  • More than 100 Reserve Officer Cadets have completed eight weeks of intensive training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
    They’ve been on the Commissioning Course Short - which is the route Reserve Officers take, rather than the usual 44-week course.
    His Majesty the Sultan of Oman watched the parade and in particular his son His Highness the Crown Prince.

    Great to see that the Army now takes Reserve forces seriously and gives these part-time soldiers 8 weeks of Sandhurst training before they're Commissioned . It used to be only a 2-week course in the days of the old TAVR. It's well short of the Regular Officers' 44 weeks, but it's still a great start for a Reserve Officer.

    Samething here in Canada between the Regular and Reserve Force. There was always a hudge divide between the two, Until the start of Afghanistan, As a reservists at the time, the Reg forces started changing their mind set.. Since a Reservists has no obligation to go overseas..Through the years since the start of the Former YUGOSLAVIA and finally Afghanistan sealed the the gap between the two. Reservists were volunteering beyond what was expected of them. As i volunteered for many since the early 90s and have a different attitude when it came to dealing with the Reg for until I transferred to the Reg later in my 26yr career..and missing it more then i could've imagined.

    Does the UK have a "Military Academy", e.g., a 3 - 4-or 5 yr. institution like the USMA whereby cadets heading to the full-time Forces get a university education with an academic degree along with their military training & commission? Or is Sandhurst (which I do know has been turning out British military officers for 100's of years) an British military institution to just train/make officer's, much like the various US Services have their individual Officer Training School's?

    • @jamesdaniels4689
      @jamesdaniels4689 Před rokem +1

      So for the UK Sandhurst is where all army officers (to my knowledge) will train and it doesn't provide a uni education alongside it. We do have AFC Harrogate which people can join at 16/17 and allows them to get some academic quals alongside doing their basic training for soldier entry. Nothing like USMA though

    • @nigg2811
      @nigg2811 Před rokem +1

      Cadets training for Permanent Regular Commissions used to do 2 years at Sandhurst, where the second year was academic. But this disappeared in about 1970. Now it's a 44-week course for Regular Commissions, or an 8-week course for Army Reserve Officers and Professionally Qualified Officers (like Doctors and Lawyers). 80% of Regular Army cadets are already University graduates, while Professionally qualified Officers would all be graduates. The Army also offers generous bursaries for Officers and future Officers to do a University degree.

      No. The usual route is do your degree, join the army, do your 44 week course. I think that there are opportunities to do higher education courses (MSc etc) later on if it's considered relevant. But there's no direct equivalent to West Point or Annapolis - our military isn't really big enough to make it economic, and I don't think it fits the British ethos - I think that they want officers to have as wide a life experience as possible, and being taught alongside other officers for four years doesn't really expose you to a wide range of people and their opinions, which is part of the point of attending university - I'm not suggesting that West Point and Annapolis don't give an excellent academic education.

    • @Luke-ic8qi
      @Luke-ic8qi Před rokem +2

      A large amount of officers who complete sandhurst without a university education will go on to study a relevant bachelors when they are a lieutenant or captain as they generally need a degree to become a major.
