I am a Tamilian settled in Mumbai and besides Ganesh Chaturthi, I make this often for Sankashti or Sankatahara Chaturthi. The procedure is more or less the same but for minor variations like khus-khus which we don't add. Admire the enterprising husband-wife cooking.

This is the same as koyikatta which we make in Kerala. We add jeera crushed to the Shakkar mix and the cover with dough. Some people cover with
Cinnamon leaf. Great aroma comes from mix of cinnamon, jeera and cardamom. One of my favorite snack during festivals

Ukdiche modak is always my favourite...
Modak is made in South India also usually Ganesh Chaturti. With little variations. Instead if rice atta maida, steaming or deep fried. Modak also in another shape is called karajikai in Kannada.

It is our south indian dish also we make both khara and meet modak I karnataka
For khara modak we put soaked and ground urad dal .hing .green chilli .ginger and coconut gratings

Usually we make both meta and khara with coconut chutney
