    A note about putting rocks in the oven: if they have any moisture in them, there is a risk they may explode. Sometimes even a crack puts them at risk.

    • @JaniceLHz
      @JaniceLHz Před 3 lety +37

      Thank you for warning people.
      According to a terrific thread starting at
      @Sewciopath's comment, explosion risk is higher if the rock was soaked in water (such as if you find it in a river or puddle) and if you use a medium or high heat (200F should be plenty to melt the crayon).

      Yeah I thought it might be dangerous if kids went and collected their own rocks at the river. I've had river rocks explode in campfires before.

      The more that are reported, the more 5 Minute Crap puts up. They're a content farm, and they're just oNe of THOUSANDS. Many of those are owned by the same handful of parent companies using various shall corps. It's kind of impossible for YT to stop them all. YT can't even use reasonable standards when it comes to COPPA enforcement, and 5 Minute violates that about a hundred times per day.

    Instead of the thin baking sheet, if you use a thick ceramic pan, it will hold the heat longer. Better yet, use a hot plate. The dripped color in the last one, this effect is easy if you skip the crayon and just use colored candles. Light the candle, let it melt a bit, tip it onto its side, and pour off the melted wax.

    Jackie! If you liked the melting of the wax on the rocks, there is a painting technique called Encaustics I'm pretty sure that's how it's spelled in English! Basically you use a small iron and other hot tools and use wax as paint! I went to a class because it can be a tad expensive to get all the materials if you just want to try it out, but you can get some really neat effects and cool art out of it! Thought I'd let you know about it just in case, I loved making art pieces that way :)

    There is an ancient painting technique called "encaustic painting." It's been around for a few thousand years (the Egyptians used it to paint their mummies and other art works), long before oil paints were a thing. It's basically pigment mixed into molten beeswax. Heated metal tools were then used to "paint" the liquid wax onto whatever surface was at hand. By melting crayons and applying them as you've done here, you're basically practicing a simple form of encaustic painting😁
    If you have a glue pot (a small electric pot meant for use with hot glue), you can mix crayons and clear glue to make colored glue. If you can figure out a way to melt the glue and crayon together, you may not need a glue pot (I use a heat gun on a ceramic plate to melt a glob of glue then use a crayon to stir the color in. If it gets stiff you just hit it with the heat gun again).
    You should be able to clean/save you glue gun after crayons just by putting glue sticks through it until the glue comes out clear.
    Crayons melt at substantially less than the boiling point of water. You probably got that yellow sandpaper "ghost" by overheating the sandpaper and transferring some of the sandpaper's red color. Your iron should be on the lowest or medium low setting when working with crayons. Also, I believe that the sandpaper transfer method gives a washable garment (cold water, of course!). You could also topcoat the crayon print with clear fabric paint to give a more durable print.
    You'd probably get a similar result by heating rocks with a heat gun rather than baking them in an oven. You just heat the surface of the rock for a minute or two before applying crayons. The neat thing about this technique us that once one side is completely cooled, you can just flip the rock over, heat that side, and color it. And if you'd rather have a glossy finish, a spray with clear gloss acrylic should do the job😁
    I know this vid was meant to debunk 5-Minute Crafts (which is indeed mostly carp), but some of these ideas can work with the right tweaks, tools and materials.

    ARTZOOKA IDEA. You can mix crayon shavings in with regular school glue, white works best, stir & it'll color the glue & leave a thick chunky texture behind. You can make several colors & use a stencil picture to scoop the colors on in small amounts with a popsicle stick & make a cool textured pictures. You can also take a thick black string dipped in glue & place it around the edge of your picture for a cool outline.

    Instead of doing it on a shirt do you could do it on a blank canvas! Which you can also get at the dollar store. I think that the cheaper crayons work better because they're not as high quality of a crayon, if that makes sense LOL! Like rose art , even though it's pretty much the same price, just seems to melt faster for me!

    Here's a real Crayola hack hehe: You can use Crayola markers like watercolors! All you need are: a box of Crayola markers, a paint brush, a tin lid or plastic mixing try and water~ You can draw, with the markers, on the plastic or tin tray, and mix the colors together with the water/brush! You can mix any colors you want and dilute them to make them super light with the water~ I use them a lot haha. This works for any waterbased marker though.
    Okay, now I'm gonna watch the video. I just like the marker/water trick when coloring with them vrhkbgsjerkn ILY Jackie!
