My wife and I are starting out on this marvelous adventure. We are turning our living room into a conservatory. On the one side will be this very large aviary housing about three pairs of finches. Adjacent to that is a 180 gallon Amazon biotope aquarium. On the opposite side will be a library of historic and miscellaneous out of print books. BTW Great video ... Five years old and still has value.

I recently got two zebra finches with a cage (with all the essentials), a bag of food, a few millet sticks, some hay stuff for nesting, a nesting 'box' and a few treats. I unfortunately didn't get any calcium blocks or a bird bath because I didn't think it was very necessary, but now I will be sure to go back and grab some of that. Thanks for the information!

Hey, great information. Thanks for uploading. Please ignore some of the rude comments from others, apparently the were never taught, "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all". People seriously don't have anything to do except post rude comments. Please keep posting. I'm thinking of getting a couple - love the sound they make. I used to have Java Finches and bred them, hand fed them and they were adorable. Keep posting. Linda

P.S. I meant to mention, for drinking water I use this bottle usually used for watering rabbits (a whole lot smaller), a plastic bottle with the tip with a ball in it that the bird pushes up when it wants a drink. The drinking water is always "clean" for them now. When I got the bottle I was so shocked to see they knew how to use it. The bottle is sold in Wal*Mart & probably any pet store. LOL Judie (again) thank you for this very informative video!!!

I've been wanting to get them sooner, but things like living in a small apartment where pets weren't allowed and my mental condition held me back. Now that I live in a bigger apartment, where pets *are* allowed and I'm feeling better, I'm very much looking forward to welcoming them into my home (once again). :D

Ok so the cage i saw in this vid would be the minimum space I would give for any bird. Getting them a cage this size would be ok for two birds if you want four I would buy a really large cage or put them in an avery like mine. Most finches will live with other birds as long as they are not too big. For breeding boxes you need one for every two finches.

Should I get a nest if I'm only keeping a single finch in a cage? I don't want to get the bird confused and frustrated when it nests but can't breed.

Leo;u yes I would personally, just because they feel safer, and it gives them a nice break from holding onto the perches.

I am about to get finches and your video was helpful. I can tell by the video that you have a cat. I have two. Will finches get spooked by them or will they get used to them eventually? Thank you. Pretty fingernails, by the way. :)
