    These no-nonsense tips seem common sense, but it's amazing how many videos I watch with people camping with dogs where the pup has no (or minimal) gear. The human will have layers of clothing and raincoats and boots hats special food etc. while the doggo gets soaked and is expected to just be okay. This gives me hope though. It's thanks to people like Matthew Posa and NutnFancy that I know anything about really camping with dogs!! #cheers

  • @SnowySpiritRuby
    @SnowySpiritRuby Před 5 lety +46

    Never let your dog wander around the campground, no matter how friendly it might be - it's extremely rude to everyone else in the campground; also, some people really don't like dogs, and some people are afraid of them; worst case scenario, someone might even complain about your dog so bitterly to the rangers that they tell you to leave. Keep the dog out of others' sites and under your control while in the campground - anything less is extremely rude and irresponsible.

    My dog is going to be 12 next month and this is what I want to do is take her on camping trips she loves the outdoors and has never needed a leash she's half heeler and collie so shes always been smart and loyal..my work schedule is very tight and hardly have any time to take her for her walks etc. But from here on out I'm getting a tent and takin fishin gear and we're gonna do some campin. She's gonna love it it's gonna be a lot of fun catchin some fish and hangin out with my best friend by the camp fire and grilling up some good food. In Texas camping is better when the temperature is colder. No mosquitoes to deal with and don't need ac unit just a few thick blankets, pillows and tent. Cell phone on off

      @SnowySpiritRuby Před 5 lety +2

      The dog is wearing a Gentle Leader - it's a training tool, and if adjusted correctly, the dog can still open its mouth all the way. It's exactly like a halter on a horse - loose enough to let the horse eat and open its mouth all the way, but it provides a means of effective communication, and therefore control/direction.

    When I take Noodles (100lb Lab mix) camping he eats what I eat. I whole-heartedly disagree that your pet dogs must eat "dog food" and that people food is bad for them. Some things that people eat are bad but a majority of it is not harmful. My decision to feed my dogs both people food and dog food is based on the quality of life over quantity of life. I mean, on average a dog will live only about 14 years. I believe in cramming as many happy life experiencing moments for my dogs that I can in only fourteen years. Eating people food seems to be about the best thing in the world from my dog's point of view.

    • @SnowySpiritRuby
      @SnowySpiritRuby Před 5 lety +2

      Some breeds of dogs have short or single coats - a good portion of the double coated dog breeds were bred as retrievers and/or to work in very cold climates, so many can often get by without an additional coat except in really cold conditions. Other breeds originated in much warmer or desert climates, and therefore don't have thick heavy coats designed for cold weather - if taking one of those dogs camping, it might be a good idea to bring a coat for them. HOWEVER, it's up to each owner to decide whether or not to bring a coat for their dog: they will know whether or not their dog gets cold easily, and they will make their own decision based on that. My best friend has a lab/collie mix, and she doesn't really get cold, even in winters here in the Rockies, but another friend of mine has a chihuahua that gets very cold very easily, and so he wears a sweater or jacket a lot of the time; one dog is breeds that were developed to be able to deal with cold wet weather and cold sea water, and the other one is a breed developed to be able to deal with the heat in the hot climate of Mexico - do the math.
      Walking/running on rough terrain for long periods can also damage their pads/make them sore, so it's for protection, in this case from the type of surface, rather than the temperature of the surface. Many dog owners will also have their dog(s) wear boots in the winter to keep the salt on the roads etc. from getting into the dog's paws and/or to give the dogs traction on ice.

      It can be 80+ degrees during the day but still get below freezing at night in the desert and the mountains, so yes, it IS possible to get hypothermia in the middle of the summer. I'm a certified Wilderness First Responder, and if anything happens and the person (it probably applies to dogs, too, particularly those without double coats) is unable to move on their own, hypothermia is a very real anticipated problem in all but the very warmest weather, no matter where you are.

Ain't need for a leash, just let them be dogs and explore with freedom. Of course always bring a leash just in case. I also think making them carry their backpacks are useless. All U need is a leash and some water on ya and a first aid kit for you and you buddy. Like I said, just let them follow you freely. It's not fun for them when you gotta hold the lead tight. And at night just let him sleep in the tent with you. Maybe not next to u, but like at your feet or something. Trust me, i love dogs and owned one, I know. If you're going to be going anywhere that the dog might encounter any wildlife that might do anything other than just run/fly away (birds, squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, etc.), keeping them on a leash/close by is extremely important: porcupines, skunks, raccoons, bears, mountain lions, rattle snakes, wolves, etc. are all things that can be very real hazards for your dog (which ones are applicable depends on where you're going camping) and are *_NOT_* to be trifled with.
