The Gruelling 3,400 Mile Journey Of The Medieval Pilgrims | Pilgrimage | Chronicle

- Simon Reeve began his journey in Canterbury and has finally reached Istanbul. Here was once a busy medieval staging post for pilgrims to the Holy Land. Before falling to the Ottoman Empire, it was the centre of Roman Christianity under Emperor Constantine. His mother Helena, arguably the first pilgrim to the Holy Land, brought back relics from Jerusalem to fill the city's churches, which made it a major destination for pilgrimage in its own right for centuries to come. Simon visits the magnificent Hagia Sophia and a traditional Turkish bath, discovering that pilgrims brought public bathing back with them to Europe, showing how pilgrimage spread practical ideas as well as religious ones.

“Don’t cry, Simon.” 😂 Simon, it’s okay to cry!
Whenever anybody says “Istanbul,” or “Constantinople,” the cover by They Might Be Giants runs through my mind….so it’s pretty much constant as I watch this documentary!
Thank you for another gorgeous production.💗
The music in this episode is way too loud. You can't even hear the narration half the time.
The sound level of the narration did seem to vary quite a bit. 🤔
It happens a lot on this channel. Poor visual quality too. 12 minutes in and I'm giving up on this one.
I didn't find it a problem at all.
Wow this was such a great documentary, his perspective was so good and I just really enjoyed this.
He's not a historian. It's basically Anglo propaganda. It's a dry narrative with a cynical faith.
It b it’s
Thank you. I felt I learned a lot. The scenery was stunning.
What such an amazing video, I had the opportunity to travel to the Levant amd most of the places visited. Thanks for making ,a relive my pilgrimage.
Amazing video & wonderful documentary, although the music in the background was so overwhelming
It is an old record, since then Hagha Sofia was turned into a mosque again. Now nobody can see the beautiful mosaics.
I, like the host, was raised within a Christian community but no longer am I member of any faith group.
During the watching of this, I again, like the host couldn't help but feel a "stirring" from within. I don't know if it was nostalgia or a real wish for spiritual faith again.
That's the sign of a very good doc.
Thank you - what a beautiful film - and a lovely story of discovery. I am a wishful skeptical believer who nonetheless can feel the depth of all human longing in these places, and the story of Jesus Christ. It is THAT that is the real story - that we all have a deep need to know this life is not all there is, that we are not just here struggling to make sense of it all, and getting no answers, that our children's lives are not for nothing ! For the thing is IF this life is just our little 70+ years then we are nothing, then there is no point to this gorgeous orb that is our home, and all is a waste of beauty. Thanks again ~!
Imagine the living hell this was for introverts. As an atheist, (who would have almost certainly had to fake it every damn day if their life, the desire to unalive myself on such an arduous and pointless journey would have been to much to resist. Periodt!
Plus all the times I needed him to build a fire, or something worse needed a little more thiught and attention….
Hagia Sofia is a mosque again since 2020.
FANSTASTIC HOST
Propaganda. Not a real Historian.
Too loud music!!!!
Background music needs to be louder I can still hear the narrator ......somewhat.
Adds all over the shop ....19 second one to start with ..well done Google..
So, is St Helena the Patron Saint of archaeologists?
jeezuz! the host is kyooooot!!!
He's not a Historian. He's there for the propagation of propaganda.
18:10 Is he saying the wall is ruining lives on both sides, or the conflict?
Either way, the wall has been shown to be protecting lives.
Did no one vet this production? The level of the music is too high.
It's been a thing on this channel. Other than that I love the content, but for some reason their audio is sometimes way off
@@jalight27 Yes it’s a pity. I’ve been to these places and it’s wonderful see them again in this context.
WHAT?!? CAN'T HEAR YOU?
WHAT?!?! CAN'T HEAR YOU!!

Sorry, couldn’t make it past the ridiculously cheery music from the first couple of minutes...

Joseph of Arimathea brought Christianity to England after he laid Jesus to rest in a tomb he had prepared for himself. Glastonbury, England is where Joseph of Arimathea thrust the staff into the ground.
That depends who you listen to !
@@veronicaroach3667 Check it out. Do research. I go by truth and fact. I'm Christian Orthodox and pray to Joseph of Arimathea''s Icon twice a day that depicts the Glastonbury Thor in England. I have researched a lot for years. Jesus was a wanted man. When Joseph of Arimathea asked for Jesus's Body, Joseph, who was a Sanhedrin, revealed his connection to Jesus and angered the other Sanhedrins who felt betrayed. Remember, the Sanhedrins demanded Pontius Pilot to crucify Jesus. Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea properly laid Jesus to rest. It is the Jewish way to properly lay a 'family member' to rest. If you think in depth and look at it from the perspective of who and what took place during that time, you'll see things more clearly. Did you know Jesus was an Essene? During that time there were Pharisees, Sadducees and Essenes.
Nazareth+Essene=Nazarene
Before you leave a comment like you did to me, back up your claim with facts. I leave comments on what I have learned to share with others of what I know 'as fact'. (Did you notice I typed 'family members'? Did you know Joseph of Arimathea was in the mining business? Did you know that Cornwall, England was a place for mining? Did you know the miners in Cornwall sang a song 'Joseph was a tin man...''? Did you know Joseph was said to be the wealthiest man on earth?)
Did you know the Dead Sea Scrolls that were found at Qumran were where Essenes lived? Did you know some of the scrolls were written in Aramaic the language Jesus spoke? Check out everything I wrote here. If you're interested in learning more about the Essenes, your library hopefully has DVD's from 'Great Courses'. The Essenes were incredibly strict.
I have provided you a lot of information and there's more that I have learned that I haven't shared here. It's in your hands now to confirm everything I said is fact. Good luck.
They came here with the cross in one hand and the sword in the other.
And Islam invaded with a scimitar in one hand and a crescent in the other. What's your point?
Why do idiots act like Christians were the only ones who went to war? Islam was just as brutal... how do you think Turkey was formed? By negotiation?
My point is that humans are two faced. We worship a god who wanted us to love our enemies, return good for evil, turn the other cheek, etc., but when it comes to furthering our own greed, we will pervert the teachings of Christ to suit our own desires. And as far as I know, Islam is not quite as hypocritical. Mohammed was a warrior, not a gentle teacher of peace. Do you think that Jesus would approve of the way the Spanish conducted themselves in the "New" World? Or the Inquisition?
Nothing is macabre when you worship a dead guy!
Gruelling pilgrimage? Did you get stuck in traffic on the way to the airport? I was expecting a story of how early pilgrims actually managed to survive such a journey, not this weak travelogue.
Do you know what I see in this presenter ( probably the BBC) is unbelievable arrogance and contempt for the everyday person quite disgusting
The bias of that israeli police officer… called Islam’s holiest site Temple Mount instead of Al Aqsa Mosque.
Presenter also neglected to mention that the roads and check points he used are the ones used by the Israeli occupation and not those of the general Palestinian people.
So Islam's holiest site is in Jerusalem and not Mecca?
Are you sure about that?
The overpowering and inappropriate music makes this unwatchable ... Shame.
Religion. opium of the peoples
All bcuz a book of fairytales vaguely said so.....
Free Palestine
From the river to the sea!
I was enjoying this until it got political. Shame on you.
Religion has always been political, stop acting childish.
@@Rye_Toast exactly 💯
Since when was religion NOT political? 🤔
History is politics
its about Pilgrimage..ergo about religion and fanatical maniacs....someone is bound to get offended...thank God I'm an Atheist ! 🙏😂
can barely hear the narration over the totally unnecessary music. Why do this?
