Applying Fabric with Running Stitch

  • For the second week of my Stitch Journal I was really inspired by the colours in my old paint cloths. By applying the fabric pieces to your base cloth with running stitches it's possible to achieve beautiful results. So I've just torn the cloth up so I can apply it to my base.
Use other pieces you might have around instead...little precious bits of lace, vintage fabrics or just some pretty scraps left over from one thing or another. This will just let you start and think about how the cloth and stitching can come together to create a pleasing whole.

Thank you Mary. Letting go of 'perfection' was a great lesson for me years ago. I realised I enjoyed myself more and accomplished more once I wasn't worrying about all the bits I thought were wrong. Of course.. there are times when things need to be just so. But in general just creating more, means more practice, and then you improve all the time.☺️

I can’t start it just yet as I’ve been crocheting a baby blanket…… a sturdy wee thing, suitable for a car seat or a buggy. Each square has got an animal that has been crocheted and will be appliquéd on by me. My daughter is coming here tomorrow to help in all the placing of squares and livestock. Two heads will be better than one……. I’ve been wrangling these farmyard critters for ‘toooooooooo’ long and am getting a bit *💥😴☠️* of it!!!! I can’t wait for this WIP to become a FO😝 . Thank you for doing this project. My husband gave me some little squares of cotton he washes his brushes off with. What a great idea to showcase them! They look wonderful placed together on the denim. Thanks for sharing another wonderful idea. Your work is always beautiful to watch.

I love the way your mind works - while working on one project your brain thinks of another possibility you can create! I would enjoy seeing how you are putting your "tree" together, even if only a slight explanation is given. Really nice video today as always. Thank you

Inspiring video (as always!). I didn't have any painty cloths but wanted my piece to be arty. I finally cut off 6 buttonholes, in squares, from a scrapped patterned blouse. Each piece has a different area of pattern around the opening. I'm very pleased with the outcome, something I would never have thought of doing before. Thankyou.

Hi Marion, I loved this video. The colours on your paint cloth are beautiful. I would have loved that design as wall art. I find you so interesting to listen too and very talented in everything you do. I don't usually like to mix sewing and painting or sewing and glueing, just something I can't normally get myself to do, BUT you have inspired me to have ago. I think I will paint some splodges on a piece of old sheeting and have ago. Many, many thanks for your lovely videos, you are a tonic, Diane xxx

Thank you Marion for the video. That is so effective, who would think that your paint cloth could be so artistic. I watercolour so rinse mine out (just to take the bulk of paint off) then use again so they are quite pastel looking, but,I am looking at them in a new light. It's funny I am concentrating on finishing a knitted jumper and felt a little out of sorts yesterday. I realised on watching your video I had stitch envy ,no stitching for 3 days and withdrawal was real.😂😂

I promised myself do do more watercolour this year. I hadn't had my paints out for ages. I did a portrait for a Christmas present and it really made me want to carry on painting some more. So far I've done a tiny bit every day as I'm painting the sky on my phenology wheel.

I learnt new saying today 'walk the tread" One simple stitch, that can do so much. Giving old textiles a new life is a wonderful thing, I'm always checking out op shops for old linens. Thank you for sharing your world of stitching with us.
