An older gentleman a few miles down the road from us has one on a little drill press cause his arthritis is his hands cant take the shock of even a hatchet anymore
Love that idea. Thank u. I'm passing it on to my father who also recently has issues
I was going to say, this is an excellent option for people with disabilities or injuries that make using an axe or hatchet dangerous or impossible, but personally I love splitting firewood swinging an axe or hatchet, so it's not an option I would use.
They're reverse thread because drivers and impact guns have more torque in reverse gear than forward gear. Because if you have more forward power, your reverse won't be able to remove the bolt/screw/nut etc. More reverse power means you can never put on anything you can't then take off.
He pretty much proved your claim at 3:50...screwed the tool into a knot in reverse and couldn't back it out in forward...;)
Thats actually Rambo’s missing explosive arrowhead.
I've seen some very powerful explosive arrow heads. There are lots of creative folks 'out there'! 😉
3:37 “Let’s put it in that knot and see what happens.”
Every wood worker in America gets to the edge of the seat thinking, “oh this will be good. How’s he going to get it unstuck?” Lol.
That's the kind of thing trolls do and then write 1-star product reviews on Amazon.
@@codetech5598 Most of my 1-star reviews has to do with the sugar substitute used making my butthole turn into Niagara Falls.
The fact that you showed your mishaps and obviously learned how this works as you went, makes you valuable and reliable resource! You don’t pretend to have knowledge you don’t. I enjoy your channel!
I think the biggest benefit to this tool is that you don't have to go outside in the cold to chop wood-
You can literally be sitting in your living room making sticks in front of your fireplace without putting a hole in your floor lol
One benefit this tool doesn't have, cutting and splitting wood with an axe is an exercise that produces more testosterone than any other. Must be a Primal movement that our bodies recognize. 🤓🍻
@@alsaunders7805 Heavy weighted (IE with a barbell) deep squats are the medically proven exercise to increase the most testosterone in men just FYI.
The company I work for (CBI wood grinders) make huge ones of these for whole trees! They mount on excavators and are driven with hydraulics. It's called a 'Stump Screw'. It's cool to see such a tiny one.
Nice tool but I think I can split more with my hatchet in the time you are working with this. Good idea for disabled people though.
He made the vid to sell a little gadget - not truly to show a better way to chop wood. There's a reason why the axe has been a popular tool since the stone age.
Well he’s also saying how much easier it is then swinging a hatchet but yeah it all comes down to that Amazon money
Also if you’re in your living room and you need kindling i know I don’t wanna start smacking a hatchet around
Do i have a wood stove- No
Do i ever chop kindling -no
Will i ever chop kindling- no
Did i enjoy the video- absolutely
Because now you know you don't need to chop anything, just drive a big screw into it!
@@krowwithakay maybe it's cost efficient compared to Central air but it's messy, time consuming and hard on your floors. After you've factored in everything I believe electric is the way to go. Although wood heat is much nicer.
Bought one. Tried it with a corded drill and released the magic smoke from the motor.
Amusing observation! It confirms my vision of "what could be the harm in it?"😋
I was thinking as watching this “man you’re gonna warm the hell out of that drill!”
This is so great for the elderly. I think it would be great to share this with people, who heat with wood, but can't have injuries/are old, need kindling.
That thing may not cut you, but it would snap an old wrist in a heartbeat.
Not so sure about that. I am pretty strong fella, and I almost broke my wrist... When it catches, it catches.....
This was great! I am quite disabled and just moved in with family in the great north, and we have a heat exchanger fireplace with a blower, a wood fired boiler and a pellet furnace. I can't help with splitting the huge logs that they truck in for the winter around here, but with one of these I could sit out by the wood pile and shred up some kindling to feel more helpful!
No, I don't feel offended. A more comprehensive way of saying would be "If a hatchet gives you difficulty" Because that isn't just women, and some women are a BEAST with a hatchet.
No one cares lol. Women who are a beast with a hatchet aren't the ones getting offended.
Everyone in here needs to wait until they turn 60, then you'll see how useful this is.
@NonyaBusiness! and for someone who is on a fixed income and can't afford to install a $20000 heating system?
@NonyaBusiness! I get your point and don't really think that this is an efficient way to make kindling for most people, but this is just one of those little things that might help people keep their independence as long as they possibly can in life. Also you should look up the video of a guy who put one on his car to split large pieces of wood 😂
I like the concept, but this video convinced me that an axe is way more efficient. A hatchet for kindling. I'm not as tough as I used to be, but I have no problem swinging an axe. Yet.
I’ll stick with my hatchet
While I would imagine if I used one of those I would prefer an axe but for example my pregnant wife has to build fires when I'm not around and she has cut maybe 10 pieces of fire wood in her life so I think it has a place for her. So i know that shes not cutting off fingers lol
I am so getting this. I’m a big dude and I can swing an axe. But not in my cozy pants and house slippers
Certainly looks easier than chopping wood, but not much quicker.
I feel you could develop a good pace over time but what is that going to cost in drills?
Also, it didn't look super safe. At least not safe enough for some members of my family to use.
@@tomsoki5738 it's not safer but there are a hundred years of rules and safe practice when it comes to using axes, things that I can teach. To use this drill technique one would have to develop some new safe practices. I fear fingers will be lost in that learning process.
In the 60’s I tested a new auger wood splitter designed to take into the field. You jacked up your truck and removed the wheel from a drive hub. This auger then mounted to the hub with the lug nuts.
Put the vehicle in low drive and let it idle. As the auger turned, you simply pushed your log against the tip. Worked great. You could cut, split and load right in the field.
However, it really didn’t catch on because consensus of opinion seemed to be that it was a waste of fuel. :)
maybe someone could "invent" a sharp wedge at the end of a stick that you could swing...
FINALLY, a less efficient way to split firewood AND you wear out a your body, drill and pay for electricity. Simply brilliant.
Ya, I will stick with my little fiskars hatchet. It is a cool idea. Might be good for people that r not good with a 🪓.
@@chevy4x466 a hatchet or a cheap machete and a hammer , both work good
And don't put a lot of wear on your drill
Amazing! In order to eliminate the reciprocating twisting movement back to your hand when it gets stiff or stuck you should use instead of a regular drill a impact driver, try it out and thanks me later
"A simple way" - custom grinds the shaft, manhandles the wood, pins it down under forearm with body weight, gets auger stuck, fetches channel lock pliers, works to remove auger.... I'll just enjoy my time on the east coast here with my Fiskars hatchet. #AllInJest
Hey you can't sell auger bits if you don't appear to like them. If you don't call them simple, you'll sell even less.
I'll tell you what I learned you don't grind the back of the bit that's going in your drill or it'll spin crooked and that I don't like nothing worse than trying to drill something crooked
I've done a bit of fiskin in my time. I like to get elbow deep, really scratch those itches.
I'll stick with my hatchet or axe. The battery never dies on those!
I think this would be perfect for someone older or that for some reason or another doesn't have a lot of strength on them and want to be able to do it on their own
Bill The Tractor Man The battery died on my hatchet and axe when I turned 63. :(
My first thought exactly. Also, edited this comment to say this. Splitting firewood versus splitting kindling are much different levels of exertion.
Back in the mid 70's I saw a large version using the rear wheel on a pickup truck.
Used one,for several years..Kind of Dangerous,if you were not paying attention..We had a kill switch for the vehicle engine,Mounted on the rear fender by magnet,if trouble occurred..Got a few smashed fingers and splinters,if you didnt have the wood, anchored well..
I just saw this video and had the same thought. Liability suits probably started a day or two after they started shipping!
My wife has left the wood splitting, stacking, and haulling into the wood box to me. By late March I am ready to stop burning wood for heat, but of course we have to get into mid May. These things look like a good tool to have in the wood pile. I think the wood needs to be totally bone dry. I use a 10 ton hydraulic log splitter that takes about 2 weeks to split almost 3 cords. Some chunks could be smaller. That's where this gizmo would be handy
That laugh when he figured out that the bit was threaded backwards and started whizzing on the kindling...priceless
I wonder if the reverse thread is so it can be put in the chuck of an electric or fuel-powered Augur device without having to fabricoble the output direction. I don't really know, cause I don't deal with motors enough to know the default spinning direction. I am just spitballing here.
Like the caveman figures out the wheel
Ohhhh ohhhhh ohhhhh oooooo ooooo!!!!!!!
I'm wondering if a hammer drill would produce similar results.
Wood DustJLR A hammer drill would not do much in this situation.
Or a hammer drill with a really wide chisel bit, the sort of thing you might use to break up an old tile floor. I wonder how that would work with some of this really dry firewood Cody has.
I would agree that it would be interesting to find out and I don't think that they understand that ryobi makes a small handheld ratched hammer drill for the set that same drill usually comes in. Not a handheld jackhammer but a reciprocating drill for metal screws.
My dad has a huge contractor level drill with a hammer chisel tip and it works great
Well, a hammer drill applies impact force along the axis of the auger. You would be fighting the auger. Kind of like using a hammer on a screw. An impact driver, however, applies a rotational impact force which would work with the screw action of the auger. If you could figure out how to attach it to a half-inch battery impact, it would take a lot to stop it.
The best kindling I've found for a wood stove is the pine shaving bedding you can get by the bundle at feed stores. It burns like wood, but catches like tinder. I'd use a few handfulls under my firewood in the stove and light it on both sides and push the door closed just so there's a 1" gap and open the vent. Before you know it you have a roaring fire and it's time to close the doorand enjoy. No splitting required. I'd fill up my ash bucket and by the time I had lit enough fires to empty the bucket it was time to clean out the stove.
this has reminded me and i think i need to make a PSA: be warned, it burns just as well when it's used as bedding.
@@angrydragonslayer Agreed. Don't use for ground cover in your smoking area...
@@brianvandy4002 we found this out when lightning hit my sisters hamster house
I could see this being really helpful for people with limited dexterity, as long as you can put on gloves and squeeze the trigger, you can split wood.
We've got a large one hooked to a tractor and it work wonders.
Can't imagine we could split so much wood using a maul or wedges in like three times the time we did with this thing.
Well you do need upper body strength and decent aim to use a splitting maul.
Me: I've never watched anything related to anything like this.
You tube: This is perfect for you.
FINALLY - A very slow way to cut firewood.
Slow, non explosive movement that requires little effort. If you want speed, swing a damn axe. Many older people would rather let a tool do the work than risk injury.
@@juliansanderson839 I can think of several faster, easier, non - explosive ways to cut wood vs. this method. Don't be so sensitive, Jill.
@@bigwon5883 how much easier could it possibly get? You literally just press a button with this method. I’m not being sensitive, your comment just makes you seem extremely close minded and intentionally ignorant.

I Spent years going out in the woods with my father helping pile wood he cut in the back of his truck then getting home and splitting them all by hand with the splitting maul axe.
I remember when I was a boy my grandpa and my self would split a truck load of kindling every year. I miss those days so bad he was the best grandpa that already lived.
Nice wood piles. I've never seen rounded wood piles/stacks. I might have to try that particular method of arranging the cut wood on the next piles I work on. It looks much more appealing to the eyes and I'm sure my neighbors will appreciate it a tad more then regular wood piles or whatever
Lmao I love this guy "oh no are you offended?"
That was money, wasn’t it? SNOWFLAKE ALERT! “So who would find this useful? Well, women.... OH, NOOOOO!!!”
As soon as he said that, this channel became my favorite channel on CZcams!
That's just biology. Take a large enough sample size and you'll start seeing a conclusive trend. Generally speaking women are physically weaker than men. That's an undeniable fact.
@@Diabolos1 That is true, generally. But its the human condition to have exceptions to every rule. There are some really strong females who could split wood better then most men. Its perfectly fine to generalize, and people who get offended by it are, as Glen said, Snowflakes. Just make sure you are in fact generalizing, because if someone just flat out says every woman is weaker than every man, that paints that person as sexist, and ignorant.
Be offended....get 100 guys and 100 girls lined up and see who can chop and split the most wood in an hour and men WILL win by a mile. Thats nature....if you're offended by nature, thats your problem LOL
The battery in my axe wont hold a charge, so I had to use a cordless drill
This is pretty neat. I've used one of the large ones a few times, not for any length of time but it definitely worked. I prefer my grandad's old home made log splitter but it was more comfortable to use one of these augers.
Me, lived my whole life without the need for splitting wood:
Neat, I should get one of those.
When I was a teenager (i'm now in my 50s) my granddad had something nearly exactly like that except his mounted on a tractor PTO. It worked quite well

This brings kindling production indoors! No more banging steel into the end of a log on a solid surface, like the dining room table.
My father in law has been using an 8 inch diameter auger for years to split wood. I can't believe this is "revolutionary" just now. He's got a machine he built himself connected to a 2 kilowatt motor that has been able to split wide diameter logs for decades. It is for sure a lot more effective than any other method at home.
Appreciate the early release! Membership value right there!
Thanks for sharing. Clearly a West Coast novelty 😁. Have a great day.
Simply Useless on Australian Hardwood.
Yes they wouldn’t have a clue if they were confronted with a decent piece of ironbark or red box
True. I built a hydraulic splitter with a huge I-beam and a hydraulic ram off an excavator, driven by a two stage pump. Worked for a while, then on a particularly nasty bit of Box, the I-Beam twisted up like a pretzel before the foot sheared off. I've never seen metal rip like that.
Hi Mal, I’ve always wondered if you could use an excavator ram like that. Did the pump come off the excavator? What motor did you use to drive the pump.?
@@jackavalon8366 Any double acting hydraulic ram will work. The bigger the better. The pump was a 11 gpm 2 stage pump from Northern Tool USA. Driven with a Honda 160 4-stroke clone, with a lovejoy coupling connecting the motor output to the pump shaft.
The way he giggled when he realized the threads are backwards was gold
Except they are not backwards , he had to have started with his drill in reverse
Watch any of the video. , the drill is turning forward ( clockwise looking from the rear )
Positive aspect is also that you can split wood anywhere with it, even indoors next to fireplace.
Ostap1974 are you implying that you don’t swing an axe inside by the fire place?
Its called a hatchet. Yknow the tool thats been around for thousands of years(in a stone form then iron). If you need kindling use that.
Or a froe would also work well, if you decided to get one. They use them to split shakes and shingles, they would be fantastic for kindling
Your drill has a 3/8” chuck. The shaft is a 1/2”.

I have one of the larger ones for splitting fire wood. It runs directly off the tractor pto. I’ve split wood along side a normal hydraulic splitter and darn near doubled his production because there is no “reset “ to get the cylinder back to the start position. Only drawback is the stringy wood can be a pain.
They're listening to me because my husband and I had a recent conversation if there was an easier way to split wood and here your video pops up in my feed. Thank you for the tip just the same, though! 😀

In case someone hasn't already said this...setting 1 is is low torque. 2 is for drilling. Ideal setting for this application is 1.
Looks like a neat way to go. Bigger augers on bigger machines are much more powerful for bigger pieces of wood. I bought a Kindling Cracker and I'm sure once I'm set up outside or in a garage, I'm going to get more done than the drill auger you show, but it is one way to go.

In Ireland I would have referred to that as a "cone bit" and an "auger bit" as something similar to a wood drillbit which has a screw thread at its point .

Seems like a lot of traditional know it alls are completely disregarding someone with an injury, a child who isn't old enough to swing an axe, a person who's no longer capable, etc. Is this better than an axe? Obviously not...but it works and it's worth knowing.
People always act like this. There are bad ways to do stuff and good ways. Traditional just means "it's been done this way for awhile" or "In the beginning of doing something it was done this way" and people tend to cling to tradition because they grew up with it or prefer it personally. The problem comes in when they begin to become blinded by personal preference seeing the traditional way at the only way since they like it or think it's the best without logic.
If you find a good way to do something it's fine to do especially if there are benefits to it. We aren't sure yet if it's more efficient but IF it's more efficient to use the wood augur drill there's no logic in arguing for a hatchet when it comes to speed and ease. Someone can say oh it's better in an outdoors-man scenario or such but that's not the discussion. Michael France response is stupid and irrelevant to the discussion but that's what people do online, talk nonsense.
Good point Hayden. A child too small to swing an axe that needs to start a fire to survive can just pop down to the hardware store to buy a drill and they'll be saved!
I need to get one of these. We heat our house with a wood stove. I've been clearing some of my property here in gold bar Washington for a dirt bike track and I've been cutting firewood for the last 3 days. This would be great for using in the house next to the wood stove.
GO HAWKS! I'm a 4'11" widow with a wood stove and no elec heat and don't live too far from you. However I now have a 6'2" boyfriend who insists I'm a dainty little dew drop that despite nearly 40yrs of chopping fire wood... warms you twice, as mom used to say... it's now considered far too dangerous for me. Still... I WANT that wood auger! After all, you never know... with his bad back and all.... I may be back in the wood shed, chopping wood again, lol!
The main advantage I see is for people who want to make some kindling wood without having to chop it in their living room. This solves the problem of pounding the floor or hearthstone to bits with a hatchet.
I love that you are also talking to us women who need this info to safely cut kindling! I appreciate how you included the hassles you encountered and how you handled them with a good attitude. I am hoping that the link to purchase a drill auger does not take us to the wonky one that you demonstrated with in your video!
i think it would be good on a decent size press where you wouldnt need to hold the drill
Another great video ! ! I forgot on the last video, but not this one. Wranglerstar, remember Psalm 91, the prayer of protection. Neat tool! when you said this would be good for women and kids I was waiting for you to add "or east coast guys" 😄 big yes to the race 👍
This works a lot better with a hammer drill or a drill with a secondary grip and either a big Rigid Octane type battery or an outlet. I can power my hammer drill off my truck's 120v bed outlet while use a similar tool and it not only splits kindling, but it can quarter it if you are cutting softwood.
One of those augers mounted in a drill press could be really useful
I got a pretty old Milwaukee magnum cord drill I bought way back ...its a torque monster and should drive this pretty good :)
I have one of those myself. Its also very good at keeping the dentist in business. I found out the hard way drilling overhead with a large auger bit. It felt like i was hit with a ball bat when that drill handle spun around and smacked up beside my head.
1/2" bit would fit a 3/4" heavy duty drill
just ordered one of these can't wait to see how it splits wood, I have some very hard wood to deal with
I remember, in a workshop labor, we had a hand drill that had a bit more powerful torque than the rest. After a few weeks we just discarded it because it's an imminent risk to our wrists, that twist when the tool gets stuck in the work piece can be very very painful (especially in repetitive tasks, like this)
RIP the longevity of anyone's drill that runs that regularity.
A drill is designed to drill holes, it's not going to harm a drill any more than using it to drill holes. That's not a dinky drill, it's a DeWalt cordless (midrange pro-sumer tool).
This screw device would be better with an Impact Driver (1/4") or a Impact Wrench (1/2" drive) as they have more dynamic torque yet don't twist your arm off. The most common type have an SDS stem on them, for use with a decently powerful masonry drill.
These have been around forever. My neighbor has a very large one he puts on the back tire of his pick up truck and splits real firewood with the truck in Forward at idle.
Years ago "The Mother Earth News" had several articles about a larger auger that was attached to the drive wheel of a truck/car. Jack up the rear end and remove the tire and attach this bigger auger to that drive wheel and up the RPMs and split FIRE WOOD.
I recall seeing the larger version welded to a tire rim and used on a jacked-up vehicle back in the ‘70s. It would split the log into several pieces in about five seconds.
I have seen someone with an auger attached to his car to spit logs like that.
adamfierstine yes i made one yrs ago , i welded it to the nut for the wheel hub. worked like a charm.
