These exercises are great for developing your single strokes and double strokes, as well as basic accents. Once you’ve worked through this warmup, try some of these exercises from the legendary drum book, Stick Control!
Beginners: note the freedom and height of those rebounds!! This is essential, and may not be easy at first. Allow your hands to feel the sticks’ tendency to bounce (like off a trampoline), and with soft fingers and wrists follow the stick up without slowing its ascent; get the weight of your hand off the stick when you want it to rebound and then just give a little shove toward the drum for the next note - just enough push to get a full height on the next rebound. This exercise, done properly, is the foundation of EVERYTHING.
And - as always - it’s more fun to practice rudiments along to songs, so enjoy this epic Kaz Rodrigez track (or find one of your own that’s at a good tempo for you).
Download the sheet music & backing track with the link below and check out the full video over on our CZcams channel. Links below👇

Not sure why it’s called a “beginner” warmup. This is a great warmup for anyone.

Not only is the warm up/exercise amazing, the video production/effects and music are great too! Emmanuelle is one of the best drum teachers on CZcams (if not one of the best). Thank you Emmanuelle!

Love this warm. I’m still a beginner and more like an exercise to me and still struggling with the accent portion. But it’s coming around and I enjoy this warm on my lunch break or when ever I have a short period of time to get some reps in. My hand speed has improved in a short amount of time on these also as can get ahead of things while totally in chill mode.

    Beautiful exercise sheets, well done.
I like, how you look at how high your sticks bounce back - even at the double strokes they are at the same height!
That's wonderful to learn and warm up with!

Awesome! You rock! I'll try this today. I typically have to play paradiddles around the kit to warm up. It gets my ghost notes and doubles dynamics feeling comfortable and even. Then I go all Animal on the kit! 😁

Franchement Emmanuelle, il est bien dommage que vous soyez loin car j’aurais grand plaisir à préformer avec vous ( à un level nettement plus bas ...). Un bonjour de Paris 🤓😎😉
