Interesting take
It's amazing how a minimal sketch like this can portray a recognizable face. When my son was 4 he drew a picture of a family friend. I'm sure it was completely chance, but it actually LOOKED like her, even though it was just an outline of the face with eyes, nose, and mouth.
Mediocre at best and that's being generous on a good day.
The fact that he made it look so easy

As an artist: To draw a face that well without even sketches, let alone inking on the first go takes years of practice.
That is what I am saying. line work masters over realism.
I remember doing this as a kid. Think I did fine and made some portraits in grade school that people were pretty satisfied with.

You do have a point, but it’s a highly contended point. Some of my colleagues have studied this exact topic at phd level. I would say that it’s the other way around, personally. You believe it’s practice… I have seen students practice harder than anyone, guided by very good resources, and they have not improved. They tend to lean towards concepts at this point. One of my good friends is an artist, he has never been formally trained and he is lazy as hell. He just has the ability to do this.

@@jimbothesailor4217 train as hard as you want at all things art except what you want to be good at.
If you want smooth lines, you have to start drawing smooth lines, regardless of how bad it fucks up your results.
I don't think it's talent, it's just a way of thinking about how to learn a skill. Your muscle movements are habitual, every moment you spend drawing messy, is a moment you're conditioning yourself it's okay not to be smooth and clean. Most people don't have the discipline to retrain their entire skillset.
@@TheInfectous I agree that deliberate practice is crucial for skill improvement, but talent also plays a significant role in the extent to which one can improve. Talent refers to a natural aptitude towards a particular skill or ability, and individuals with talent may find it easier to develop certain skills than others. Additionally, talent is often accompanied by passion and dedication, which can lead to more focused and deliberate practice. However, with dedicated practice and perseverance, individuals without natural talent can still achieve similar levels of proficiency.
