- Illegal gold mining in French Guiana is causing widespread environmental damage and health risks as hundreds of tons of toxic mercury are released into the ground and waterways each year. This activity has also led to rapid deforestation. To combat the issue, the French army has destroyed over 30,000 camps and deployed more than a thousand soldiers and gendarmes to crack down on the illegal practices of clandestine gold panners. However, this mission has already resulted in several fatalities.

This is not the Republic of Guyana, it's French Guiana, where French laws apply. The mining going on is illegal, thus the people supplying the illegal miners are accessories to criminal activity. Not unlike if you sold a gun to a criminal whom you knew was going to use it to murder somebody.

Things like using mercury, hydraulic mining are absolutely horrible. Without well done reclamation it's ecological disaster. It's not like people weren't all over in these ancient jungles before, we are just the latest to go. Advances in Lidar and finding ancient advanced terra-preta has shown that large populations, cities once lived in the Amazon. Yea, it's man made.
