- The day before his high school graduation in June of 2016, Jake Javier dove into a pool at a friend's house and broke his neck, becoming instantly paralyzed from the chest down.
During his recovery and physical therapy, Jake had two goals. Become as independent as possible and attend Cal Poly.
In the fall of 2017, he started his Cal Poly journey and is working to not only be successful in school, but continue to be as independent as possible.

You are just so fabulous, Jake! I'm impressed and inspired. You have so much Light and you are letting it shine!
What an amazing young man, so handsome and a great son, definitely a leader. Best wishes to him.
Jake, as a disabled person myself, I really appreciate your attitude. I suffered a devastating water skiing injury right before my senior year of high school. I was told I may lose my leg and would be lucky if I ever walked again. Life was difficult, but being a Christian really helped, and having a wonderful family. Eventually I went to Cal Poly as well, and graduated way back in 1982. After a career in Silicon Valley, I am back down on the Central Coast, because it grows on you! Today, being a lot older and dealing with chronic neurological pain today as a result of that initial injury over 40 years ago, I grumble a little bit about the sufffering. Listening to your story, you remind me how I used to handle the challenges and I pledge to you as a fellow fighter, that I will try to "grumble" less, and remember how lucky we both are to have gained a different perspective through our injuries. I wish you the best in your adventure at Cal Poly, I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I did! Keep that sense of humor, it serves you so well!
🙏

"I wouldn't change what happened to me because then I wouldn't have this chance, in front of all of you, to embrace more people than I ever could have with two arms." - Bethany Hamilton. Jake, you have touched more lives than you could imagine with your story. - A fellow Norcal SCI.
