  • I hope this how to video helps you learn how I model 3d scales for my creature models! I've always been a bit put off my 3d scale brushes, and after experimenting a bit I figured out that this method works pretty well! It is time consuming, but the finished product is worth it in my opinion. Id you'd like to see me make any other tutorial videos for anything let me know in the comments!

    Some decent looking plates.
    A point I would add is to consider the direction of the scales on a model. Since scales overlap, so I wouldn't really go for a crease between them, but rather something more stepped shaped. But regardless, the results you have achieved are quite nice.
    Would be nice if Blender could generate basic scales similarly to how it can generate hair. Since it really isn't hard to do.

    Even though it's a year old video, this was SO helpful, I love it. Thank you!

    Because you are using EEVEE to visualize your texture when painting the scale mask you can insert a color ramp node after your texture and adjust up the black level there. That way the mask can be true black for easy processing and the shading is still visible.

    nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, I have done that enogh to realize time is the most valuable thing we have. I mean its good for detailing areas. But You should try geometry nodes. I would discuss this further if you are open. (houdini for scales is good too)

      I would love to hear more about geometry nodes for scales!! i have not taken the dive into them yet, but i very much want to because i am certain there are better ways to do scales than what i have been doing lol

    Dynotopo isn't working for you because you have it set to subdivide/collapse. If you set it to just subdivide it won't collapse the geometry when you try to pinch.

    Do you still have to retopology the scales?

    • @Haukett
      @Haukett  Před rokem +1

      you do still need to do a lowpoly model to bake the scale normal map onto, but i did not retopo each scale individually. I have learned a lot since this video tho, and plan to make more tutorials about this!
