  • Starting in chapter 12, David Guzik continues in his teaching series on the book of Hebrews. In this message we learn how to apply the demonstrations of enduring faith we learned about in Hebrews 11.
Here is a link to David Guzik's commentary on Hebrews 12: enduringword.c...

How was joy set before Jesus to endure the cross?
I'm persuaded today that after hearing the assurance of God at both his baptism after coming up out of the water and then later on when being transfigured before his three disciples the joy was set before Jesus to endure the cross.
As a witness, the uncanny ability for Jesus to adhere to the law of God and to refrain from knowing sin is not why God was well pleased with the man, Jesus of Nazareth. Yahweh is well pleased with those who fear God, and hope in his mercy.
    Psalms 41:10-12
NSB(i) 10 Be gracious to me and raise me up, O Jehovah, that I may repay them. 11 By this I know that you are pleased with me, because my enemy does not shout in triumph over me. 12 You uphold me in my integrity. You set me in your presence forever.

      Psalms 147:10-11
KJV(i) 10 He delighteth not in the strength of the horse: he taketh not pleasure in the legs of a man. 11 The LORD taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy.
We don’t hear the announcement of God being well pleased with Jesus at the nativity. We don’t hear this announcement when Jesus performs any miracle or rebukes a Pharisee or chief priest. This announcement is only made in conjunction with the resurrection of Christ. The faith of Jesus is the righteousness of God apart from law. (See Rom3:21,22) Who also cried out to the one who could save him from death and was heard because of his fear of God. (Heb5:7)
      Matthew 17:1-5
KJV(i) 1 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, 2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. 3 And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. 4 Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. 5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

Knowing beyond any shadow of doubt that his Father was well pleased with him could only be attained by God raising him from the dead. "Have mercy on me and raise me up... by this I know that you are well pleased with me." (Ps41:10,11)

Witnesses WITNESS what we are doing. So, by default, they are SEEING and WITNESSING what we are doing. This is why courts call WITNESSES. Because they have SEEN.

If Solomon was correct in saying the dead are knowing nothing (See Ecc9:5), and David himself has not yet ascended into heaven (See Acts2:34) then I'm pursuaded how the "cloud of witnesses" surrounding us is indeed figurative language.
Moreover, the Hebrews 11 passage also informs us that all of these witnesses died (Enoch included) and have not received the promises but were assured of them.
Since we have such great examples to inspire us to endure, we look to Jesus alone, who has received the promise.

David Guzik thanks, need a lot, in a pretty bad place all around, chronic illness is messing with my spiritual walk, it prevents me from a lot and has messed up my mind, chronic pain and suffering for yrs will do that, it’s 24/7, getting worse, hard to focus and have strong faith in my situation and state, I’m too young for this, I know suffering is part of all this but I don’t like that it’s getting in betw me and seeking Jesus. Chronic debilitating illness ain’t no joke on how it can affect someone all around, I wasn’t rooted well before illness so I think that’s part of my battle being harder than maybe someone who was deeply rooted before trials for example, also acute trials vs chronic and life long ones are tough, I don’t feel like I can catch my breath, all I do Is cry becuz this is so intense and I’m at it alone in isolation, not by choice, thats just part of chronic illness, when one can’t function like others anymore, they forget about them

@@pdpode8978 truly heartbreaking to read your comment about your suffering! Check out Jeremiah klaas on healing journeys today; he is one of the few who will not burden you with works but he will always point you to a child-like dependency on JESUS and cast all your care's on Jesus. He also gives out his phone number if you should want ministry. Jerimiah will be able to relate as he himself struggled with chronic pain go 8 years before JESUS healed him, Also get hold of a book by PETER YOUNGREN called The Faith that Works; Both teacher's will emphasize the importance of Relationship with Jesus and that Faith works through Gods LOVE...

@@pdpode8978 I'm so sorry you going through this. It is hell on earth and the loneliness is just the last straw. It's a VERY hard road for you but as pastor David read here in Heb 12:2, "fix your eyes on Jesus". When you're in pain, it's dark, it's night, your discouraged, depressed, sad, broken, so lonely and at the very end, that's the time to look at Jesus, how much he loves you, he died for you, he suffered as much as you are now because he loves you and wants to give you joy, peace and his presence for eternity. Look to Jesus, thank him, read His word, listen to pastor David endlessly on CZcams, listen n sing songs n hymns n pray, even if it's only tears, to God. You will find help in your hell, pain and loneliness. Fix your eyes on Jesus. The minute you begin to feel down, sad, and all the worst just fix on Jesus. He will help you, I've proved it in a place like you. Listen to this again and again. God be with you where you are.

3 years later and I pray you’re doing better. Both physically and spiritually.
I too live with chronic illness and pain. It’s debilitating and you’re right. People tend to forget about you.
For me, I just cling to Jesus. I didn’t go to church for years because of it but have recently started going on Sunday mornings. I can’t participate in any of the extracurricular activities there, but it’s good to worship with others. I sleep with my Bible when it gets really bad. And I just pray for Jesus to hold onto me.
Lifting prayers for you. May you find peace in the Lord.
