It's not impossible but also their comparing the weapons but not the people -_- Who makes the weapons completely different. Along side of the battlefield even if the weapons break its not gonna be that easy due to weapons of those time period has to be up to quality. Note most smith's live under a lords protection and on their land.

It has nothing to do with the strength of the steel, rather with the lack of skill required by blacksmiths that use more modern methods that end up being better than older ones
Those people should not be callled "blacksmiths". Wheres the part where you grab a hammer and make a knife out of a piece of 5160? They just cut the piece, grind the edge, put handle and that's it.
I love how both made relatively historically accurate pieces unintentionally from opposite periods. The one guy made a 15th/16th century type meant for combat. the other made a 17th/18th century type where being pretty was as or more important because it was a badge of rank and a signal device.

Sorry but that's rot. The gigantic Orc fantasy Partizan would have knacked you after five minutes of use. A Partizan should be fairly light to manoeuvre. Yes his first one wasn't good enough but he had a good shape/weight/design his second would be built with experience. Mr bigger and badder will never get any better.

happydemon I like discord tribe technically he did better but this was an error on the judges for not having clear rules or rules visible for us to see. It just feels like it takes the fun out of it

This show is so nice to me because almost all the competitors actually appreciate the works of the other contestant. So many other shows have their contestants leave and start cursing and blaming something/someone. Like, "I did a great f*ing job I don't know what they were thinking," that kinda stuff. Can't blame him for the differential heat treatment. Made it lighter and more balanced, but it bent because of lack of total strength. He gambled and lost, but it was a good gamble.
He has an incorrect understanding about heat treatment. differential heat treatment doesn't make it more springy, it actually does the opposite since the middle isn't heat treated an thus won't return to true when bent.
no, differential heat treat is dumb idea, all it means is your edge is TOO hard and brittle while the weapon overall will have tendency to bend and STAY bent ... if the test involved flexibility that differential construction would automatically fail ... it was used in the past when materials werent as good, but has absolutely no place in weapon design with modern materials why compromise the structure of the blade from the get go when you can have the whole blade to be hard AND flexible.
"I'll know though... :( aww I'll make another one" - that's the mentality of a craftsman who loves their art! I know he lost, but I guarantee he's taken this as a learning experience and future works will have reinforcing features
It would be really awesome if they could test those weapons against a armor, a helmet or a shield of their respective era. Could be fun to see the difference between having protection and without.

@ClaudeSpeed3 Cutting out a shape template from a steel sheet isn't the same as forging at all. It isn't even an argument, the very definition of forging is to heat metal in a forge and hammer it into shape.
I think that design is to actually prevent the blades from sliding off to the sides, normally that would be what you want but since this is a strength test the armor is made to "catch" the blade. Sometimes jousting shields are designed in a similar way.

You want that weapon to slide off the armor, not increase its (while admittedly low) chances of penetration or damaging the armor. Besides when I commented I was talking more about the chainmail than the breastplate.

If Philip would've cut his blade out during the first stage, he would've be dq'd. He forged the socket and did a tiny bit of forge welding on the medial ridge. It sucks that John applied too much clay at the base of the blade. The fact that his blade had a hamon made it so gorgeous. 😳😒
