- This is a very rare early live clip of Aretha doing her hit song "Do Right Woman" from November of 1967 in beautiful color. Merv Griffin had over 5000 guests appear on his show from 1963-1986. Footage from the Merv Griffin Show is available for licensing to all forms of media through Reelin' In The Years Productions. www.reelinintheyears.com.

The singer in the middle is Aretha Franklin's baby sister Carolyn Franklin who wrote some of her hits like ain't no way for example.
And to the right of her is Erma Franklin . Those ladies were some SINGERS!
And the other lady is their cousin Brenda
@@reggiemitchell5198 I don't think so, cousin Brenda wasn't singing with Aretha quite yet
I don’t think that is Erma Franklin to the right of Carolyn either.
Êærma the other sister too is there
Come on background singers!!! 😄 I love how real singers can BLOW like this effortlessly. No theatrics, no help, just singing. One of the greats.
Lmfaoo yasssss
How are you doing today my name is Eric Moore
Them her sisters right?
@@deeballa3 yes
@@raffinewhaley4710 only one is her sister, in the middle is Carolyn
Rip Queen! She had four sons. Two of them by the age of 15. She overcame alcohol abuse, bad marriages, problems with depression and weight gain. Yet, she sung up til the year of her death at 76 and didn't miss a beat! Rest on queen!!
Saint Aretha Amen
How are you doing today my name is Eric Moore
Say it! ❤️❤️
In spite of her difficulties her music will live on as long as mankind listens to recorded music
Saint Aretha
Public needs to know this is LIVE!!!!!! Aretha’s head voice and tonality was perfection and incredible!! The backing vocalists were fierce!
How are you doing today my name is Eric Moore
Head voice ? Isn`t that the same as falsetto ?
@@christhomas5761 No. falsetto (false voice) is a thinner and breathy sound, your throat is closed and your larynx is up, where the head voice is more rich in sound and your throat is opened and the larynx is lower. The head voice is more richer and more darker in tone and has a natural vibrato, falsetto doesn't. Using your head voice is healthier in the long run. Aretha had flawless technique and sung healthy.
just loved how Aretha let her background singers blow loud right with her...so smart!!!
Yes and she never seemed to sing a song the same twice. Compare this to the record. So much versatility.
The Wig is FABULOUS!!! The vocal arrangement PERFECT! Background Singers OUTSTANDING! This entire performance is TIGHT!!!! 😘
You 100% on your assessment on the Queen and her backup singers!
And this shade of green looked absolutely gorgeous on Aretha
Indeed, nothing to add,...magnifique, merveilleuse Aretha ;-)
She always had good background singers ♥️♥️♥️
I'm loving the wigs.
I don’t know what anybody else here is talking about, but Aretha’s vocal here is perfection, a little masterpiece, so creative and masterful and smooth. She was a genius.
Perfection!! When you can't Sang you"re say anything.
People don’t understand improvisation. It’s just like cooking : they think that if you don’t follow the recipe exactly as it’s written then you’re “doing it wrong. “
I belong to the Church of Aretha - she sends me into heaven every time.
I'm glad I didn't read any further on the comments, if people are saying that, because I have no interest in reading nonsense and ignorance. Aretha is 1 of the greatest ever to do it. Period.
She sounds wonderful and I like the arrangement
Them background singers are savage straight killed that do right
The Sweet Inspirations!
DEAN MARTELL wow is that what they were called they are pretty dope they could've made it solo
@@ajaydwayne5586 they actually DID have 2 solo albums 1 of them was her sistet CAROLYN FRANKLIN (deceased) & another CISSY HOUSTON! check out their music here on You Tube.
DEAN MARTELL wow you no I do think I remember someone said wow listen at Cissy Houston hold that not now why I have never really cared for sissy style if she birthed Whitney and sang with the queen she must've been pretty damn bad
Omg yes, they don’t sing like that no more!!
Nothing today compares to this.
You are so right, this is Singing frim the ❤ and soul.

No techno stuff...one mike for the background singers, crisp, clear, no auto tones...awesome Aretha. Loved the Merv Griffin show.

is it the sweet inspiration?
@@barteksosnowski9611 no it's not . And the short one in the middle is Carolyn Franklin, Aretha's sister

Her face showed she was a good person, her voice showed she was most gifted...R I P,Queen
I love Black people to sing from this era. I just realized that the most satisfying music in my life has been sung by Black people. Not meant to be a racist comment, just something that hit me all of sudden.
Her background singers are the bomb!
Yes sir ree ,never heard such good back up singers before.
Looks like Erma and Carolyn Franklin middle and left.
Yep! That's a vocal blend you can not get from strangers. That's chemistry!
Carolyn in the middle is the only sister performing with Aretha in this clip. The other two are not apart of the Sweet Inspirations, but the singer on the right released some singles as a solo artist but I cannot think of her name.
@@shaungresham4968 the singer on the right is CISSY HOUSTON.... the great background singer and Whitney Houston's mother
She is just so bright and free on those upper notes! You can really tell where her voice likes to be. This performance is just amazing.
I'm waving my hand in the air like i'm in church.
shview james I feel U baby, u feel it in your soul .
😁
😂🤣😂
LOL Who you telling'!?!?
These were the days when you had to be a good singer. I could listen to Aretha, her sister, Carolyn, cousin, Brenda, and the other background singer all day and all night.
The other is Cissy Houston, Whitney's mother
Cissy is not in the background on this one.
@@shadgreen9571 yes she is she’s the far right
@@khaorimerke.1254 That’s not Cissy.
@@khaorimerke.1254 Cissy and The Sweet Inspirations were certainly on the hit record version but they were not present for this live performance. This was a very busy period for The Sweet Inspirations as they were doing their own gigs AND doing backing vocals for everyone from Dionne Warwick, Solomon Burk, Wilson Pickett, Jackie DeShannon, Nina Simone, Dusty Springfield, and many, many more. If I'm not mistaken, Aretha's sister, Carolyn is in the center and her sister, Erma is far right. That may be cousin, Brenda far left.
There are several who claim to be queens, but only one who reigns.
AMEN SIR
Amen kiko
Kiko Giacomelli Cheers to that🥂
I HEARD THAT KIKO!!!! REAL QUEENS HAVE NATURAL CLASS!!!

Aretha background singer's are the truth!!!
That’s an understatement.
Aretha was hypnotic in her prime❤We will never see another artist like her again.
Can we just take a minute to say how beautiful Aretha Looked here! and that flawless voice of hers lawd have mercy . None and i mean could top that once in a thousand yer voice
She is so beautiful here and her voice......yesss
RIP Aretha - this version of a great song is mind blowing!!!
The "QUEEN" of Soul...❤️
Too bad they didn't use this version on the album.
There's something very special about her belting I can't explain it
It's has gut wrenching wail to it.Just amazing
dude if I wasn't at work I would be crying right at 3 seconds into Aretha singing, now I get why my mom would start balling on Aretha's slow stuff..I would be like Mom don't cry, she would be like SHUT UP..
Lol that's sweet!
I'm with momma Mas Emarod....I tell my kids that now. Hush when I'm crying
@@gbrow3191
😂😂 yall crazy..
Crying is cathartic and provides some relief from pain, disappointment and heartbreak even if momentarily. Feel kind of sad that your mom told you to shut up in a moment you showed concern. I can understand her not sharing what exactly what she was going through because you were a child, but a more gentle approach would have been nice. Even animals, particularly dogs, sense emotional distress from the humans they love and will do acts of kindness like snuggle up next to you, etc. I’m just saying 💁🏽♀️💁🏽♀️💁🏽♀️
Sounds like me and my son ❤
Wow! That's some BEAUTIFUL backup singing. Aretha is just divine.
Yeah, sometimes I love listening to the background singers from these days more than the record. You can learn so much about harmonizing from them, backup singers are often good enough to be solo artists themselves.
Alex Chen For sure. That is after all how the phenomenal LUTHER VANDROSS started.
beautiful harmonies!
+Alex Chen so true,I also pay close attention to the back up singer's .
2dasimmons One was Aretha's sister, another was Whitney Houston's mother, and I don't know the third one...
I never grow tired of listening and looking at her performances......this sounds sweeter than the actual recording..
Her voice was MUCH higher after she left that marriage.
Aretha had more talent at 15 yrs old in her pinky finger than most have in a lifetime.
She was just 25 singing this beautiful song. Background singers, whew!!!
Nobody comes close, I been in love with this woman all my life. The 👑 of soul
Steve Michaels wow.am a woman and I love her too.lol
Aretha Franklin...a once in a lifetime voice. She makes it look so effortless, but the passion in her vocals is 100% God-given Soul. You either have it, or you don't. No one - and I mean NO ONE - will ever be on her level.
The greatest singer ever. All hail the queen. I love all things Aretha. Thank you for sharing!
oneloveatatime Yes indeed
Rest on Queen
A voice like no other. I get goose bumps when I see her live performances.
Those backup singers, damn! They were not playing with that "Do Right" they wanted men to hear and understand them.
Back when you could be fully clothed and sell more records than the artists that strip down now
Actually no, Aretha was never a big seller as compared to Diana Ross or even Tina Turner at the time. She became a legend and icon based on her impact and talent.
@@bakarikentrell527 She finished first in sales in 1967. She definitely sold records.

This is how it’s done. Completely electrifying
All singers brought their A game to the show!!!
Unreal ! This is actually one of the best performances ever ! Crystal clear tone !
I didn't understand the hype about Aretha Frankin until I saw this performace. F*****g incredible. How can your live performance be better than your studio recording???!!
These modern-day artists could never.
There are a handful of new school singers that actually sing better live than recordings. If you weren't so biased or uninformed you'd know that.
Well Whitney Houston was a better live singer than her studio versions. 80's and 90's Whitney Houston live performances were out of this world.

Aretha said she never tired of performing her songs because she did the songs differently with every performance......and she did! A true master of her craft!

The Queen reigns supreme!!!! I absolutely love this song and it's message!!!!!!
When your back-up singers are just as BADASS!!!
The Queen of Soul recorded this right here in my home town. Muscle Shoals Alabama
Tripp Mcintyre: That sick demonic racist place. What possessed her to go to that GOD forsaken place?
Dan Penn & spooner Oldham took areatha to muscle shoals! The creation is so beautiful!
A CHOSEN VESSEL she wanted the Muscle Shoals Sound. And trust me from what I am told from her visit here. The Queen held court and everyone obeyed. Things have changed a lot here since then.
