      Im 21 and got my career started in a diesel shop over a year ago. I went to a local community college and got a certificate in diesel. I also work with a guy my age who started not long before me and came out of uti. I have to say we both came into our jobs with about equal knowledge and skills (which isn't much) and we've both progressed a lot during our time solely based off becoming familiar with our trucks and equipment (the stuff we work on belongs to our fleet). To me, it seems like you'll learn good things at a bigger trade school but the loans will really get you. Me and this other guy both started as temporary helpers and are now both full time mechanics making similar pay doing basically the same job with basically the same skills, only now he has to start paying off his loans while I paid about 1500 in cash for my whole program. I dont wanna talk bad about big trade schools but it seems to me like if youre smart and you're willing to put in the work, you'll be perfectly fine going the community college route. Either way you go, you're most likely gonna find your first job through the school if your teachers like you. And never think that any school is going to hand you a job, no matter how much you pay to go. You're going to have to work hard and stand out in your class in order to prove you're the best for any potential job. Show up to class every day, your teachers will notice and that's the biggest thing companies are looking for when they hire new or young mechanics.

    Good video, there are a lot of diesel engine companies out there. Yes there's Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Perkins. Those are the more popular ones. There's also Alco, Fairbanks, EMD (Which Caterpillar owns now), Rolls Royce, Wartsilla, and a large host of others. You also have truck, rail, marine, farm, construction equipment, power generation. Depending on what you want to work on. This trade can open doors for them. It's a great way to make a good life. Service techs aways make more than one that stays in the shop.

    I started working on a farm, then I started driving jockey truck, then my wife and I took over our family business. I'm not certified in anything, but I can do most things, with the exception of anything related to diagnosing computer related problems. Your channel was a great reference when I adjusted my overhead on my converted MBN c-15. I find that tools are my biggest problem. If I don't have the proper tools, I call a guy like you. I did about 75% of the work in rebuilding an E7 Mack motor. Aside from machine shop work I did everything, and I have no formal education. Just roll up your sleeves and don't be afraid of mistakes, the best techs make mistakes.

    I got started like this. Business man goes "like your brain, here start this trucking company with these old trucks". I said okay and punished my brain learning all the FMCSA and DOT law. I was blessed with a multi-functional mindset so with these old trucks I entertained my ability to read, comprehend, and apply all that I read into the reality of fixing these trucks. Fast-forward past piles of old truck repairs, my 2006 Columbia came in needing an engine rebuild. So, I bought lots of special tools, got the rebuild manual and two weeks later I rebuilt my first every diesel engine which was a 14L Series 60 Detroit. Took me too weeks due to learning curves and machine work. Fast forward again, CAT C15, 3406E, Cummins N14, Kubota V1902, Kubota D950, and so on. I essentially became proficient and reading and applying what I read. Also I now own a whole volume of special tools.
    In short I don't know how to "can't", I just do it, I really don't care of I've done it before. I can read specs and apply specs, any engine, transmission, gear set, etc. Anything. I don't care how big or small or who makes it, I can rebuild it and fix it to spec. I don't suspect I am going to work towards certifications because I hate being limited and it's not my primary objective. I worked all the "job" I want to work, now onto living and owning.

      Adept Ape I had a question I would like to hear your opinion on this (I don't mean to make this a bitching complaint, just like your opinion on this). Alright I recently Graduated Trade School as a Diesel Technician and Received my Associates Degree in Diesel Technology. Here's the Pickle in the jar, I ve been working at a Ford Dealership for almost a year now, working as a Lube Technician . And so now I've now have a Degree, I thought i'd asked my boss about a Promotion into the Mechanic Shop or at least a Raise, because here's the deal, I work with majority of Fresh Straight out of High School Kids with No Experience working on vehicles, No Specialized Ford Training, No Education in the Auto/Diesel field, they're quite lazy but I am always constantly trying to motivate them to work . But They are receiving much higher pay than what I am making. I make 8.50 hourly working 8-10 hours a day and the other Lube Techs (High School Kids) are making from 10-13 dollars an hour. I ve been there longer than them,Always at work and on time, I volunteer to stay overtime when We're shortage on Lube Techs, always do what I am told, And I teach these Boys how to do stuff when they need help , because Idk..i m just that type of person to help anybody that needs it. But anyways I've asked my boss those Opinions I had in mind and showed him my degree and some specialized training certification I ve received while I ve been in the Diesel program . He told me "Those will NOT get you a promotion into the main mechanic shop or a raise ..Ford does not accept those" "The only thing we accept for you to these those is too do Fords Online Training" ..??...and that's the part I do not understand??..A lot of those kids I work with never even did any of those online training courses to receive such higher pay that me. It just doesn't make sense to me why I've gone through all those years of Schooling and Training to be told I it won't get me anywhere ??..what do you think of that Adept Ape ..? Do you think that's fair at all to be getting payed the lowest when Knowledge plays a huge role in this field and you have it.
      Please Respond Buddy ... need your opinion on what to do... should I quit? Or stay and bug my boss about what I've asked him ?

    it would be good to have a volunteer diesel tech job just to stay busy in between jobs even.

      @AdeptApe  Před 7 lety +2

      +II THE FLASH II I know OTC makes a compression checker, but I don't think it works for Cat engines. Cat uses what they call Keystone rings that are supposed to make doing compression checks hard. I would hold off on the pressure gauges until you see what fittings you'll need. Cat uses Compucheck fittings on pretty much all your trucks, but you won't know which engines you'll be predominantly working on until you start. So I wouldn't worry about it until you start.

    I’ve been a trailer mechanic for about a 8 months now. I recently saw cat here has a lube technician available. Would it be worth it to switch over for this role? They also have a few shop tech positions open as well but those are 3 year + roles

Sorry 😐

      Some schools get discounts through the tool trucks like the community college I went to. Matco offered 50% off most tools except diagnostic tools or their boxes. But don't be a fool and think you need a 8k box to work. Just about every person I have ever talked to regretted buying most their tools off a truck. Save money get a cheaper box even a US General Harbor Freight box will suffice and use the money you would save wasting it on that fancy box on tools that you will need. Boxes only need to roll and hold things that's it better off using a tool cart most the time anyhow

Honestly, i dont why I got hired cuz i told the hiring mg that what I did in the army is very minimal, mostly fluids and changing parts, inspection and changing tires. But that I told him that what I lack in knowledge makes up for effort and work ethic and my williness to learn. Now i am scared that I might get fired because i barely know anything.

    operating engineers probably has the best apprenticeship program for operators, mechanics, service trucks, or survey work plus the pay is way good, it's kind of reflective to inflation, and the cost/profits the construction projects they'll be on. like surveyors, you can take a number of courses and even work for public companies like city and county or state level and the amount of experience you'll acquire isn't going to be 1/2 as much as you get on private contracted labor union signatory projects, it's just the way it is. people complain of union dues when it's nothing compared to wages, the loyalty of members and the hall, and the education that'll be far ahead of the non union trained/experienced workers. whatever you do, try to stay away from non union rock plants, and above all "right to work states" like Oregon, moving dirt, asphalt, or pipeline operators are minimum wage jobs, you can tell by the type of product they produce and the snails pace amount of production. can't learn anything except the owners are taking all your wages so the off season they can hibernate, not worry about filling the calendar up.
