- It amazes me that this song was written by Lennon and McCartney in 1965. That means that they were in the early twenties. Two young men, and the lyrics are so deep. It's about looking back on your life, and it makes you think about all these wonderful and great people that you meet in your lifetime. And then there is one love that is above all of them.

John told his closest friend Pete Shotton, this song was written for him and Stuart Sutcliffe who died in 1962.
The song was written in 1963 when John was 22. John told Pete this was the only song he has written that came from the heart.
My wife and I had been married before we re-married 4 years ago. We were in our late 60's. Obviously our past lives were full of memories, mostly great ones and a few sad ones. We played this song as we signed our marriage certificate to remember our past loves and heart aches, but most of all the final lines which say it all so sweetly that touched all us and those we love.
