It is said about the ancient Bhatner fort that it has been attacked more times than other forts in India. But this very old and magnificent fort is still standing proudly. The history of this Bhatner fort, spread over 52 bighas and having 52 bastions, located in Hanumangarh, Rajasthan, is quite interesting. It was built about 1738 years ago i.e. in 285 AD by Raja Bhupat Singh of Bhati dynasty, hence it was named Bhatner Fort. By the way it is also known as Hanumangarh.
It is one of the few forts made of limestone in Rajasthan. Made of burnt bricks and lime, this fort is considered to be the strongest fort of ancient times. Timur Lang has written in his autobiography Tuzuk-e-Taimuri that he had not seen a stronger fort than this in the whole of India! It has been ruled from Akbar to Prithviraj Chauhan. On the other hand, if we talk about foreign invaders, it was captured by Mahmud Ghaznavi in 1001 AD. When foreign invaders entered India, their first encounter was with Bhatner. That's why Bhatner is also called the gateway of India.
