Roger Staubach played eight full seasons as the Dallas starting QB. He won six division titles, four NFC championships, won two SBs by a combined 38 points and lost two SBs to the great Pittsburgh teams by a combined eight points. In half of the seasons he started, he took his team to the SB. At the ages of 36 and 37, he led the NFL in passing in 1978-79. In some ways, the career of Roger Staubach is almost like that of Gale Sayers. Sayers played only 68 NFL games, is regarded as one of the greatest RBs of all time and was the youngest player ever to be inducted into the HOF. Staubach, when judged by other great QBs (Unitas, Montana, Manning, Brady, Favre, Elway, Marino) had a short career. One can only imagine what kind of passing numbers he would post in today's pass-happy NFL. One can only imagine what his career would have looked like had he not endured so many concussions, forcing him into retirement while he was still at the top of his game. One can only imagine if he had played for 12, 13 or 14 years. His career, though legendary, might be looked upon with even greater historical impact. Two heartbreaking losses to Pittsburgh - especially, SBXIII - are what prevents Staubach from being heralded as the greatest QB of all time. Had Dallas won either of those SBs, Staubach would have been 3-1 in four SBs, having faced great defensive teams in all four games. Tom Brady, despite his 4-2 SB record, never faced a defense nearly as formidable as the '75 and '78 Steelers defenses Staubach faced. The NYG brought pressure on Brady in two SBs and yet those Giants' front fours were not nearly as dominating as the Pittsburgh front fours that pressured and beat up Staubach in SBx X and XIII. Had Brady played against those Steelers front sevens (and Mel Blount), I doubt he would have four SB titles to his credit.
Imagine what would have been if he played football out of college instead of 6 prime years in the Navy...also if he faced some of the cream puff defenses brady faced...Carolina, atlanta and early eagles and played with todays rules? His numbers would have been surreal.

Say Jackie Smith holds on to tie the game at 21 in the 3rd, or if Randy White does not fumble the kick-off in the 4th that set up the Swann TD, or if Dallas recovered the second onside kick and tied the game with a FG to force OT. Pick any of those scenarios. If the Cowboys would have won that SB they, not the Steelers, would have been the team of the 70s, and with that distinction, players like Pearson, Cliff Harris, Harvey Martin and Chuck Howley would probably be in Canton today. Swann made spectacular catches in the SB but his regular season career stats were not spectacular, even if you correct for the pre-1978 rule changes that opened up the passing game. Still, I have no problem with Swann being in the HOF. But if Swann is in Canton, I believe Drew Pearson and Cliff Branch should also be there. Branch may one day get in. I doubt no. 88 will ever don the gold jacket. :(
I think his work up the time of the accident was well worth HOF consideration. Most HOF QBs had receivers either in the hall or that were at least considered for the hall. The glaring exception for me is Tom Brady. Roger did it during the greatest era of pro football though.
Indeed. Cornell Green, John Niland, and George Andre, too. These guy, and those mentioned above, anchored teams that that had winning records 20 consecutive seasons, 18 playoff appearances, 12 NFC Championship Game appearances, played in 5 Super Bowls and won 2 championships. And, left us with countless memories.
Best clutch QB ever (yea, I'm biased too, I admit it). But he's still the best clutch QB ever, regardless. I loved watching him play, cause you always knew Roger would always find a way to win.

I just sent a letter to NFL FILMS to put this out on a DVD with bonus/extrras film that never have been released such as the FULL 1968 scrimmage you sometimes see against the Rams. That should be released instead of just sitting in a vault. There should be a 4-5 hour Roger dvd released by NFL Films. His bust is not most requested to be seen of living HOF members, his stuff sells out the fastest on Shop NFL.com and Mitchell and Ness....the man is as close to God as you can get, PURE CLASS.
In my mind, Roger Staubach was the best quarterback in history. He may not have all the records but we was a focused leader, a good guy, great arm, tough, and runny ability. He was "Roger Dodger" who made impossible moves. He was built to be a quarterback.

As a kid growing up in a Pittsburgh in the 70’s I remember how my friends and I always believed Roger was better than Terry Bradshaw even though the Steelers always won. But we believed if Roger played for the Steelers we would have still won 4 Super Bowls (maybe even more) and his stats would have been much better.
Giants fan since they came to NJ, but I was a 'Boys fan when Staubauch was there & he was an all-time great, with Naval Service thrown in before the NFL - and AFTER the Heisman! If Denver's (or wherever the hell he plays) Osweiler is "worth" 72 mil, Staubauch would be worth 5 times that.

Still the greatest college QB of all-time and along with Oscar Robertson one of the 2 greatest ever at BOTH the college AND pro level combined. I put him a distant 2nd at QB behind Otto Graham in pro history. Most everyone forgets he missed FOUR years to the Navy which included a Vietnam tour. He could do all the things which made Graham the greatest (top level passer, ballcarrier, leader, playmaker and winner) only like all other QBs not nearly the winner Graham was and also, not quite the passer.

To win the game in a two minute drill, it was hard to pick between Stabler, Griese and Staubach, all epitomized the quarterback as a field general under pressure.
I guarantee you if Romo had the quality of a "team" Staubach had when he played, Romo would've had at least 2 SB rings! Romo had everything against him during his tenure with Dallas - no consistency in the offensive schemes, players either coming or going or causing team dissention, no running back that can even come remotely close to a Duane Thomas, Tony Dorsett or Emmet Smith, offensive lines that were never consistent; either lack of protection or constant drive-killing penalties (are ya listening, Flozel Adams?), Dallas never had a marquee punt or kickoff returner during Romo's career with Dallas to give him those occasional short-field drives, and as far as the defense was, yeah, they had some very good players, but team discipline was a constant issue! So many 15-yard defensive penalties (unnecessary roughness, facemask, pass interference, etc...) The pressure of being a QB for the Dallas Cowboys, especially having to follow in the footsteps of Meredith, Staubach and Aikman, forced Romo to feel that he had to do everything due to lack of team effort and discipline! This caused Romo to have those occasional moments where he would throw that untimely interception or maybe that fumble trying to scramble for extra yards! Tony Romo has a career passer rating of 97.1, fourth best in NFL history being A. Rodgers, Russel Wilson and T. Brady! He is the Cowboys' leader in passing yards (34,183) and TD passes (248 - 9th most in NFL history among QBs who played their entire career with just one team). Romo led 27 game-winning drives in the 4th qtr and overtime during his 2006-2015 career, the most in the NFL over that span, one more than P. Manning and M. Ryan! 75 of Romo's 248 career TD passes came in the 4th qtr, three more than Staubach and Aikman combined! Those are just a few of Romo's amazing stats during his years with the Cowboys that so unfortunately will be tarnished because he was never able to win the "BIG GAME"! Football was and still is a team sport and I don't CARE who the QB is, without the complete quality of the team, a QB can only do so much! A few others come to mind as well (F. Tarkenton, D. Marino, J. Kelly, D. Fouts). Just something to think about!

As much as I loved Coach Landry, he actually held Roger's ability down. They lost Super Bowl five because he would not put Roger in because of a silly rule he had. Joe Namath in the pregame show mentioned the entire league knew Craig Morton had a tendon injury like John Unitas and no longer had his cannon arm.
at Bob Hayes' HOF induction in an interview Staubach said (and Darrell Green also said) that if Hayes was playing today he'd be tthe fadtest player in the NFL

I'm a little ashamed to say it, but I hated Staubach with a passion back in the 70s. It was because I was a St. Louis Cardinal fan, and they had the fiercest rivalry in the NFL from 1974 to 1977 (believe it or not, they split those eight games 4-4.) But looking back, if it were not for my foolish hopes for the Cardinals, I'd have loved Staubach. He was great. Tony Romo has all the Cowboy passing records, but he'll always be Tony Loser, while Staubach will always be Captain America.
Yes, I was a Cowboy fan back then, and the rivalry between Dallas and St Louis, and Dallas and Washington were fierce. I would rather Dallas play Oakland or Miami than these divisional teams.
Watch the 1970 NFC Championship game Dallas v. San Francisco Morton had a below average game at best. That year, Dallas' defense led them to the Super Bowl versus the Colts.
I have on dvd a Flag football game from 1990 RFK the Cowboys old timers vs the Redskins old timers. Roger, Charlie Waters (my hero)..with knee braces and all, Drew, Tony Hill, BH Dupree, Calvin Hill and John Fitzgerald...I think Harvey plays as well and they DESTROY the Redskins 48 or 49 to21 and it was not even that close. There was a fist fight, Roger threw for over 400 yards and he RAN..RAN them all over the field, it is hilarious to watch. George Allen is going crazy on the sidelines saying Roger was cheating because he was scrambling so much. LOL. The year before they beat the Skins at Texas Stadium even worse. LOL

I guarantee you if Romo had the quality of a "team" Staubach had when he played, Romo would've had at least 2 SB rings! Romo had everything against him during his tenure with Dallas - no consistency in the offensive schemes, players either coming or going or causing team dissention, no running back that can even come remotely close to a Duane Thomas, Tony Dorsett or Emmet Smith, offensive lines that were never consistent; either lack of protection or constant drive-killing penalties (are ya listening, Flozel Adams?), Dallas never had a marquee punt or kickoff returner during Romo's career with Dallas to give him those occasional short-field drives, and as far as the defense was, yeah, they had some very good players, but team discipline was a constant issue! So many 15-yard defensive penalties (unnecessary roughness, facemask, pass interference, etc...) The pressure of being a QB for the Dallas Cowboys, especially having to follow in the footsteps of Meredith, Staubach and Aikman, forced Romo to feel that he had to do everything due to lack of team effort and discipline! This caused Romo to have those occasional moments where he would throw that untimely interception or maybe that fumble trying to scramble for extra yards! Tony Romo has a career passer rating of 97.1, fourth best in NFL history being A. Rodgers, Russel Wilson and T. Brady! He is the Cowboys' leader in passing yards (34,183) and TD passes (248 - 9th most in NFL history among QBs who played their entire career with just one team). Romo led 27 game-winning drives in the 4th qtr and overtime during his 2006-2015 career, the most in the NFL over that span, one more than P. Manning and M. Ryan! 75 of Romo's 248 career TD passes came in the 4th qtr, three more than Staubach and Aikman combined! Those are just a few of Romo's amazing stats during his years with the Cowboys that so unfortunately will be tarnished because he was never able to win the "BIG GAME"! Football was and still is a team sport and I don't CARE who the QB is, without the complete quality of the team, a QB can only do so much! A few others come to mind as well (F. Tarkenton, D. Marino, J. Kelly, D. Fouts). Just something to think about!

As much as I loved Coach Landry, he actually held Roger's ability down. They lost Super Bowl five because he would not put Roger in because of a silly rule he had. Joe Namath in the pregame show mentioned the entire league knew Craig Morton had a tendon injury like John Unitas and no longer had his cannon arm.

I'm a little ashamed to say it, but I hated Staubach with a passion back in the 70s. It was because I was a St. Louis Cardinal fan, and they had the fiercest rivalry in the NFL from 1974 to 1977 (believe it or not, they split those eight games 4-4.) But looking back, if it were not for my foolish hopes for the Cardinals, I'd have loved Staubach. He was great. Tony Romo has all the Cowboy passing records, but he'll always be Tony Loser, while Staubach will always be Captain America.
Yes, I was a Cowboy fan back then, and the rivalry between Dallas and St Louis, and Dallas and Washington were fierce. I would rather Dallas play Oakland or Miami than these divisional teams.

I have on dvd a Flag football game from 1990 RFK the Cowboys old timers vs the Redskins old timers. Roger, Charlie Waters (my hero)..with knee braces and all, Drew, Tony Hill, BH Dupree, Calvin Hill and John Fitzgerald...I think Harvey plays as well and they DESTROY the Redskins 48 or 49 to21 and it was not even that close. There was a fist fight, Roger threw for over 400 yards and he RAN..RAN them all over the field, it is hilarious to watch. George Allen is going crazy on the sidelines saying Roger was cheating because he was scrambling so much. LOL. The year before they beat the Skins at Texas Stadium even worse. LOL

It was amazing what Saubach used to do, but it begs the question, why he had to be Captain comeback so often? I prefer Troy Aikman, most of the time he was ahead.
