MVDP has shown himself to be not just a beast of a rider but a tactically astute one as well, and a best dressed World Champion..... stay with the black shorts Mattieu. So classic and so classy!
as a one day racer: best tactics, descending, bike Handling, raw punch, calm under pressure, race feeling
As a big mvdp fan, I would disagree that he's tactically astute. I can't think of many races he's won by pulling off a tactical masterclass. Most of his wins are because he's the strongest in the field. Also here I think he was so much better than the rest, it would have been difficult for him to lose it.
@@slowpoke7347 MSR 23, RVV 24, RVV 22, f.e. yes he can pull off more cause off power but often he lets other big riders do the work in big racea since ~ 2021
@@slowpoke7347 he certainly has become tactically astute. He has incredible learning ability from his mistakes and he can pinpoint those mistakes and elaborate on how to improve this. This race was a tactical materpiece. Being not just in front on the Koppenberg but turning on as number one of the followers was an educated move. He knew the risks of a wet Koppenberg. It helps that the Koppenberg is the venue of a cyclocross race.
Totally agree on the black shorts
Can anyone else hear a static sound in the audio mix?
Yep!
The audio quality in the flanders preview was also quite tragic, budget cuts hitting hard I guess
Before the women's race I didn't even know it was possible to break an ear canal. I cannot imagine the pain that must cause.
Dang 😢
Dan, you are so good at giving us the racing news, love it.
Thank you!
@@DanielLloyd1 Dan will you commentate PR this week?
It struck me, as you mentioned MVDP now equals Pogacar's five monument wins, - how extraordinary the Slovenian rider is! I mean, he's a 25 year young GC rider, and he has five monuments! Quite mind bowing. Not to take anything away from Mathieu's win btw, - he's also an amazing rider and athlete.
You're forgetting MvdP didn't start riding Classics until he was 24.....having ridden CX & XC MTB before that.
Yes Pogacar is great but 3 of his monuments are lombardia. So really doesn’t compare to MVDP didn’t win any lame ones. Lombardia is lame
@@Kipketer911you’ve never ridden in Lombardy from that comment? Idiotic thing to say
@@Kipketer911 A "lame" monument? Oh, OK!
@@Kipketer911 Pog is a multiple Grand Tour winner as well as winner of 5 monuments (Lombardia or not) - something van der Poel couldn’t ever do
We are in an age where we have a number of riders we can compare to Merx. What a time to be alive.
I'm suspicious...
Adri Vanderpoel won this race in 1984. His son wins 40 years later. Some legacy eh?
Adrie won it in 1986, beating King Kelly in the sprint
Not to mention his monument winning Grandfather
After all these years, you finally made a t- shirt I like!☠️
Mads played “all or nothing”. He knew he wasn’t in the best form but did what he could. “Try and see what happens!” Lots of respect for such brave attitude! (But happy Matthieu won)
Walking on dry land on ice skates is called "Klunen" the same thing in effect as walking on cleats.
I wounderd what Pedersen was doing too, what waste of energy. As for the women's race, that was brilliant to watch. It was very good what lidl trek was doing.😃👍
Alpecin hung Mads out to dry out there. It was genius/devious
Dan is rocking one heck of a cool t-shirt!
Great review
Fantastic coverage as always on GCN+. What an app. Looking forward to this weekend's similarly high quality coverage. Thank you Team GCN+. Best app on the planet.
I live permanently in Dec 2023 when my world stopped......🤔
Spettacolo
No surprise with MVDP. Nothing against Borghini but I wanted Kasia to take the win in the women's race.
I have a sweet spot for Kasia too. So many close finishes, so few wins. And she was all smiles again on the podium
I have no doubt this was debated endlessly in-house, but "GCN Racing Show" is much nicer to the ear than "GCN Racing News Show", where the presence of "News" sounds clunky and adds nothing meaningful. On a positive note, I *LOVE* the inclusion of the (green-screened) Shure SM7B! Sounds great! ;-)
Could do with some more images of the moments theyre talking about
Holy Cow! How do you break your ear canal?!? Hoping she's recovering!
Nice Dan 🫡
255 career win 😱
Was screaming so hard for Niewiadoma. Gutted for her but great ride with a pretty poor team.
He is typically a one day racer. Congrats.
For people concerned about the unearthly speeds you just need to look how racing has changed since Covid. Before a group of B team locals would set off on a tour for the tv cameras while the A riders would eat their sandwiches and catch up in the gossip behind Tony Martin before the first climbs but now it’s sprinting from the gun and teams forming chase groups going full gas for the entire race.
don't forget the wind. They go fastest with South-Eastern, simple as that.
Also, don't forget the extra carbs 😅
#AskGCN: With so many riders having to walk up the Koppenberg, and a few crashes, do you think riders would have been better off with bigger tyres for more grip (e.g. 32-34mm)?
Jorgenson's move at 112km was silly
I thought Tom said he was going home for a curry! Best wishes for a speedy recovery Tom. Even more so for the girls who crashed out of Flanders. What a shame the rest of the world can't see women's racing on catch up anymore 😢
01:00 Absolutely right Dan, but if you want to win it you gotta be there!
(But don't get me wrong, seriously sad about Wout's injuries and wanted to see him race.)
If your non-cycling friend asks you who the best male cyclist in the world is (without being able to properly explain the nuances of that), who do you say? It has to be MVDP or Pog right?
Yes. 100%
@-alex-3724
You sound somewhat bitter in your comments regarding Van der Poel.
Then I read your last sentence and it all made sense. It's such a pity that Wout supporters can't be gracious about MvdP and vice versa.
I'm thankful we have these greats all together....Pogi, Jonas, Wout, Mattieu, Remco, Julian, Primoz. Every race, classics or tours are exciting.
@-alex-3724 Tours are so scripted and do not favor the best cyclists. Vingegaard can only TT and go uphill because of his w/kg...very 2 dimensional. MVDP has amazing power from sprinting to multi hour efforts and some of the best bike handling. Oh, and he's a 6-time CX world champion, road world championship, and has won numerous mtb World Cup races.
Imo when you combine wins and entertainment it has to be Pogacar
@-alex-3724 You just sound like you’re a weird, bitter person with an axe to grind. How many times has MVDP beaten WVA in head to heads?! 😂
Like the other guy said, there are loads of great cyclists right now, why bring dumb football supporter mentality to it, just enjoy the show.
Kasia will win something soon
She wins our hearts with her genuine never give up attitude and perseverance.
can you please fix the white noise
He buried himself on the breakaway. No wonder it was the fastest. It wasn’t inevitable, but he did destroy it.
Mic makes a huge difference!!
The rainbow jersey curse seems to be gone. All I can think of in recent times are Pedersen losing most of the year to Covid cancellations, and Alaphillippe didn’t have a great 2022. But he didn’t have a great 2023 either.
wva crash will be the reason for pogacar's one more fail at tdf. perhaps stage 14 and 20.
They need to force them to start in order of ranking. Make the best riders ride in the rain.
Or do the organizers not really care about the fans?
It would sure make later stages more interesting.
Yeah, the last place rider beat Fabian Cancellara time when he won. Sorry, these guys are all on something new.
Is anyone ever gonna discuss how Vinegaard only ever wins TT's in his private season opener against B-stock riders yet wins THE most important TT far superior to even Wout and Pogi? Lemme know ;)
Vingegard is a shit tter outside the tour, especially on flatter courses
We should just quit pretending cycling is clean (actually any pro sports) and enjoy the spectacle.......it wasn't clean pre Armstrong, it wasn't clean in the Armstrong era and it isn't clean post Armstrong (I use him as a timeline because everyone thinks he is the cycling devil).
Because GC riders are better at regeneration than other pro cyclists and so he won't win a first stage ITT especially not a flat one, but has a good shot at second and third week mountain ITTs
Periodization
I always hurt to hear about injuries and the crash which smashed another rider's face makes me think that at least some road races should mandate full-face helmets. Lightweight models do exist, something developed and worn by mountain bikers. And all these high-speed, high-injury road wrecks are getting to be way too much, especially when not an ounce of body armor is worn. Open-face helmets are great, yet surely something more could be done. I'd rather a pad take a hit than a body and it seems abusive that none of that protective tech is employed on the road.
I wonder what Chris Horner say with his "knucklehead" comments 😂
Hi Dan. It’s not hard at all
I have a funny feeling Dan isn't a big MVDP fan. Totally unemotional reporting compared when he talks about minor feats by Pogacar and the rest
I'm a huge MvdP fan. Maybe I'm trying too hard not to show it... Dan
Blood sport - pro cycling is too dangerous for what they pay the riders.
Remco has won all his big one day races (2*LBL + WC) without serious competition, Pogacar won his Lombardies without any serious competition because no one cares about that race really. You can only beat who is there, and on average MVDP has very probably had the strongest competition in his big one day wins. He beat Wout twice and Pogi once in RVV, he beat Pogi, Wout and Ganna and anyone who can win that race in Milan Sanremo, he beat Pogi, Wout and Pedersen at the WC, and every potential contender was in the race at last years PR. Oh and he won Strade from a group of every serious one day and GC rider in the world, were Pogi had two impressive solos but again on both occasions with none of the big one day riders competing.
Sorry, MvDP was disqualified as he stopped his head unit before the finish line.
These mics and the “hiss” are making all the videos really annoying to listen to
Women's races are way better than men's races these days. Almost no point in watching the men anymore. Solo wins with a 2 min gap are tough for the sport.
It must have been the cleanest race ever --- I mean of course, as we know, the testing methods are better than ever, and of course the riders are more honest than ever as well, and it was of course full of "marginal gains" etc.
So -- fastest but cleanest race --- of course ....🤣
yeh fastest ever in the wet that makes total sense in a race with i dont know how many steep cobbled sections its ridiculous tbh
A great epo-ch of male cycling
Chris Horner already covered this
Looked more like a circus? You know very little about the history this race.
Yeah, I bet a former World Tour pro who raced in the Tour of Flanders, and now is a professional cycling commentator doesn't know anything about the history of the event, good call 🙄. He said it looked "like a circus" because it was a spectacle to behold, which is true, it's incredibly rare to see one rider, let alone 100+ riders, walking and slipping up a climb. He's clearly aware of past editions where this happened, but it doesn't make his statement any less true.
Well he does not show it, or should we get rid of all the 'circus' no cobblestones anymore in Flanders or Paris Roubaix and certainly no cycling in bad weather.
@jokemmerling4875 You're projecting your own negativity and cynicism onto his description... a "circus" is joyous, wild, spectacle to behold for an audience = exactly what we saw. Interpreting it as a criticism of the race is more about you, than what was actually said. Nowhere does he allude to them removing any of the bergs AND he's said many times over the years on GCN that Flanders is his favorite race.
Well he should be more cautious about his word picks. We are not all native speakers and I can assure you that calling something a 'circus' in several European languages simply means that it is not to be taken seriously and it certainly does not mean something is fun to look at.
Fasted ever = Best EPO ever
Dopey The Doper - MVDP
🥴🥲😭
For fuck's sake! Can you please stop spoiling a big race in your video title?!
To be fair, 48 hours should be enough to check the race
@@rderouck that is a valid point! But is there a reason to have the result in the title in the first place?
its getting very suspicous now, these big one day races are being won with up to 80km breakaways on a regular basis now.
Don't give a fuck about any other than; Wout broke seven ribs and more? Absolutely awfull, nothing is important other than his health and full recovery, fuck the cycling i don't see enough support for Wout in the comments.
Rather go watch Chris Horners analysis.
He's probably the most annoying CZcamsr currently covering cycling. Painful to watch.
