  • Rory Feek joins me today to talk about why we think our current generation is the most depressed one that's ever lived and how we can slowly go about opting out of the systems, even without a detailed plan. We talk about how we can, one step at a time, become more autonomous and independent, while simultaneously investing more in the community.

Interesting conversation. I would concur with most of these points. Blooming where you're planted is a phrase that comes to mind. I have spent 35 years working with heavy horses and doing things the hard way on the farm, making do, building and repairing my equipment. Currently rebuilding sleighs, keeping forgotten trades alive, and logging in the wintertime. I do text on my 10 year old phone, and have a youtube channel, but have never been on facebook, instagram, twitter or anything. My desktop computer is 10 years old and getting tired. No desire to upgrade, my only vehicle is a 26 year old 1 ton truck, also tired, no desire to upgrade, just keep fixing and nursing it along so I can run my little business. I live and farm entirely on rented land, do not own an acre of anything. My 320 sq ft tiny home is more than enough space for me. I have opted out of the ratrace and have no desire to rejoin frenetic society gone mad.

To answer the question, what did we do before GPS?
I think most of us did what you did of writing down directions before leaving & then, when the road doesn't make sense in real time, we pull out a map. I grew up with a map in my lap & was taught to pay attention. Where am i in relation to places & things? Where is the sun? Where is North etc..?
All good & useful skills. It feels good to use these skills. It gives independence.
GPS has its place, but not needing it & having alternatives/skills to get where you are going & home agai safely, is even better.

I firmly believe that the answer to 'why' we are so depressed and suicidal and feel such meaninglessness, is down to attachment. We are wired for attachment, and yet we live in a world, a culture, that promotes competition rather than connection. We pathologize dependency and glorify autonomy. We are far from our tribal space in which we knew 100 people intimately and felt so attuned with our people, our family, even our significant other. A study from the 80s showed that people had two to three very close friends. Now, people have ONE, and that's usually their spouse. And yet we also have an epidemic rate of betrayal, affairs, and divorce. So we are left with no one but ourselves, and we are meant to be happy. Women know all to well the propaganda of fourth wave feminism, "love yourself first," "You don't need a man", "Why do you want to raise your own children?", etc. We need one another to thrive, it is biology, not pop pseudo science. Our very hearts regulate when we are close to our people. Our nervous systems calm down and only in connection are we creative and whole.

      ... their music...
      Their is possessive.
Their cat, their cat or their spoon. Needs an object, aka, a noun.
There is a geographic location. Park the car over there.
They're is a contraction of the two words they and are.
      Their,
      There,
      They're.
      4th-grade spelling words, lol.

I agree with you both so much! I grew up without all of this technology! Many days I get so stressed by the noise of my cell phone. The ringing and texting are such an invasion in my day! I feel pressured to be "polite" and to respond quickly. There are days when I long for the calm and quietness of my youth. I am sad for my children and grandchildren! They don't understand how much fun it was to sit on the porch with my grandmother and snap beans! To go to the neighbors, who were farmers and sit on their porch in the evenings and eat cold sliced cantaloupe until we could pop! Jill and Rory, I really appreciate yours videos! Thank you both for sharing your knowledge and lives with us. A fan in Tennessee.

I love this. My husband and I were just talking about a survey that I had ran across asking if you could live in any time at the age that you are now, when would it be? 87% chose the 1980’s. Why the 80’s? My husband pointed out that it was before the internet. We escaped the city and moved to rural SE Louisiana. We struggled with being able to get internet for months. I wished that it wasn’t needed. I realized then that we’ve been forced into “needing” the internet and we don’t like it. Why must we “need” the internet? We’ve started our homestead. We pray by the Grace of God that it comes together just like Rory is speaking about. God Bless you both.

Really enjoyed, really enjoy Rory as well. So much makes since. We are in such a fast pace life, kids addicted to TV. So correct that so many want to homestead but keep to themselves. Here? In our small town, when the bowling alley closed, the bars got super busy. It is so sad, the "family & friends8" is lost. Sunday family lunches are gone as well

Old fashioned is less about the tools and equipment, and more about the mind set. Evidently big screen TV's and laptops can still fit into "old fashioned", when thought of and used properly.

They can be used wisely...TV's and computers are an amazing thing to allow modern homesteaders the ability to learn the skills most of us weren't taught growing up. But what I feel like he's focusing on here is the cell phone. The idea that we can carry around a TV & computer in our pockets 24/7 with instant access to easy mindless entertainment is a hard lure for [some] people to break away from. Even the "good information". I just went through this morning and unsubscribed from SEVERAL homesteading CZcams channels because I've found that as I subscribe to one here, and one there, they add up. Then I feel overwhelmed because I'm not able to watch all of the videos on my subscription page. This podcast was a great reminder (for me) to not let all the "noise" to get in the way so much.

Spiritual songs nurture the soul and therefore are NOT to be considered “entertainment.” Feeding the soul aligns one’s heart and mind with what is good, pure and kind therefore motivating an individual toward pouring positivity into their community. What is more to be valued?

Religion ?would that 4th ?We have been slowly opting out of the traditional religious systems my husband and I grew up in and served in as adults ...just not buying into the corporation ran feel of church anymore. Here in appalachia there are nastalgic little white churchs scattered about the country side ...and I have noticed when people speak of those old churchs and simple church services ...it transports them back to a happy place . I realized they appeal of old fashioned church is... they just came to church .worshipped. left . Very unlike modern church services where pastors are basicly CEO's ,managing worker bees that come to church and work work work in allll the classes and planning the next big event. At peoples core...they dont want all that in a church ...they get entertained all week ...they miss little old white churches because they where able to enjoy the simplicity .

I think this is SO true. I love my church . I love the people in my church. But there is a beauty in simplicity of just going to church to receive more of God's word and doing that with other believers. Then leaving... and during the week reading your Bible and educating yourself and your children and learning more of His word. Church has become exhausting in some circumstances which it never should be.
