Documentary on great jazz guitarist Tal Farlow (1921 - 1998))

- From my collection of off-the-air recordings on VHS cassettes, this is a wonderful documentary produced by New Jersey Public Television in 1981. (I recorded it from a rerun in March of 1983.) The subject: Tal Farlow--jazz guitarist and sign painter. Yes, Tal worked as a professional sign painter in Sea Bright, New Jersey, as depicted in the film. However, he also recorded as a leader and as a sideman, starting with the Red Norvo Trio in 1951. The film includes commentary by guitarist George Benson, pianist Jimmy Lyons, the above-mentioned vibes player Red Norvo, Tal's wife Tina and others. Tal can also be seen and heard performing with pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Red Mitchell and others.
An anonymous copyright claim completely blocked viewing of this wonderful documentary. The only way I could remove some of the blocks was to permit a pretty brutal hack job offered by CZcams which removed some music; but, it also removed some commentary, some dialog and some material which couldn't possibly trigger a legitimate copyright claim. The material that was cut: 1) commentary by guitarist George Benson about Tal which opens the program (not a musical performance); 2) a 1950 recording of the bop tune, "Move", by the Red Norvo Trio, which included Tal and Charles Mingus (and which, by the way, has been posted by someone else on CZcams and has not been blocked); 3) Tal's description of how he got started as a sign painter; 4) film of Tal painting the name of a boat on its hull, 5) more commentary by George Benson; 6) a discussion between Tal and Canadian-American guitarist, Lenny Breau; 7) two brief duets between Tal and Lenny; 8) Tal's introduction and walk-on at the beginning of a performance with Tommy Flanagan and Red Mitchell. - Hudba

TAL FARLOW passed away in 1998 and has been gone 25 years now on this date of July 25 2023 - - - HE will be remembered as one the greatest musicians not just in jazz but in music - - But to me and many others not only a musician but a gentle soft spoken genius -

I met Tal at the Tramshed in Woolwich many years ago . A rainy night in south east London.
He had Dave Green and Alan Ganley with him. An audience of only a few folk. I sat at the feet of the Master. He gave me so much time after the concert, and signed my LPs. A wonderful player and Gentleman. We are fortunate to have this wonderful little film. We won’t hear his like again.
John Fenner, I experienced the same thing at the Hyatt House Hotel Silver Screen Room - Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood California in August 1984 - I sat there in front of HIM - Tal Farlow with hardly any audience there - then after the show he gave me all his time - Talked about his albums of that I had bought many years before - I had one lesson with him at his home in Sea Bright , New Jersey in February 1995 my mom came with me ! I have it recorded on a cassette - I will put it on youtube soon
26:00 i have felt the same way. I'm glad tina brought this mental health incident up, even when she hesitated to do so. It's nothing to be ashamed of, and it is a very human moment. In 2024 especially, I think this is a relevant moment. RIP Tal, beautiful guitar player, even more beautiful as a person
I found this part of film almost unbearably poignant.
I remember an interview with Tal Farlow where he was being complimented on the technical skill of his playing. He said, "Well it helps if you have really big hands."
The great TAL FARLOW... unique, amazing, there'll never be an other one like him... What a joy to hear him, see him, and what a gentleman ... SUPERB... thanks for sharing. Every guitar player needs to be aware of TAL FARLOW.

That's a shame that youtube does stuff like this, but i get why they do what they do. I appreciate you making changes to be able to keep this video on youtube, especially the "fascinating rhythm" song!!
@@JakesPhoto_ Thanks, Jake, for your comment. Of course, I didn't make the changes myself. I reluctantly accepted CZcams's changes. There should be an appeal process. A few years ago, something like this occurred when I posted the the three TV networks' coverage of the death of Benny Goodman on their nightly news programs. As with this posting, the cuts didn't seem to make any sense whatsoever. Just to see what would happen, I uploaded the excluded material, individually, in "unlisted" postings; and, no claims were presented. Go figure.
Hi Thank you for your hard work... I recorded a video off the TV of the documentary some years ago in England the name of the program was called Swing Shift channel 4 ... Sadly i lent it to a friend who lost the video

I was just thinking, if any of their concerts were recorded in full and professionally, audio or video, what a great album that might make. There is the Farlow-Flanagan-Mazzaroppi "Chromatic Palette" album, which is wonderful, but the trio with Red Mitchell is extra special.

I read somewhere that Tal and George van Eps played together a few times. That must have been incredible in every way. Too bad there's no footage of that encounter. Thankfully, we have this wonderful documentary on the life and legacy of Tal!
Ed Bickert told Mark Miller this in his 1978 Guitar Player interview: “Farlow and Kessel came through town [Toronto, ca. 1956-58] eventually,” Ed explains, “and I made a point of trying to meet them and get together with them somehow. Tal came through with [pianist] Eddie Costa and [bassist] Vinnie Burke. We got together and played after-hours at the House of Hambourg-used up most of the night doing that. It was a big thrill for me, of course.”
That would have been a fun jam to see--Farlow was 11 years older than Bickert, but was probably more of a modernist at the time than Bickert.

Thank you for your nice comment - I knew TAL FARLOW as a personal friend - yes the HERO for many people not just musicians - TAL FARLOW was a man of love - kindness- humility - and more - He is in Heaven now watching all of us as we remember HIM -
HE WAS KIND ENOUGH TO HAVE MYSELF AND ANOTHER THEATER TECHNICIAN FRIEND IN ONE DAY, AS WE HAPPENED TO BE IN SEA BRIGHT AND HAD A CAR. GOT TO TAKE A FOUR HOUR LESSON WITH HIM ABOUT SIX MONTHS LATER WITH HIM. STILL SHAKING ALL OVER, IN A GOOD WAY.

Yeah, I think that was just a way of saying "I don't like the stress". His wife's comments at 25:14 shine some light on this. I find a lot of musicians aren't such great communicators in formal interviews, either because they just aren't verbally oriented, or they just want to give an answer that satisfies the interviewer to keep things moving along. And when the question gets at something they might be sensitive about, even moreso. But most of what really matters is right on the records.

This is great! Glad I stumbled upon it. I first dicovered Tal back in 2003 while surfing through the online Mosaic catalog. Love listening to him.
Got to visit TAL, and took a lesson at his place in SEA BRIGHT,N.J. . WAS ON A COLD DAY IN 1995 ? I THINK. INCREDIBLE HUMAN BEING. I LEARNED MORE ABOUT LIFE AND MUSIC WITH THE ONE LESSON I HAD WITH HIM, AND THE ONE LESSON I GOT TO TAKE FROM CAROL KAY IN SANTA CRUZ,CA, CIRCA 1982, THAN I THOUGHT I COULD EVER KNOW, ABOUT ANYTHING. INCREDIBLE.

It is good to see the streets of SEA BRIGHT , NEW JERSEY at the start of this TAL FARLOW documentary video - My mom and I visited Tal Farlow at his home there 16 Peninsula - February 1995 - for a lesson - he was very cordial to us !
Talmage is my First cousin 3 times removed 😁, Tal's uncle, Charles Farlow, was a professional golfer that even taught Marge Burns
I think I have the full docu. I was getting Lenny Breau stuff and came across it. Lenny was pretty full of himself as I remember. They had an up & down exchange.
Yeah, he approached Tal and basically started bragging that he “figured out” what Tal did on the guitar. Personally I think Tal is a deeper artist.
There was Django Reinhardt + Charlie Christian who both were very melodic - But to me TAL FARLOW brought out the guitar more HARMONICALLY than the ones that came before HIM and since then it has been that way due to HIS style !

John, I had a copy at one time. If I can find it & make a copy i will let you know here. No promise I lose a lot of stuff. I know it has a lot of Lenny Breau. I was gathering stuff on him, Lenny, at the time. i'll look for it.
