Just wanted to throw this out there ... One pot chef noted that once the white rice is cooked it can be used as a base for other dishes ... such as a stir fry. CHILL the rice before using it in a stir fry. Once you fluff the rice, stick it in the refrigerator, uncovered for an hour or 2 before adding it to a hot wok or frying pan. It will help the rice retain its integrity while infusing the stir fry flavors into the rice. If you add hot rice to a hot wok one of 2 things will happen. Either your rice will not absorb the stir fry flavors or you keep it in the wok longer and the rice will start to disintegrate. (same applies to cooked noodles in a stir fry!)

Do you need to rinse or soak the rice before cooking? I'm 31 and rice has always been my biggest struggle to cook the way I want it. Mom always cooked it different ways for me depending on what I wanted, sticky rice, fluffy rice, soupy/starchy rice (usually when I was sick). Now I tend to use a Lot of those 'Minute Rice Cups' and Love them. I add a little Italian dressing soon as it's done and it's wonderful! A daily snack for me. However trying to cook perfect not starchy rice the old fashioned way has been a struggle. Even the Minute rice in bags doesn't taste as good as the Minute rice cups. I've seen videos of people rinsing and soaking the rice before cooking and some who don't. I would love your input on this and advice. 🙂

My grandmother always sorted through and rinsed rice (dirt, starch), but I think you have to make adjustments and put in a little less than the 1 or 2 cups of water, because the rice is already wet.

@blitzWest Use a heavy-based saucepan when cooking rice. Make sure that you reduce the temperature to LOW once the rice is boiling, and then don't forget to take the rice OFF the heat all-together after 10-15 minutes and allow it to stand (covered) for another 15 minutes before serving ;)

Thank you *so* much for this. Your 15 minuting standing tip is spot on.
I've recently returned to cooking my own rice after many years of laziness and was bought a Microwave Rice Cooker for Xmas 2 years ago, but could never get the texture right.
So, I came back to the "old fashioned" method.
I disagree about the amounts. I cook one 3rd of a cup with 2 3rds of a cup of water and it turns out perfectly. No problems with smaller amounts.
I did, originally have issues with it constantly boiling over, which I've solved by leaving the lid off for 5 of the first 15 minutes and then covering, works a treat and *so* far, I've had a perfect outcome every time and the pan is a cinch to clean afterwards.
So, many thanks, once again! 😉👍

Is it necessary to wash the rice before cooking? I've always done it for some reason. And thanks for this video; sure beats buying a rice cooker.

+Corey Hunter not necessary but it removes all the extra starch on the grains. I think washing it before make it taste better. all that extra starch makes for a weird taste

I'm a bit obsessive when it comes to rice, so I let it sit in water, then wash thoroughly, then tip the water out then add new water and repeat a few times. It takes on water during this process so i use less than the 2:1 ratio and maybe use 1.5 water to 1 rice. Works for me.

Great 👍. I don’t use butter but I sometimes add a bit of olive oil or coconut oil. I also saute the rice in the olive oil for a few minutes . I let it roast a bit not too much then add water .

Ron D My grandma always rinsed her rice beforehand and she cooked it in a pot. I never found out if she adjusted her water to rice ratio, or not. Her rice never stuck to the pot and was always fluffy. She didn't like the extra starch in her rice I guess; but she was born in the 1800's so my thoughts are that rice was processed differently back then, and needed to be rinsed.

Oh, wow, THANK YOU so much for telling me that!!! No one EVER mentioned that little detail to me before...
And with this "new idea" of bringing rice to a boil with the lid OFF, I got brave and tried this method on brown rice, which I prefer to eat if it is not "gummy," and I got the nicest pot of brown rice, EVER!!!
I still have not been able to get the perfect white rice...still "mooshy" and gummy...but I am thinking that I need to use less water, as I did this once and ACCIDENTLY made great rice...but, again, it was just that one time!!! (sigh)

I even tried other links and carefully followed their advice, but still the same problem: "mooshey" gummy or overcooked and undercooked rice... I even bought Jasmine Rice... I am willing to try again. You are so kind, and your instructions seem so simple... Thank you for your videos!!!

Something he left out in this vid is to rinse the rice before cooking it, as that rinses out the starch that makes the rice "mushy", just rinse it in cold water about 3-5 times or until the water becomes somewhat clear. You could also leave the rice in the cold water you're going to boil for about 10 minutes before you start the heat.
