Lucky “Friday 13th” 7827 Lydham Manor makes an Awesome Start at Greenway

  • I often travel many miles in the pursuit of the best steam action that the mainline can provide, but sometimes equally impressive action can be obtained right in my own backyard on the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway. 7827 Lydham Manor, built in 1950 (a good year!!) at Swindon but under the banner of the still relatively new British Railways will see it’s boiler ticket expire this year and so it seems very appropriate to get a little taste of what she is capable of (apart from rescuing A4’s!) before she disappears for overhaul. The clip captures a scene which depends on four pieces of luck and being Friday 13th I was maybe being a little optimistic! First we need 7827 to be the rostered engine, then we need her to be “smokebox forward” facing Paignton, then we need nice weather with the sun in the right direction. Finally, and most importantly, we need someone travelling from Kingswear to request the train to stop at Greenway Halt. All this accomplished, the scene is set for one of the most impressive regular standing starts one can see on U.K. railways as the diminutive “Manor” lifts 325 tons through reverse curves on a 1 in 75 incline without the slightest fuss, a testament to the amazing designs of Messrs. Churchward & Collett of the G.W.R. Wonderful as the countryside is at this time of the year, once you have seen the clip, try it again but after the whistle, switch the screen off and enjoy it sound only with the volume right up!

      Hi Robert and many thanks for your comment. You were lucky to see the 78xx pulling more than the usual seven, The most I have seen her pull is 10 in damp weather and she made it to Churston without a slip. Best regards, Alan

      Hi Alan I have lost track as to when 60103 is in Taunton this weekend,could you advise what time the beast is due in.Thanks

    • @Steamclips
      @Steamclips  Před 8 lety

      Hi Tony: timings for 60103 are not being released prior to start due to "risk of trespass", further bad news is that due to engineering works near Bristol, the tour is now bound for Salisbury not Bishops Lydeard. Regards, Alan

    Hi Alan; Just come across this and the sound was phenomenal. My neighbour just knocked on the door to see if I was OK. Told him I always sound like that when I smoke a pipe. Thanks for a great clip and keep up the excellent work.

      I personally wouldn't say "Amen"; I do personally believe that that word is very sacred and prefer to use it in the context of spiritual matters.End of "Thought for the Day"!! But as to matters temporal (!) yes thanks again great video Manors have such wonderful exhausts but I'm told the Counties were even better...

    The Exhaust on GWR locos is due to no Kyle/Chap read KILL/JOY thats why they have such a good bark under load

    Who's a lucky Alan then?!!!! Well captured, it had me in mind of Ivo Peters films, out in country and the birds singing, you don't get that these days. Great sound but being a Southern man I just can't get my head round GWR locos. I'll now stand well back to receive the flak!!!

    Love the sound of a GWR or British Railways Standard from a standing start on a gradient! Many locomotives of many different railways are great machine's but for a standing start pull away I like the GWR best

      @@Steamclips well done capturing this performance. I've subscribed so that I get future notifications. I'd like to see 7819 in steam again on the SVR, my favourite locomotive growing up; she had a good turn of speed as well, to my mind outpacing her stablemate Bradley Manor. Unfortunately she was in the early black BR uniform so that's how I remember her. Overall I don't think that BR black suits the Manors! How do you feel as a cameraman?

    Really cracking footage Alan...most impressive bark as She pulled away there...If only our WSR 7828 (Odney Manor) had the same bark as 7827....It really is a cracking Manor....Best wishes....Steve.-:)

    • @Steamclips
      @Steamclips  Před 6 lety

      Hello Matt and thank you once more. This is a preserved line that forms the last 7 miles of the ex GWR branch line from Newton Abbot to Kingswear. The line is still Network Rail as far as Paignton and so ideal for visiting mainline excursions such as those running currently on Sundays. Kind regards, Alan
