  • "That's the Larry Bird of Candlepin Bowling right here!"
(Re-uploaded in better quality and in one piece) Air date: 7/19/1986. Ray McGuirk was looking for his 4th straight win on Channel 5, with this particular telecast featuring Tom Olszta trying to defeat his streak. What followed was one of the best performances in the history of the show on Channel 5 itself, that also broke one of the longest records that was held on the show for almost two decades! In addition to that though, this particular telecast also allowed for a VERY exciting re-match that happened just one month later in the big Championship show itself.
Hope you all enjoy, and R.I.P. Don Gillis.

Other Candlepin Bowlers would be considered legends, notably Paul Berger, Dick O'Connell, Rosario Lechiara (first to get a Clean Game in this series), Tom Morgan, Tim Lipke, Joe Ashline, Jack Quinn, the Czernicki Brothers, Kansas Snow, Tony LeBlanc, and Rick Martin (one of Candlepin's best spare shooters).

bowling can be so weird, tom olszta went nuts in this match and ray mcguirk couln't do a thing and the they turned it around in the big end of season match where ray had a huge day against tom in the final and he came out on top for the big money. tom olszta will always be the goat though.

I'm from Canada, and I used to watched Candlepin Bowling often on the Maine Public Broadcasting Network that was part of our cable television package in Halifax, and also Halifax Community Television Candlepin Bowling shows.
When ATV had "Belvedere Superpins" series, I usually root for Tony LeBlanc, Bill Black, Rick Martin, and Kansas Snow.
Tony LeBlanc was exciting to watch as he always used "Alley Balls" and still did very well.

Been watching Don Gillis Candlepin Bowling as far back January 1970. You'd think after Tom's 150 he'd let up a bit. Give Ray lots of credit for good sportsmanship. In all honesty whenever I rolled a high single and triple there was always that one opponent who turned the to be a problem( putting it mildly).
Even when I was just 14 I rolled a personal high score and of course
Mark Pumphery has the nerve to ask me "Who kept your score, did you roll 3 balls to a box, did you go over the line".and other mean choice words.
Even when I was in the men's league again I roll some high score and my opponent throws a idiot temper tantrum.
Again I can name names but im much better than that.

I used to see Ray all the time at the store he worked at. Nicest guy in the world. Loved taking bowling. He got his revenge on Tom by beating him to win the live show. Tom was just the perfect bowler. His ball goes a million mph and he's scary accurate. Plus it curves a tiny bit at the end to give it that extra punch.

@@larry930legendI'm a Ten Pin Bowler but I always enjoyed watching these Channel 5 Candlepin Telecasts hosted by the late GREAT Don Gillis & I AGREE with you 1,000%. I wish they had that telecast when Rosario Lechiara bowled that 468 Triple in 1966, 1967 or 1968. That would be AWESOME. LOVE YOUR COMMENT. R.I.P. Don, I miss you.

Don Gillis definitely showed why Nova Scotians make the best television and radio announcers.
Thing to remember is that Nova Scotia doesn't have one single accent, but have several different variations of their Atlantic Canadian English dialect due to different migration patterns in that province's history, notably "The Foreign Protestants" in the 1740s and 1750s (mostly Montbeliard French, Swiss, Austrian, and German immigrants), New England Planters (1750s - 1770s), United Empire Loyalists (1770s and 1780s), and Scottish Highland Clearances (1770 to 1815).
As someone who is originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia, and a descendant of "The Foreign Protestants" and "Highland Clearances", I know that Gillis' accent is definitely Canadian Maritimer Nova Scotian.
