- Come with me on a journey through time and space...well, to 1993 (!) where I'll be building, painting and playing my way through Games Workshop's first Warhammer 40,000 starter set.
In this episode, I try my hand at making the cardstock terrain a little easier on the eye!
Speaking of eyes - keep your eye-holes open for the next episode, where I'll be battling my way through twenty Goff Boyz!!!
Music: / royaltyfreeplanetofficial - Hry
You cut foamcore like you peeled a ton of potatoes in an old timey navy ship.
Lol, he must have experience
Or an HMP 🤔😂

His/her majesty's prison 😂
FYI a drop of washing up liquid in the watered down PVA mix would break the surface tension and cause it to soak in rather than bead up. Love a bit of 2nd Edition - thank you.
I love the white dwarf cover art as posters on the walls. 👍
You have a good eye! :)
@edpaintsminis the posters were awesome how did you make them?
Oh dear, i´m in! Right in to the storage room now. Great job!
I am starting to do that. Thanks for the inspiration
Maaaaan I love this already, I Will never look at these paper terrain the sama way again!
Really interesting idea for a series! Such great nostalgia value with those early editions being lovingly updated.
Love this old cardboard terrain!!!
Well done!!
if you stayed consistent with your videos with doing at least 1 or 2 a month, with the style and quality of your editing i could EASILY see you becoming as big as Mid Winter Mini's, you have similar production qualities and voices and its nice to have another channel thats similar to MidWinters to watch when he's inbetween new videos, keep doing more! we all love it!!!
Wow that's high praise indeed and I'm not sure I agree with you - but thank you :). I'll try and get at least two out a month so you can look forward to some more videos soon.
@@edpaintsminisI agree with him. Very nice video
@@edpaintsminisi agree. Your content is great and especially your narration on the armageddon vid drew me in completely. You take the nostalgia of oldhammer and dial it up to 11.
Agreed, very enjoyable
What an excellent video! Huge smack of 2nd Ed nostalgia with some fantastic innovation. A pleasure to watch and really looking forward to the project continuing! Also great cat addition.
What a lovely collection of nostalgia. A great series idea.
Thanks so much! There was a bit of a delay between videos, but the ball is well and truly rolling now!
If you add some isopropanol to the watered down glue, it will break the surface tension and keep it from beading up like that. Also, it helps the glue flow everywhere.
@@edpaintsminis Awesome, looking forward to it. Cheers. 👍
Nice easy way to improve the cardboard terrain.
Another one on my to try list!
This gives me such a good basis to do my old Mordheim terrain!
What a great idea for a series man! Looking forward to the minis video and more cat time!
Was born after 2nd Edition but have a lot of Nostalgia for 3rd so I really appreciate the older aesthetic. This is a brilliant idea, so I’ll definitely be keeping my eye out for the next episode.
Sub earned!
Oldhammer was way before my time but I love the aesthetic.
I really enjoyed this! Nostalgia overload for me - I’m definitely going to give this a go with my own 2nd edition card terrain! Thank you for the inspiration mate 👍
Thanks Mad Doc! That's awesome. It has been really surreal seeing people do this on Instagram and various discords I follow. Let me know how you get on!
How you turned that old paper terrain into detailed pieces, amazing.
The whole time I was freaking out that you didn’t paint the piece before gluing on the OG cardstock; thinking you’d accidentally get primer on it or something. Then I realized…you’re a much better painter than I.😂
I found your channel not too long ago, and I have to say you're the best so far covering old hammer. Everything from the terrain, models, and even your battle reports theyre all A grade stuff!
Thanks so much! That's very kind of you. I'll try and keep the content going!
Before adding the second load of texture to the base you should have used "WET WATER" which is a railway modellers trick for making the glue soak in without moving the scatter around to much. So what is "WET WATER" you ask.
It is water with a drop or two of dish washing liquid in it. It can also be helpful to add a drop or two of dish washing liquid to the PVA glue water mix. The idea behind it being it breaks the surface tension of the water and allows it to spread easy and soak in to where it is wanted.
Amazing work you are doing here, you are inspiring me to make similar things with my old set.
This just got pushed onto my recommended feed, what a great take on the 2nd edition card terrain. I'd love to see a similar interpretation for other 2nd edition card terrain, perhaps the Firebase or Bastion, the Gorkamorka fort, or even Necromunda terrain.
Fantastic work!
Welcome to the channel! I have been hunting for a firebase for a while now. As soon as I see one for a decent price I'll go for it. Alternatively I might scratch build my own...
Same year i got into the hobby. Man. time flys.
so cool ! even the space kaktus... all of your videos =))
I have my two oldest boys (7 & 9), using the orks and Gretchen’s models from the 2nd Edition Box set to practice painting.
Unfortunately I gave the space marines away to friends when I got this 20+ years ago.
Nice Video! What a great Idea 😊. I would have Likes to see the ruins set up with some miniatures though.
It's in the works!
These look so good!
Your videos are absolutely killer! They've inspired me to start collecting and painting my 2nd edition minis (I don't have many but i'm hoping to have the full 2nd edition box set as a collection.) Keep up the amazing work!
That's amazing David. I wish you luck on your journey into 2nd edition.
@@edpaintsminis 3 gretchin down! 37 to go...
@@_Nythim_ Thoughts and prayers. Thoughts and prayers. :)
That's incredible. Wish I had time (and space) to do that.
Reminds me of the old days when we did the same thing. Great stuff.
Instead of dripping the PVA on with a brush to set everything, mix 2:1 water and Mod Podge. then get a little spritzing spray bottle thing, and spray it over with that. Works wonders to seal everything in!
Mod Podge works so much better for sealing stuff than PVA.
Awesome tutorial mate, can’t wait for some more videos
Thanks buddy- I'll get back on it soon!
This looks amazing!
Something you could try on future terrain builds is hitting the reverse side of your printed posters with sandpaper in varying sections to create a distressed look.
Good call! I'm going to try this.
Looks great! I love how you preserved the original cardboard terrain while sprucing it up
Aha! Found your how to do 2nd Edition terrain video - excellent!
This is awesome! Totally earned a subscription from me. Looking forward to seeing how the rest of the project turns out!
Man, I love the 2nd Edition box art. Spent hours looking at it as a kid.
My guess is the box was purchased before 3rd ED came out? They were selling the 40k starter set with Dark Millenium included for £20 for a short time, it's how me and my younger brother got into 40k as kids.
That's an interesting bit of trivia! Yeah I guess that is likely what happened!
What you've done is awesome. Brings back so many memories of my Blood Axes and Evil Sunz. Love it.👍
Quick tip for the thinned white glue slurry that you added to the basing; add some flow improver to it to help it flow and disperse a lot more easily.
This is unspeakably dope
Gorgeous job
Great video! Do all the starter boxes!
Wouldn't that be something...
Alcohol breaks the surface tension and spreads the thinned down PVA. That way you wont need to add many drops of it and wait for them y to spill all over the terrain. Great video
@@edpaintsminis i love how you are reconciling "classic" terrain with the modern "weathered" style. Havent seen that way of restoring old terrain before. How marvelous to have that box in such good condition. Maybe you could put some of those repetititve gretchens in "new grimdark" style bases with bits and such. They may be all the same but the bases could tell a story on their own. Whatever you do with this project im looking forward to it.
Brilliant!!
I don’t know man. I have this set. And the terrain is still mint. One of the great things about these old games is playing them as they were played at the time. When you do all this too them, you just end up doing what you could do with any modern terrain. I guess that is why I prefer to leave mine as I played when I was younger.
Fair play! My set was a little battered so I felt needed a little TLC. All these materials were available in the 90s too and I seem to remember people did reinforce them usually by putting them on card bases - I just went a little further! People also have commented on the lack of goblin green/flock which is understandable! Thanks for the comment and the watch 🙂
Ánimo con todo el contenido que estás creando ❤
Great idea and well done
Hahaha love the White Dwarf poster!
Thanks very much!
If only I had thought back in the 90s. This is perfect, love it
Very nice!
Well done great idea jazzing that retro card terrain up
Love second edition ❤
LOVE IT!! Very nice and really like the old school vibes...
Aw you must have been so buzzing to have the dark millennium contents as well! Fantastic video! Outstanding terrain instructions!
It was! Apparently they did a really good deal on both boxes before the arrival of 3rd so this isn't too unusual. :)
Alright that was awesome, subscribing.
@@edpaintsminis Oldhammer was slightly before my time (4th ed) but I love it anyways. I had quite a few metals from that era :)
Very cool vid, nicely put together, deserves all the views :)
Great work! and terrain looks absolutely rad!
I'm now working on my own warhammer 3d edition project
Yay! Cat time!
We shall keep an eye on your career with great interest.
Great builds dude, good nostalgia hit too.
Come for the grimdark, stayed for the cat
love it!
I’d have copied the card terrain onto full page labels, for the inside of the foam core.
I had *exactly* the same experience of the 2nd edn box!
Great video, I'm really enjoying the content on this channel.
To give some unsolicited advice, don't use rubber bands round the cards, they can perish over time and stick to the card, potentially leaving a mark (unfortunately I'm speaking from experience here). I'm trying hair bands instead now, hopefully they won't have the same issue.
Cool video, but the use of rubber bands to hold the psychic and wargear cards together is distressing - rubber bands often degrade as they age and can fuse to whatever they are attached to. When that happens you won't be able to remove them without damaging the cards.
Hi Ed! Great video!!! Im going to do this today with my 2nd ed terrain! What thickness foam core did you use? I'd like to know because it looks perfect. Thanks from the states!
I hope this channel didn't die in it's infancy.
Sorry buddy, I am afraid so... You can see the finished project and other bits and pieces on Instagram though: @edpaints_minis
@@edpaintsminis This video popped up in my feed again. Unfortunately instagram doesn't work on my end. Is there another way of seeing it?
looking good thare wil never think to do that back when nest bet reps
❤❤❤cat time!!!🐱
Subbed for this!!! Thanks!!
I really wish there were pdf scans of the cardboard terrain! I'd love to have my own but they are no where to be found.
Check out the files section in the 2nd Edition Facebook group. 🙂
Fantasitc vid. Only comment would be to show the fronts of the ruins a bit more at the end as you kept cutting the camera away just before they rotated onto the view (focussing on the back of the ruins only)
Thanks Tristan! Yes I remember when I was editing it kept dropping out of focus - so I salvaged what I could. You'll get a much clearer view of it all in later videos though once I'd figured a few things out! Thanks for the comment! Ed
Just 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🤘🏽
man! I also have some minis to paint!
hiya, loving the channel. trying to follow this along myself - not getting good coverage on the mod poge + paint stage, any chance of more detail on what you ddid there/products? Not fancying doing 5 coats or so w the mix i have!!
Hello! Awesome to think there are folks out there following the tutorial. Just thinking back, it was only the inside walls that were painted with the modpodge paint mix, using regular artist acrylics you can get in any art shop. I didn't mix any water in at all, and it was probably more acrylic than modpodge (in the end between 60-70% paint to podge!). You shouldn't have any trouble with coverage then. Let me know how you get on!
Thanks will give it a go! Really enjoying the videos you’re creating, from the content of them to the editing, please keep it up!
Where to get that little Posters on the walls? maybe as a pdf?
greetings
As a fellow content creator would you mind me asking how you managed to get that incredible jawline? I'm missing one.
@@edpaintsminis noted! In all seriousness though, great video man! We gotta get dem subs up!
Brilliant job on that card terrain. Just shows what can be done. Subscribes and looking forward to the journey
@@edpaintsminis thank you. We do try. Good luck with this and I hope you get loads of views
Watching you draw that craft knife towards you gave me an anxiety attack. JFC that was a slashing waiting to happen.
Nah nonesene, doing this for 6 years and only got surface cuts from cleaning up mold lines lol
@@klyk69 I've had the knife slip and slashed open a finger. Just because you were lucky doesn't mean everyone will be.
Card stock scan so we can do the same?
CAT
use a bigger cutter knife, will be easier than this school cutter whose blade flexes that much
if you make corc rubble, make it not weird cubes if they represent stones form the wall either make them the correct sice or break them up, as they are broken now
good you put up the posters straight, putting them jagged would look weird as noone puts them up not straight
Glad I did the posters right...👀
@@edpaintsminis you made it all right, just giving a pointer to how to make it even better, thought you wanted to make it as good as can be to show others how to achieve that
what a great idea! I still have those cardboard terrain pieces at home, I think I will do the same with them. Was it intentionally to not copy the inside of the walls? I cannot do this anymore, unfortunately, because I glued the pieces already. I think I have played with the stuff from this box about 3-4 times with my brother. The terrain we used more often, however we both played (surprise, surprise) Space Marines. So we did not really used the Orcs.
Thanks so much! Great that people are still commenting on this video a year on. It was intentional to not do the inside walls, as things would have got a bit more complicated I think. I pretty much just made it up as I went along!
but why? You could do the same without destroying the paper terrain...
I apologise for this flagrant act of cardstock vandalism...😂
This shouldn't work. The backs don't match, the fronts are 2d.
And yet, it looks awesome.
I love finds like this. I never would have even considered trying this.
But now, I probably will.
Great job. Well worth a like and subscribe.
No one actually played 2nd edition. It was far too complicated to be fun!
underrated content!
