Welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 58 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They can make you headbang, they can make you pogo, they can make you cry like a baby. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and world class musicians to boot. They are currently into their 11th year with the original line up.
Btw, Miku the rhythm guitarist (red rose) formed the band. She had the idea of Band-Maid after working as a maid in Japanese maid cafe's. Her idea is a concept called "The Gap" - that is what you see (cute maids) is NOT what you get (Hard Rock/Punk/Metal). They take the maid café concept literally. They call their concerts "servings" and their fans "Masters and Princesses". Oh, and Miku is an 810 year old small pigeon. Welcome to the pigeon hole Po!

Band Maid. Let the cuteness distract you. Let the outfits fool you.
As an old blues rock musician and fan, these 5 Japanese musicians are the most interesting; I argue important; artists to hit the rock scene in a generation.
“Choose Me.” Their third single. Pop punk rock dynamics. But this is only one facet of their talents.
“DICE,” hair metal done Maid style.
    “From Now On,” metal instrumental
“Moratorium,” LIVE. Alternative rock with melodic elements.
Throw a dart. You will hear something you never expected. Guaran-damn-teed. 🤘🏽

Dr Rock and Todd Bobby, are you prepared to get your butts kicked?! Well, are you? The NEXT Band-Maid song you NEED to react to is "Hate?", the official live video, from their 10th Anniversary Tour finale in Yokohama this past November. This song is as hard a rock banger that you have heard this year. These incredibly talented young Japanese females have come a long way since "Choose Me" was recorded. They are now a rock and roll force to be reacted to.

I've come across the greatest rock band in the world.
It's not a question of whether you like BAND-MAID or not, but I'm convinced that not listening to their music now would be the same as being born in the 60s or 70s and not listening to the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Guns N' Roses, or Nirvana.
I'm glad they existed in real time in this era.
Let me know your reaction to them next.

Thanks for the reaction and comments. They are FIRE!!!!! Arguably the best live rock band on the planet, you really need to see their live performances to get a full appreciation of what these ladies are truly capable of. Band-Maid doesn't fit neatly into a genre. Creating sounds that are familiar and yet uniquely their own, they are their own genre. Play, Freedom, Domination, Moratorium, Puzzle, Dice, Shambles, Blooming, Puzzle, No God, Manners, Black Hole, Influencer....the list goes on and on. No two songs sound alike and yet there is a distinctive quality that is undeniably Band-Maid in character. Now, if you want to get a better feel for their technical proficiencies look no further than From Now On (MV). It's one of several killer instrumentals that shouldn't be missed. Cheers!

Ok, this is the first part of a file I post in the comments of new reactors to the Ladies of Band-Maid. This is only part of a much larger file, so if you are interested in seeing the remainder, please leave a reply to this comment. I will follow up after the part of the file with some commentary off the top of my head.

Ok, that is the first part of the file, now for some commentary.
This song, "Choose Me" has a few different meanings depending on if you are a Native Japanese Speaker, or a Native English Speaker. From several Native Japanese Speakers I have been told this song is a woman demanding more of their partners time, attention, affection, or they would leave. From many, many, many Native English Speakers, this song is about a Codependent B-D-S-M adjacent relationship. Now you would ask yourself where is the disconnect between the two. It is in the English words chosen for the lyrics and their placement in the translation. I've read a couple discussion on both Reddit and Discord about the lyrics, and the "Adult" nature of the contents of the lyrics stands out the most to English speakers. Whether that was intentional or not by Miku, the lyricist, we will never know unless she tells us. However I will say, that in Japan, she is known as a poet for her lyrics and how they can have multiple meanings in both English and Japanese with how she uses metaphor. I will add part of a discussion log I had with a few other fans, from another of my files.

@greylocke100 I think Kobato explained her use of four-character idioms, Japanese idioms made with four kanji characters.
Many of them are unique to Japan but are also often derived from the classical literature of ancient China. They contain wisdom or life lessons where may reference old myths or folklore, or Buddhist ideas, or anything in the culture. In Japanese it is something like an abbreviation, the meaning can't necessarily be derived from their component words, (not even in Chinese). It's not an appropriate analogy, but it might feel like abbreviations for Latin epigrams.
@greylocke100 Sure, I'm glad if it helped you. BTW, there are also mere idioms, not wisdom or life lessons.
Maximum the Hormone's "予襲復讐 [Yoshū Fukushū]", which deals with bullying at school, is coined by them, literally "Preemptive attack Revenge", where it could be read as "Preemptive attack for revenge". "Yoshū Fukushū", however, is a four-character idiom that usually spells "予習復習", which simply means "Prepare and review".
The titles of Unseen World discs are simply translated as "Roots" for 1 and "Progress" for 2, respectively. However, the former [原点回帰/Geten Kaiki] is a four-character idiom meaning "Return to basics [the point of origin]", while the latter [現点進化/Genten Shinka] is a word coined by Kobato that is a variant of the former and may means something like "Evolution at the present point".
    @otobokegaijin6218
    3 minutes ago (edited)
Regarding the Japanese four-character expressions, they're in the "Shambles" lyrics too. 渾然一体 meaning disparate elements blended into a harmonious unity. Also 笑止千万, meaning something like "so funny can't stop laughing" but often in irony or pathos or bathos. The word "shambles" is a rendering of 混沌 (usually translated as "chaos"), an alternative form of that word is 渾沌, and 渾 is the first character of 渾然一体. In Chinese literature 混沌 appears as the name of a demigod, and demigods (if not that particular one) feature in "Kengan Ashura". These literary connections are not coincidences. You'll often find them in Miku's lyrics.
There are a few other instances of this sort of word-play in the "Shambles" lyrics. For example, there's a proverb from Chinese/Japanese literature that's not literally translated but means something like "What seems to be good can turn out to be bad, what seems bad can turn out to be good, sometimes the end of things isn't obvious at first." The proverb ends with the kanji character for "horse" 馬, and that character is in the full name of the protagonist Ashura in the anime. The "fierce tiger" in the lyrics is a direct reference to Saiki's favorite baseball team Hanshin Tigers and also to the Two Tigers of the anime.
So lyrically you cannot take what your initial impression is for face value. There is context you are missing.
Next, I've reached the point in your reaction where you talk about how the lyrics being in Japanese is throwing your enjoyment of the song. I would ask you to listen to the song while considering the lyrics to be just another instrument being used to convey the emotion of the song. The first few times you hear it, just let the rhythm and flow of the lyrics as the both contrast and flow with the backing instruments, take you on a musical journey in your imagination. The words being spoken aren't important, the tone, the inflection, the emotion underneath, THOSE are part of the singer's instrument, just let it roll over you and enjoy that. Then, start considering the lyrics, and what they have to say. I too many years ago, couldn't enjoy music unless I could understand the lyrics. Until I heard the Scorpions singing in German, which lead me to other groups singing in German, and Italian, and Russian, and now Japanese, Korean, Malaysian, Chinese, Siberian, Mongolian and many other languages. For the first few times I hear a new to me song, the words are just one of the instruments. If I can understand the language or not, doesn't matter. Do I enjoy the flow of the music? And does it take me somewhere in my head? If it does either of those, I can enjoy it.
And this song along with their song "Blooming" were used in the Netflix movie "Kate", and the Ladies themselves had cameo's in the film as themselves, performing this song.

Welcome Master Dr. Rock and Master Todd Bobby to the amazing world of Band-Maid. Like the reaction. Please continue rocking with the Maids, as their portfolio is deep and diverse. PO!🕊 🤘😆🤘
Let the Band-Maid family, most call ourselves Maidiacs, know what direction you want to explore. We are here willing to help, as we would like to help the Maids on their quest of World Domination. Their genre is Band-Maid, as they mix and match genres often in the same songs. Some suggestions:
"From Now On" OMV or "Onset" OLV are instrumentals which show you how proficient these ladies are.
"HATE?" OLV from their 10th Anniversary Finale at Yokohama Arena. This was song 27 of 33 that night in a 3hr and 40min concert. I was there and it was AWESOME!!! Make sure you turn on the CC as the lyrics are pretty brutal, but very entertaining. One of the few songs in their portfolio about a negative subject, yet surprisingly, they make it sound, upbeat and positive. Band-Maid doing Band-Maid thing.
"Manners" and "Black Hole" OLV from their online Okyu-ji (translate to "servings", what they call their live performances) two-for. "Manners' a bluesy/groove rock song. "Black Hole" a controlled chaos heart pounding masterpiece. Currently their highest bpm song at 220 bpm. This one has to be listened to many times as there is so much going on.
"Daydreaming" OMV a solid rock ballad, so you can hear the "softer" side of the Maids.
"Rinnie" OMV one of their heaviest songs.
"Freedom" OLV at the Line Cube Shibuya. Show how happy they are to perform with this earworm of a song. Watch the Gorilla (Akane) have some drums. Then follow that up with Mincho (Kanami, lead guitarist and main composer of the Maids) letting her PRS do some singing.
"Endless Story" OLV also from their 10th Anniversary finale. A great stadium rock anthem song. This was their final song of the evening. Again make sure the CC is on. And you will see why we love the Maid. Saiki's (the Queen) conveyance of the band's gratitude to the fans is heartwarming. And for this show, they added an extra verse to celebrate this show ending with the fans in mind.😍
And this is just a small sample of what awaits you on your journey into the Pigeon-hole.

Welcome, DocRock & T-Bob. You are embarking on (along with many others - over 200 million YT views plus over 40 million reactor plays!) an awesome, progressive, hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (130+ songs), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom.
Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular!
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: czcams.com/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/video.html Their songs from albums Unleash, Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Hate?, Shambles, Influencer, Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on.
But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, Bestie, About Us, Memorable, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, At The Drop Of A Hat, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or progressive like No God, Giovanni, and Black Hole… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like From Now On, Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts… or their many acoustic versions like Catharsis and Sayonakidori... and last but not least, their Anime hits (AniMaid) like Sense, Glory and Unleash!!!!! (from their own Anime MV (series?)): czcams.com/video/7LB_EPS48HE/video.html)
And many songs are represented with over 50 well produced music videos. czcams.com/users/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYUJI concerts:
 2023 Yokohama 10th Year Anniversary Concert “Endless Story” czcams.com/video/Za1y-RRVd70/video.html
     ONLINE OKYU-JI (Feb. 11, 2021) “No God” czcams.com/video/nAdWnIRjGak/video.html

     ZEPP 2018 “Real Existence” czcams.com/video/-qQnKILR5u0/video.html
 Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and other full concerts are on bandmaidprime.tokyo, bili, and official Band-Maid’s DVD/BD/CD.
And some of the better quality fan videos are excellent. Here’s two of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at an intimate venue:
 Shot by Pat McKee from their 2023 US tour concert in Detroit: czcams.com/video/DgxU-MVjta0/video.html
     See the Maids 2023 Rockville Festival’s short-set perfection performance: czcams.com/video/vjZkNeoGmhc/video.html
If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, live streams, CD, DVD/BD & merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Don’t Let Me Down, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.

    Band-Maid Members:
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “StarQueen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 30 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 32 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 32 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 33 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 31 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!
Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans.
    [BAND-MAID NEWS]
 BAND-MAID PRIME - Special Video Distribution Website. Along with nearly 50 great play-through’s by each member, concerts and skits, Band-Maid management / label(s) have included the Acoustic Christmas 2021, ZEPP 2018 and Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 concerts! Fans can now see more than 50 great live performances with awesome audio, etc. like Fate, I Can't Live Without You and the great MISA / Kanami exchange in Don't You Tell Me. Those concerts are two of the best produced & performed concerts ever recorded, IMO. bandmaidprime.tokyo
 The Maids SOLD OUT 2023 US & Mexico tour wrapped up and was a fantastic success. And so many great live fancams to watch! Their playing and antics were as fresh and fun to experience from first show to last. BRAVO Band-Maid!!!!! Their 10th Anniversary Tour concluded at Japan’s 17,000 seat Yokohama Arena on Nov. 26, 2023 and in Hong Kong Dec. 21! We've really lost musicians who can play great guitar solos that fit the songs. There are a lot of technicians out there, though. All of them are just unimpressive, these days. But Kanami, she can play fast, but she doesn't show it too much, she just goes for the perfection of the song. True genius.

Need to do a different song
    - “Hate?” - OLV
The Maids do every type of rock - this is on the lighter side - and just a tiny taste of their awesomeness.
And You’ll enjoy seeing them Live - it’s a complete sensory experience way beyond a music video.
Truly, need to see them LIVE!!
Take care and rock on! 🤘🏼🔥🎸🥁🎤🙌🏼😎✌🏼

This is one of a handful of their most commercial sounding songs, and dig into their catalogue and you'll soon find out that they are way more than that. They can't be categorised. You have to listen to at least 10 songs from different era of Band-Maid to form any sort of judgement.
The band have - this and that kind of vibe / sound
    No,
This particular song has...is the right words to use.
Thank you for checking them out, so what's next?😂

If you want to see what they can do technically, then I would suggest one of their instrumental tracks like "from now on". For more memorable vocals maybe try "Daydreaming" or "influencer". If you like '80s music you'll probably like "REAL EXISTENCE" or "the non-fiction days" or "Thrill" or "Shake That!!" Thanks for checking them out.

Band Maid is an amazing band. They have soooo many different songs. And their official live performances is among the best out there.
    Some suggestions:
Dice, Play, Rinne, From Now on.
    Hate(live), Morratorium(live), Onset(live)
They actually have subtitles for a lot of their newer stuff👍

Band Maid is better appreciated live than in the MV's. Please check out their song "Hate? (Official Live Video)". If you really want to watch another MV, check out the instrumental song "From Now On (Official Music Video)".

Band-Maid is it's own genre. They mix Rock/Hard Rock/Jazz/Pop/PunkMetal/Thrash Metal and sometimes all in one song. Band-Maid always have great hooks. Kanami Tono is the main song writer and a Paul Reed Smith sponsored guitarist and one of the best out there. Check out "Domination" and HATE? official LIVE. They LOVE their instrumentals too so be sure to check out "From Now On" official music video, this song showcases their talents as world class musicians. Cheers!

Did you turn on CC? They put English lyrics there.
KANAMI writes solos perfectly crafted to suit the song. Her focus is on melody and emotion, not showing off. They have MISA on lead bass to take care of that.
This is an old song, one of the first they wrote themselves. As you listen to more , you will see they come in a variety of styles, all with an essential “BAND-MAID” sound.
For something less hard, a bit slower, and more simple (i.e., accessible to casual listeners), listen to their recent collaboration with MIKE EINZIGER of INCUBUS. The song is BESTIE. The lyrics are 100% English. And the video is beautiful. (But the solo is simple.)

Welcome to the fandom! I suggest these BM songs: Thrill, Dice, Manners, Bubble, No God (live) & Puzzle (live)
I'd also suggest The Warning! Maybe start with Money, Sick, Automatic Sun, Enter Sandman (with Alessia Cara), Evolve (live VMAs), or Dust To Dust (live Teatro)

I am always so embarrassed when I hear Americans listen to something they are not familiar with and come across with such a egotistical
    tone.

    • @thedrrocktoddbobbyshow
      @thedrrocktoddbobbyshow  Před měsícem +6

Everything you said there is so true and yet so wrong at the same time! lol I love that our characters (egotistical and American...we're not....well at least not American) get some of these kind of responses because they are meant to! While our feelings on the songs are genuine we like to approach this from a different angle to make it fun and entertaining and not the same ol' thing you see with every other channel. We all like and dislike different things....and that's ok. It would be boring if well liked the same thing...and at the same time no one is wrong....your favourite song or genre is yours to love just as is mine to me. Thanks for tuning in and hope to hear more from you in the future! - Doc
