This is why i love youtube and the people who take the time to share their wealth of knowledge here.
My house was built in 1892 and i have lived here 20 years. As I'm learning about wild edibles, i have to wonder if the large patch of mullein that i've always just mowed down was cultivated on purpose many years ago. Fascinating to think about and, either way, I'll not mow it down any more. Thank you for the information :)
Perhaps I cud market all that mullein for the sole purpose of natural medicine that duznt hurt the body. Imagine how rich u cud b putting all THOZ pharmecudicle co. Out of business. Also I've had a few friends die from cancer, b4 that , they always complained about how bad the medicines they took were and they always came back eventually worse than B4 they went into the hospital.😢
I love mullein! I use the blossoms, leaves and root. I make a tea, sometimes adding Dandelion, but always use honey as it's a natural antibiotic. This is nature's mucinex and helps so many issues. We made it thru 2 rounds of the dreaded virus ( yes that man made one) with this. It has lung healing properties.
How many times a day did you drink your tea? I have dried mullein I ordered in bulk and I've been making tea to help my horrible sore throat. I combine the mullein with dandilion root , Pau d' arco, and nettle. Sometimes echinacea too.Right now I'm sucking on a manuka honey and lemon sucker I had ordered for my daughter for when she gets a sore throat.
@@marygayquigley9672 when I'm only using it for arthritis, once a day while it's bothering me. I'm lucky enough to not have constant discomfort. If I my husband or myself are sick, I've had it up to 3 times a day but I didn't stay there long. My 11yo has had it only once a day.
@@aimtrue918 Thank you so much for sharing.😊
@@marygayquigley9672 you're welcome, I hope it works well for you!
My first mullein flowing this year. Thanks for all the great info.
The sugar is necessary to EXTRACT the medicinal properties within the mullein. I'm not sure honey would have the same effect with extracting the medicine from the mullein. People are thinking the sugar is to better the taste but that's not so, it's necessary to get the medicine out of the plant because it's making the plant "sweat" out.
For everybody not wanting to do that, I would suggest you simply take the flowers and leaves and make a tea out of the mullein and add honey or whatever you want to add. The tea works just as well as the syrup, but the problem is having to constantly make new tea or storing dried mullein leaves for when you need them. The syrup just increases the shelf life of the plant and can use it without going through a process of making tea.
Jesus bless you all 😊
What amount of syrup do you take and how often? Thanks for sharing any information
Great info! I would think honey might ferment the flowers?
As far as I know honey would largely do the same thing the sugar content is so high. But personally I would use glycerin over anything with sugar since this is for when the immune system needs help you don't want the extreme immune suppressing effects of anything with sugar. All it takes is 10 grams to cut your immune function in half. Let that sink in.
Remember God’s fourth commandment KJV is reminding us of the beautiful Genesis 2:2&3. Jesus is our example. He kept the seventh day sabbath rest even the forty days after His resurrection!

Here in America the mullen flowers are very small. You can use the whole head with flowers. People think you shouldn't use the stalk part, which if indeed is curious because the stalk is how the nutrients flow up to the flowers. I use it all.
Have you ever used honey on the flowers to make a cough syrup?😊
Indians smoked the leaves. I make a tea with the leaves it works well
I was wondering about the stalk, so thanks for the info!!!
@@bryantcompton1642 I've smoked the leaves for congestion. It seemed to help and didn't taste bad or strong.
I heard the seeds aren't good to take. Maybe that's why people don't use it. Thank you for the information. I love learning from other people.
Mullin leaves can be used fir shingles because it reduces inflamation and the burning pain. Make a dark tea from steeped leaves strained through cheese cloth and drink the tea also. Ive seen it work in the first application. The shingles was gone in two to three days
During the quarantine something called me to the forest and I've found all these amazing plants.
Always enjoyed horticulture and nature but now more than ever we need natural resources
Just a friendly fyi: if you find very young plants, they transplant well, with a little extra "care" for the first few days (protect from direct sun).
@@khm2128 i found those plants last fall, and as i remember - googled about the plant and found about it needs two , or three years to flower. before it, it grows as some weird looking leaves on the ground, which they claim was earlier (than toiletpaper) used as as to wipe your , not mouth hole.
and i found the leaves growing in the same area, so i transplanted it to a friends garden, in the shadow from the northern sun behind a small plank(raised garden), and now it seems to begin to flower. actually i have removed the plank just today, so we will see how it gets. but i will get some compost to it too, i think.
in sweden they are called "kungsljus" (translated to english would be like "the licht of the king").. and it seems to be illegal to fish with them in this country, which might say something.
as for cough syrap, i think honey would do better than sugar. not the least because it says in the holy bible like, "eat honey, My son, because its good"
@@jesuschristislordoflordsan427 The seeds in the flowers have been historically used to stun fish. The seeds have a soapy substance called saponins which are not poisonous but relatively toxic.
The plant usually flowers in the second year, although i've had some do it the first year.
The Swedish name, I would guess, is because the flowering stalks, after they've gone to seed, can be dipped in candle wax to be burned.
The leaves are soft in the first year, which is the toilet paper reference. It is too risky to get the itchy hairs in the wrong places, in my opinion.
The leaves, flexible stalks (not when old and woody) and the woody root can be used to make a decoction. This can be used to fortify the lubrication in the joints & to fortify the trigone muscle (responsible for urge to urinate). Regarding strengthening the trigone, squats should be done also, to strengthen the pelvic floor.
The leaves can be heated (in a dry skillet or maybe in the microwave) to make them steamy. Then they can be applied to sore feet. This is especially effective for plantar fascitis.
To see nice documentation on herbal rememdies, see the online site of Henriette's Herbal (Henriette Kress).
Same here... :)

Lol , definitely not a good place to experiment with .
The mullein flower makes a great oil for earaches as well. Just fill a small jar with the flowers and add the olive oil let it sit for 4-6 weeks and strain.
Can you use mineral in place of olive oil?
Can it be fresh flowers?
@@ishka3405 yes
Thanks for that tip I suffer with ear aches
@@nonig3898sleep with that ear facing the pillow. I had the same problem till l did that. Use antibiotics too.
I would use honey over granulated sugar any day.
great suggestion. it was the one thing throwing me off in this video
I would suspect that the reason she is using granulated sugar over honey is that the sugar brings out the liquids in the flowers through osmosis. Would this be more or less effective at extraction than honey or a simple simmering decoction? I have no clue. A similar process is used when making Fermented Plant Juice out of weeds in Korean Natural Farming.
The honey syrup does ferment, just flip and burp your jar daily.
If I used sugar I would use raw sugar, if allergic to honey.
it says in the holy bible like, "eat honey, My son, because its good"
My mullein never opened its beautiful flowers until evening, then they smelled like lemon in the breeze. Very beautiful.
Such an amazing video! I can’t thank you enough for sharing. Big Pharma has convinced everyone we need to take all these synthetic medicines to treat illness & in doing so, the priceless knowledge of natural herbal remedies, passed down for generations is getting lost to the sands of time. I hope you keep sharing because information like this is invaluable
Great presentation, I recently discovered mullien and have experimented with making tea, it grows wild in Arkansas.
I have copd and drink the tea for my lung health and find it helpful in loosening phlegm in my lungs making it easier to cough up! I’ve only been at this for a month but am pleased with results 🤔
Dear brother, did you use leaves or flowers, please, dried or fresh leaves?
You can use the leaves dried or fresh!
Yep I just moved to Arkansas and I was delighted to see Mullen everywhere
Take.NAC...N-acetyl cysteine. Converts to glutathione.
Has made my mild centri-lobar emphysema almost non-existent.
also from Arkansas and just harvest some flowers.
I did this last year and it totally worked. the syrup came out nice and it was great for sore throats and coughs.
Yes it did work and Does work! Wish I had some Mullein here.
With sugar?
@@osamedennadi6309 Sugar has been used for centuries as cough medicine, preserving, and in canning. Where did you 'hear' sugar is "bad"? Candy, junk foods, and high fructose corn syrup are a bit different than making an herbal syrup...perhaps the small amount helps brings white blood cells that help to heal, much like getting poked with acupuncture needles.
Beautiful recipe Linda. I would use a spoon of Mullein syrup 3 times a week to prevent illness and not just take it when I am sick. I also read Mullein eliminate allergies and heal hear and nose infection. The ALL upper respiratory system too. It's very very good medicine for your throat in general!
yes, apparently you can make an oil infusion to use for ears. Its antiseptic and analgesic. Isn't nature amazing:)
Everything that Mother Earth has to offer is for us to use, EVERYTHING we need is here!
I'm suffering from a terrible cough right now and I wish I had prepared something like this in the summer! Will definitely be making this recipe even if only as a culinary syrup.
I notice a few people mention they'd rather prepare the recipe with honey over white sugar; I think the reason white sugar is used is because it is dry and as such yields a greater osmotic pressure to extract the fluid from the petals. Also, less moisture in the final formula means it has a longer shelf life.
No, you are wrong. Anything put in honey is preserved. White sugar is poison. Period.
I would personally not even use either but glycerin instead. It's been shown it only takes about 10 grams of sugar to lower key factors of the immune system by 50%! Sugar has an extremely powerful immune suppressant effect on the body and the last thing you want to take when ever sick. Extremely important information to remember with what foods you eat. Think broth, or chicken noodle soup not nice pudding. No sugar, low simple carbs.

You all make me nuts.
🤣😆 That was hilarious 💐🙏🇺🇸
Thank you for the video! I'm not going to critique you for a thing! I think you're amazing! I loved every second of the video! ❤️
I wonder about adding some chopped leaves as well? Also, i wonder about adding spearmint or peppermint leaves to the mullein flowers?
😎 If adding leafes keep in mind that this is a biannual plant, and leafes are most effective piçked early in the season from first year plants, without the flowers. The flowering happens in the second year.
The leafes can be dried, and kept for tea making. Also helpful in case of asthma.
so glad to find you!
That kitchen is spotless!
Very well explained! Thank you Linda
I'd like to try this. Thanks for sharing.

Awesome video thank you Linda. You can come and teach me exactly how to do this.
This was wonderful.
Wow I was not expecting that! So cool. I'm waiting for my flowers. I have a bunch of mullein this year.
Cool technique, I assume you could get quite creative with ingredients, horehound, hollyhock, thyme......Will try it out next summer, thanks for the clip.Great to see the flowers used for a remedy more than the traditional infused oil ear drops.
Thank you for such a great video! Very informative yet simple and easy to follow. I have to wait for my mullein to grow but really look forward to trying this.

Honey would be the best way. It has medicinal properties as well as being antiviral and antibacterial. Never would have used sugar.

Actually, yes it would. The most common liquor used is probably vodka, but lots of folks use whiskey just 'cuz they prefer the taste. I use peppermint schnapps, actually, and I try to use the highest proof I can find/afford. Mullein is an expectorant, though, I think, while the liquor would be a cough suppressant, so adjust your ratios based on what you need most.
Just checking to make sure I understand correctly. I use liquor instead of sugar? I like that a lot better! I'm a big fan of Makers Mark! 😋
Wow ! Interesting.
I have a fairly large crop of first year Mullein...cant wait to harvest flowers next year and make this beautiful syrup.

The first part, sugar and flowers, is basically how you make cheung (Korean fermented jelly from my understanding). Though you can do the same in the refrigerator.

You can buy tinted tincture bottles online. It's also probably cheaper than buying them from an Rx office. I just made a jar of mullein tincture last night. In a few weeks, I'll have a jar of medicine. It's just the leaves, so I need to find a flowering stalk to make the syrup! Wish me luck! 😊

Thank you so very much for this video, Linda!!! We purposefully have mullein growing in our yard, and it's flowering. :-) I had found this awesome video last year, and am so glad to find it, again! I'm hoping to try it this weekend, and do it with honey--I have a mild allergy to sugar(!!!), and sugar is also an inflammatory, not good when you have arthritis, or any other inflammatory condition ending in "itis". :-)
I a diabetic and I don't eat sugar, so, I to was wondering if there was another way to make it without using sugar.
Make a tea with it then!
@@J_Chap Do a tincture it seems to work as well.

I would imagine that honey would make it last longer as it has antibacterial properties. Looking forward to making this.
Hi Big Dan! Can this be made with local honey instead of sugar? If so that's what I'll do!
I was just thinking that during the video hahha nice... I may try doing the sugar packing for extraction and adding honey to the finished syrup for preserving, maybe even some citric acid; especially since honey and lemon together are already a sore throat remedy in our household...
Inger Weaver Local honey is the best! Most honey from the store is pasteurized and loses it's beneficial qualities.
ThePsylent Asylum I'll add lemon to my remedy next time. Our household is huge on warm water, honey, and apple cider vinegar for coughs and sore throats, and many times I prefer drinking it vs spiced cider or hot cocoa in the winter.
oh wow over spiced cider is huge! never thought of apple cider vinegar for coughs, we use it for digestion, tinctures for those who cant use alcohol, baking and getting rid of fruit flies by making a trap using dish soap, a container covered in cling wrap with tiny puncture holes... better than fly paper, honey or any chems
.... we also dilute our honey and lemon mix with warm water and if you are already having to take acetaminophen or its herbal supps you can add to make a substitute for that expensive "neocitron stuff" in packets ...
You are easy to like 👍 captivating
Excellent !
Blessings +++!!!
I had trouble with the sugar. It was lumpy all over. Then I added maple Sirup. And that solved the sugar to sirup with a lot of sun on my balcony. But the Sirups starts to build already.
I love your voice. It remi ds me of Queen Elizabeth's ❤❤❤
I wonder if the flowers of other plants could be prepared similarly...I am trying this method with Anise Hyssop flowers, which are also good for coughs. It's in a sunny window now. We'll see!
Reading this 5 yrs later did your experiment with Hyssop flowers have success?
I just smoked some of the Leaves?
Its truly a God send Flower ! And I have made the Syrup before.
The Smoke is potent, but mild and almost tasteless.
+LindaBostoc What type liquid did you use to extract from the mullien leaves.
Interesting we have seen this in australia
Having an earache, I wish I had some plants. I did order dried flowers, I hope to make some syrups, tinctures and teas from them. Hoping it works with dried flowers.
For those battling recovery from Type II Diabetes, will Monk Fruit sweetener work as well as Sugar or honey? I have used Monk Fruit for all sorts of food processing. Also, in central Colorado, the Mullein plants grow tall but only have one flowery stem rising from the middle covered with very tiny flowers/pedals (smaller than a pencil eraser). Hours and hours of time to pick enough pedals to fill a quart jar.
Thank you 😊. Could you use honey or something other than sugar? Would the sugar chrysalises in the fridge?
Any thoughts on how to make that for a type 1 diabetic?
