  • Ep. 200 1/2 BONUS: DEMO DAY WITH MY SMALTI OWL!
Hey Everyone! Welcome to the first ever Cobb Parks Spring Arts Festival!
I've been asked to set up a demonstration booth showing how I make mosaics.
0:36 I show my booth set up. I have one table to the side where I am selling mosaics and another table set up to do my demonstration.
1:00 I am using black tinted thinset as my adhesive. It's in a plastic baggy with the corner snipped off.
1:10 I start with the beak. I use just a few bigger pieces that are faceted. Then I decide to tackle the right side of the face, with the feathers near the beak. My reference photo shows me which direction they are growing in.
2:43 Now the feathers change direction and move away from the beak across the face.
Note: I find it is easiest to cut a number of pieces and have them ready. Then I spread thinset over a little area and put the pieces in. That way my work time doesn't stretch out and the thinset doesn't have time to skin over.
3:54 Now the feathers are growing down again and they are not as fine. So I am using bigger smalti pieces for these lower feathers.
Every once in a while I stop working and show visitors how I cut stained glass with my stained glass tools. Then I explain the difference between stained glass and smalti and demonstrate the hammer and hardie.
4:15 Now I'm working on the side of the head, where the feathers a bit lighter and then dark again.
4:43 That is as far as I am able to get after about three hours. I then have one last look at my booth set up.
After I pack up and load my car, I walked around and looked at the local vendors.
That's Putting It Together, Ep. 200 1/2: BONUS!
Blast off everyone! See you next time!

Beautiful. I’m curious as to how fast your bag of thin set dried. Looked like a warm sunny day so I’d guess quickly. Thanks for sharing.

The thinset in my bag was good to use the whole time. Once I spread it, it seemed similar to the normal worktime in my studio. Temperature was about 68 and I was working in the shade.

@@mazzonimosaics8222 That’s so interesting. I’ve avoided outdoor work out of concern for faster dry out times. Thanks so much for the info.

Love the owl! Just wondering how you determine when to go bigger with your pieces?

Good question! Mostly just from looking at the reference photo. The feathers are so tight and small on the head and then they get bigger on the body.
