imagery is way too fast and distracting from what you are saying, though I feel I'm missing out on seeing the imagery when I do that, and pausing the video every 5 seconds to look more closely at the images completely disrupts the flow of what you're talking about. Maybe I'm not the intended audience, but I really hope you'd consider making videos with less jarring visuals.

Yall really should improve on naming the comets. Youre not robots. But i swear sometimes you scientists appear non human due to your coldness. Put life into your work, give it artistic names that inspire beauty, instead of cold, dead, boring, ugly and uninteresting numbers.
The pursuit of finding rewards on an ongoing basis is an objective that would require commitment in light of pious distractions ?!
Didn't ford make a Comet?
