The bassist is grooving like he never left the 80's. Love it
That is because he hasn't !!! And why should he?
Bass REALLY drives the song.
His rythm has been shaking hips from the 80s till now
He really does play effortlessly
None of us that lived through the 80's ever truly left it.
i think this is the only tutorial for any song where they actually tell you the speed of the delay/effects.
Nathaniel Johnson that was so cool of them. And ALL of their original gear and rigging used on the original recording
I definitely got too excited for that.. 308ms :D
Gonna try it on my Zoom effects processor later..thanks guys...love AFOS!!
very helpful,
Just a question, without that value it is difficult to find the right effect?
Paul Reynolds is a guitar genius who has been criminally underrated.
Agreed.
Akárcsak Andy Scott.
True
Yeha
There's another one of those stupid underrated comments he is not underrated he is widely known as a great guitarist
Eligible for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame since 2007. Who will agree with me it’s time these guys were recognized.
This whole album is great, new wave should’ve been the future, but fizzled out.
New Wave Hall of Fame.
100%! This is the epitome of New Wave. I'll never forget the first time I heard "I Ran." Was at a record store buying Ozzy Osbourne lapel pins 🤣 when I suddenly heard that atmospheric riff. I turned around and just stared at the music video. It was the coolest thing I'd ever heard.
some years there is no nobel prize for literature as no one is deemed good enough. that being said having existed or even 1 or 2 hits doesnt get you into the hall fame. there should be some kind of rule. lets face it, its a popularity contest and thts not how you get into any hall of fame. is skill and musicianship. not bullshit
That Rock n' Roll 'Hall of Shame' charade DOES NOT even deserve born musical geniuses like A.F.O.S. gracing its halls. The institution is a silly cash-commerce driven joke and and has a downright embarrassing history of how it treats extremely talented Artists.
Truly awesome to see all original members from a 38 year old band together making a vid like this. Thanks guys! Keep em coming
I love this band
And please stay healthy we need you guys for the future yessssss
This is one of the coolest things on CZcams
he'll ya
Indeed!
Holy shit, if only more artists and bands did this!!!
I've been saying this for days, couldn't agree more, what a way to learn the way they did it and gel with the band and jam together at the same time, what a concept!!!!
Probably easier for them seeing it was their only hit. Great song
@@pickzkickz Wishing and Space Age Love Song, too. But this one was a monster hit.
I hear ya
They would only do it near the end of their careers. When they are still making money they wouldn't want to give their secrets away. I've heard that Peter Hook of New Order used to scrape the markings off his bass pedals so that people couldn't see how the sound was made.
This song is simply “Perfection “ at its best. And coming from the original members is even better. Awesome. 80’s. BEST decade EVER!!!!!
Paul. That guitar sound. Those freakin soul slicing notes. Always. Forever. My hero
“Soul slicing” lol
Yup, spawned a genre and inspired The Edge, among others.
@@DavidSchilter hear hear!
Pay attention, folks. THIS is how you use CZcams.
grxengine Just had the same thought! I’d watch more than kittens if there was more content like this. Tho I do love kittens.
Yep. Not this "un-boxing" and "reaction" video rubbish. What kind of mindless NPC finds that a worthwhile use of their time to watch.
Tony Rule I’m not sure I have the answer to that one but I get it!
@@TonyRule hahahahaha
Winner.
Paul Reynolds, one of the 80's most underrated guitarists! Brilliant!
Square Creative and he used a damn penny for a pick. WTH!!
@A.C. B. ART what ever you say dude
@A.C. B. ART You are aware that this isn't the only song AFOS has, right? Not to mention, you make it seem like keeping things simple is "wrong" or "bad" when just about every major musician strives to do just that - keeping it simple. Some of the most famous and popular songs of all time are simple with just a few notes throughout. There's a reason this band (the original lineup) still attracts tons of positive attention, even after nearly 3+ decades of not having played together... guy...
@@RiverOfBlacklights .hell for playing simple concise riffs, and producing a multi-platinum tune....props to him!
@A.C. B. ART it was Paul's feel that made the guitar parts sound so cool
one of the best guitar riffs of the 80's

Paul Reynolds still got it, love the band coming together and still have it, would love to see them live today.
You can see Mike scores flock of seagulls in UK later this year
Sadly I don't think another reunion of the original lineup is going to happen. Mike prefers his touring band, plus recent health issues with Frank (has a rare heart condition) & Paul (recovering from a stroke he suffered in early 2020, though I have heard he's doing better).
FYI, Los Angeles July 8th, 2023 free show at Pershing Square.
This is why there will never be a decade of music like the 80's!!! Pure awesome genius!!
@Dr. Bombay so is your entire existence on this earth
I like the song, but how is it genius?
@@ChadtheHammer people can have opinions.
They also are not bound over to explain them.
Genius is a relative and unquantifiable term. To him, this could be the result of genius musicians.
Just let him say it, it wont hurt you.
@@LFOVCF Ummm, I'm just asking a question, guy.
bassplay12 ... Indeed ... what decade lots of memories
Masterpiece, this is one of those rare songs that you can never have enough of it.
Fact
Paul is one of the most underrated guitarist ever. This guy was 19 when he was pulling off these licks....amazing!
Thats why they hired him barely 17 y/o. He was pulling talent years earlier and they watched him, then needed him, without him there was a problem.
@@janebraun4482 A true virtuoso, not many of them these days outside of classical music
Yup, the Edge of U2 fame has credited Paul as a real influence!
If you think Paul is "underrated", you are just ignorant of the fact he has long been considered a great guitarist.
Great player yes.
"Virtuoso" might be an overstatement. Look at the tab here - not that complicated. Set the delay and a beginner can play it.
Now look at tabs at what 19 year old Jimmy Page or Jimmy Hendrix were playing. It would look like a Beethoven music sheet.
You can't get more 1980's than this iconic song. It's takes me back to some wonderful memories of my 20's.
What an amazing time we live in, with original artists teaching us how to play their hits!
Yes. Glad you shared that thought. I also get more 80s now than I did then!
Sage, I just left a similar comment on another of FOS videos. I didn't see how colourful & vibing the 80s were till I peeked through the rearview.
I think that's pretty amazing, and they seem really nice!
“Easy when you know how!” LOVE IT!
> 5:17
I didnt understand him yet you told it.
Wow amazing i want to play a guitar.
Wow amazing i want to play a guitar.
Frank's a character... 🤣
"I Ran" is one of my favourite songs of my lifetime. 💕 The sound is still as fresh and tight today as it was all those years ago. A gem indeed!
Amen sister ❤
We saw them play last night and they were still as great as ever!!❤❤
40yrs later, STILL a great song ! A forever classic.
“I ran” released 1982 and still an epic song. Thank you for this amazing tutorial.
Little did my 14 year old self at that time know that 37 years later they'd be doing something like this.
Xul Nag , I was probably 4th grade or so. I wasn’t too big of a fan at the time , but the girl in my class who I had a crush on, was ... so I pretended to like em . But today , some 37 years later , I like and respect the band - if for no other reason than sparking memories of growing up in the 80s - a blessing.
Epic hair styles and aerosol hair spray.... ha ha.
80s talent and energy, you just had to be there to understand. there will never be a time like the 80s again. we were in our prime then....Damn the time and gravity
I know, I really wish I could experience it. sometimes I just wanna restart my life in some perfect world that people seem to remember it as. I know realistically it wouldn't be all that great, but it'd really have its moments. the modern world just makes me sad. sometimes I just wanna escape most technology for a while, get some friends and just go out somewhere
One of the best songs from maybe the best musical decade.
I was thinking as I clicked on the video, imagine being 17 when this was released and hearing it for the first time.
Great song, but crap entry level video. When spinning around with the mirrors and you see the cameraman and lots of fog.
Well said
It was a glorious time and the music fitted it like a glove.
I flew out to Perth W.A in August 1982 and this was rapidly climbing the charts Down Under. Couple that with Hot in the City (Billy Idol) Dexy's etc and you realise the coming summer (Down Under) was Just...So... Perfect
Thanks for the Ch00ns AFOS. Your band was a major soundtrack of my youth.
This is the pioneering sound that seismically changed the landscape of modern and electronic rock music, forever. You are the heartbeat of the eighties, and you're still going strong! Thank you for still being here for us.
The electric guitar man... Mesmerizing... The quintessential 80's sound.
Paul's guitar playing is what made this song great.
Yep, it's fascinating how it dances around the basic groove.
@@bryede yes how genius but so simple is that counter melody of the lead in the chorus!! the best songs are so simple
Maybe I'm biased as a fellow guitar player, but I completely agree; Paul's guitar bits transformed a catchy synth pop song into an instant classic. He plays with great restraint.
@@arsbadmojo He should be ranked in the top 5 best guitar players in rock music
@@Isotec1 I've been saying that for years, thank you!!
Mike, I know you've played/sung that song till you are blue in the face...BUT, that song is a masterpiece. You, Ali, Frank, and Paul helped DEFINE The 1980s and THE FUTURE (as We speak and hear)...everything officially blew in to view with this classic! Thank you, Gentlemen. I'm getting your new album as a Xmas present.
Amen!
well said. Foxborough Mass. 82ish the open up for the police... awesome tune!!!
I wouldn't bother with the album. I'm a big fan but the album is a major disappointment. The best gift would be if the original four members reunited and toured, but of course Mike won't let that happen. He'll just keep plodding on with his second division FOS tribute band
Well said, Anthony! Just adding to what you wrote songs like "I Ran" was what made MTV what it was back in the 1980's. Unfortunately since about the early 1990's MTV has become a ghost of it's former self and I had to quit watching it. Now I come to CZcams when I want to see a music video of the past. To hell with MTV!
Phayzyre105 -- Someone, a few years ago online, very correctly commented that CZcams is the new MTV/VH1 in the 21st Century. It is truly twisted that a video here can rake up 5 million views, but the song/single will barely net repeated plays on the radio. To think that much of the original, great visual material made in the '70s, '80s, and '90s have been stowed away and relegated to MTV2 and Classic VH1 seems antithetical to what the original channels were committed to. Thank goodness for CZcams.
I love a Flock of Seagulls. Paul Reynolds is amazing. The guitar sound in this masterpiece is just perfection. I can listen to this song every day. Thank you guys.🤩
personally i would love a lesson from Paul for EVERY song. which i mean as no insult to the rest of the band i would to see a lesson like this for ALL the songs, its just that the guitar is what i play and Paul had an absolutely amazing sound.
You know consistency when a band can play the same song 30+ yrs later and it sounds near perfectly identical to the original studio recording. That was excellent.
I agree on the perfectly identical on the spot it blew me away as well
40 +yrs.!!!😁😉🤭❤👍
they played this song probably over a thousand times throughout the 80s, it comes second nature to them
It was the studio recording.
There's a certain magic when the original 4 play together.
I love how into the song the bass player is. Like he never left 1985
He never did. Your body ages but your mind doesn't have to.
"Easy, when you know how"
Check out bass player Frank Maudsley in this fun clip. He’s a gentleman you would want to find in a pub and chat over a pint.

Yeah and he didn't need the bass player to cover his mistakes. Not that he made any!!
@@Ed_Okin I met him about 11 years ago in his house in Norris Green Liverpool. Don’t know if he still lives there but I never recognised him and asked about all his musical equipment in the front room . He said he’d been in a band that had been quite big in the 80s in America
The level of transparency with the band playing, sheet music and factoids were very intriguing! A lot of bands should adopt this approach.
Why give away trade secrets? Learn how the hard way like they did.
Headphones on, record spinning, after class, in dorm room, laying on top bunk, room dark, eyes closed, songs taking my imagination light years away from where I was, feeling at peace from the troubles of college in the 1980’s. Thank you so much for your music.
I'm not gonna lie.....
This is seriously the coolest thing I have ever seen on CZcams...
This song has so much going on and it all blends in perfectly.... real musicians are extremely rare these days...
@Sono2 Why do you answer your own question with a question? Do you always dig up graves to find girls to go out with? Wait, did I just do that? Did I just do that again? Aagh!!!
Its not about talent anymore just money.
@Sono2 All business is about money, the music industry are not bothered about talent in the respect they would rather focus their money on throwaway artists who they can control like puppets. Which in turn is detrimental to a diverse spectrum of talented people who create there own work.
So fucking bad ass!

AMAZING TUNE, ENTERO DE BKN... JAJAJA
Saw them in 82 in Boston in a club across the street from the Green Monster at Fenway Park. I forgot the name of it then! I do remember it was Drum Tobacco night, or at least they sponsored the show! The good ole’ days with lots of military jumpsuits, a big Sting influence at the time. I was 20 then and will be 60 in a few months. But when I hear The Police, The Clash, New Musik ( Tony Mansfield), XTC, and all the others, it just takes me back, and I’m 20 again! Music is powerful!
Lyrics:
I walked along the avenue
I never thought I'd meet a girl like you
Meet a girl like you
With auburn hair and tawny eyes
The kind of eyes that hypnotize me through
Hypnotize me through
And I ran, I ran so far away
I just ran, I ran all night and day
I couldn't get away
A cloud appears above your head
A beam of light comes shining down on you
Shining down on you
The cloud is moving nearer still
Aurora borealis comes in view
Aurora comes in view
And I ran, I ran so far away
I just ran, I ran all night and day
I couldn't get away
Reached out a hand to touch your face
You're slowly disappearing from my view
'Pearing from my view
Reached out a hand to try again
I'm floating in a beam of light with you
A beam of light with you
And I ran, I ran so far away
I just ran, I ran all night and day
And I ran, I ran so far away
I just ran, I couldn't get away
Words on point
the first time I saw these guys live was in the mid 80s, they opened for New Order. Paul Reynolds is an awesome guitar player.
MrDmfan More like New order should've opened for them.🎶🎵🎼🎸
One band who contributed to such 80's greatness. They're the real deal
I can't help but recall a funny scene from the movie "The Commitments" when they were looking for a name for their bad. One person suggested "Flock Of Budgies" LOL.
One of the greatest guitar riffs that ever came out of the 80s that still blows my mind. I was up to my eyeballs in post-punk music at that time, but the debut lp was special, so of course, I purchased the cassette. Hearing this song for the first time in 1982 was a galactic journey. Would have loved to have seen Paul playing his old Kramer XL-5 in this clip, but I'm sure that guitar is in a museum somewhere. Cheers!
Saw them..with Squeeze as headliners….The Producers were opener….Grand Rapids,Michigan..summer..1982…
That guitar is also probably insanely heavy
I love the Flock Of Seagulls and this was & still is my jam! I used to stay up all night watching MTV back in the 80s. I rocked this out! Glad to see you guys are alive and well, still a BIG fan...love you guys!

This video is music history. They had such a big fallout because of the stress and fame and it never seemed like in a million years they would ever collaborate again. This video is just amazing... PS I know they got together in that one show awhile ago but this video is still grand!
To never part
They did a few reunion shows in 2004, but it fell apart when they started fighting again.

First heard I ran in a club in mount isa Queensland Australia in 1982, when this song came on the whole place went into hysterics, absolute meltdown, there was no one sitting everyone was up and dancing to this masterpiece of drum beat, synth, guitars and that unique voice of score.. and in 2021 it's better than ever..!!!
Because of songs like this, I wanted to stay in the 80's for ever......
I was a teenager in the 80s. It sucked. Some of the music was good. That's about it. High unemployment, terrorism, run down council estates and schools. It was aweful.
I would certainly agree. I'm 49 the 80's were king! I'd trade in the current political bullshit and division for the cold war any day.
I know perhaps every generation feels this way about the music that was popular at the time but still there was something special, inventive and exciting about the 80's with the introduction of MTV. This song IDENTIFIES and DEFINES the beginning of so many things 1980's. For instance: MTV, Turner's Night Tracks, Syntho-Pop, Hair Styles, Plastic Clothes, Great Original music! This song was one of the three opening salvos of the 1880's genre: I Ran, Video Killed the Radio Star, and Whip-It! Dudes are OLD now!

And the idea to make this video is absolutely fantastic! Thank you guys so much! You made my day!
Paul Reynolds must be one of my favorite guitarists of all time. To me, a brilliant guitarist is not playing something difficult, it is about a unique contribution to a song that can only come from your mind. The idea for a vibe and a tone that sets a unique sonic characteristic that sets you apart of other players is what is brilliant about Paul Reynolds.
Had me in tears! Reminded me of when me and my daughter would play this song on Rock Band on expert. It was the hardest song to play, very difficult. Good times!
Paul Reynolds makes the guitar 🎸 sing 🎶 absolutely class 😎🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
I've watch this over a hundred times and can't stop.

It’s 2021 and I think it still sounds ‘cool, fresh’. I hope children listen to it and love it as much as I do.
Any of you giving this down votes this is my first band that I followed in the 80's and they have tremendous abilities in their instruments and vocals.
Love the sign-off - "Easy, when you know how." Super song and delivery.
It's like Paul never touches the strings of the guitar when he plays! Awesome!!! Genius!!! Love you Paul!
Thank you so much for this! The formatting of this with the staff/tab in a window below the video of the instruments being played is great. The true brilliance of this song is simplicity of the individual parts that come together to make wonderful driving pop song that soars into space.

Thats a hell of a bass line. The guitar is hypnotic. Love it and the concept of the video is so cool. Helps you realize what a great timeless song this.
Can only say one word.
brilliant.👍
This was the first song I ever heard on a compact disc. My brother and I came home from school and mum got a small Phillips CD player, the kind with a push-to-open door on the top, out of the airing cupboard and popped this on. We stood there and listened in silence, it seemed such an alien sound to us, having grown up on a diet of copied and stretched Led Zeppelin and Beatles tapes. I can remember it like it was yesterday. It would have been around '99. R.I.P Mum.
As a fellow Bass Player, that was magnificent! Paul's guitar solo still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up! That slide is legendary......
Finally I get to see how the outro guitar solo changes pitch. It's not the lead guitar Paul is playing which is by the way awesome changing notes that causes the change in pitch, it's Franks Bass and the synth that causes the effect! I had to listen to it a few times to pick up on it as Paul is playing the same notes, but the pitch is changing. Wow I just learnt a hell of a lot about this song that I did not realize and I must have heard it thousands of times. I have been listening to this brilliant track since it was released when I was a teenager. What an eye opener and many thanks and big props to the band for taking the time to play and show us the way it is meant to be played........bloody brilliant....period!

Simple, but genius, I have adored this song for almost 40 years ❤️❤️
As a child of 70's classic rock, I used to call "I Ran (So Far Away)" a guilty pleasure. Bu the pleasure it has given me for 40 years means I long ago dropped the "guilty' part. This tune along with "Talk Talk" and "Melt With You" are masterpieces of the 80's and three of the songs I will take to my grave in the Top 50, all time.
