    Once upon a time, African nations fought each other, as nations tend to do throughout history. After a victory, an African nation would often enslave many of the enemies it had captured. Most of these enslaved Africans, from various nations, were then traded or sold to Europeans along the west coast. Next, the slaves were shipped like cargo across the Atlantic Ocean. This journey became known as The Middle Passage, and it became the largest movement of people in history. Conditions on the ships during the Middle Passage were so dreadful that up to 15 percent of the slaves didn’t even make it to the end of the journey. Packed like sardines in filthy conditions, most died from malnutrition and disease.
    In 1619, a Dutch ship brought twenty Africans to the new British colony of Jamestown, Virginia. The slaves were needed to work in the quickly growing tobacco industry. From there, slavery spread throughout the American colonies. Over the next 200 hundred years, millions more would arrive to work large tobacco, indigo, and rice plantations in what would become the United States.
    During the colonial era, you know, when states were just British colonies, most slaves worked on tobacco plantations.
    Household slaves, those who acted as servants to colonists, were the next largest group.
    Some of the earliest slaves were actually Native Americans, but they tended to die from European diseases or escape, so Africans became more preferable. During the first years of slavery in the 1600s, Africans experienced a relatively high level of racial tolerance and flexibility from their European owners. Several slaves could wander freely, get married, buy land and other property, or even buy their own freedom. You heard that right- that means they were actually paid some for their work, and several Africans in the colonies were not slaves. In some cases, slaves were freed if they were able to prove in court they were baptized as a Christian. In one Virginian county in 1668, 29 percent of all Africans were free. Some free Africans even owned slaves!
    Because many Europeans were indentured servants, whites and black servants sometimes worked together, received the same punishments, and even plotted escapes together.
    Beginning in the late 1660s, colonists in Maryland and Virginia passed new laws that further restricted the rights of all blacks, free and slaves.
    Most slaves worked in the Chesapeake Bay region, working on huge tobacco plantations and large farms. The work was very hard, and slaves were busy most of the year, working sunrise to sunset. For those working on sugar plantations, which were larger than tobacco plantations, the work was even more difficult. While the most back breaking work fell to the strongest and healthiest, less physically demanding jobs were still handled by older or younger slaves- there was no minimum or maximum age for working. Slaves on plantations usually lived in complete family units, and they got Sundays off. Slave families became close, as did each slave community on every plantation.
    This gave way to a new culture, in which customs came not just from their current ways of life, but from memories and traditions brought from Africa. Slaves told folktales and fables, which kept oral traditions strong. Slaves made drums, banjos, and rattles similar to those found in Africa. Enslaved women made baskets using an African coiling method and sewed quilts with African patterns. Many slaves became Christian, almost seamlessly merging their African religions and traditions with Christianity. Their version of Christianity gave way to slave preachers, who led congregations on plantations where they often expressed themselves through singing and dancing. It was a powerful, spiritual way for them to gain hope.
    Tragically, plantation slaves were more likely to be sold or transferred than slaves working inside colonist houses. Tight-knit families were split apart, often with little notice. They were also more likely than household slaves to get brutally punished because they were seen as less valuable than household slaves.
    Household slaves generally ate better, were dressed better, and had more freedom to move about. However, they usually worked seven days a week and worked even longer hours. Other slaves did things like working in ironworking, shipbuilding, and other early industries.

    People point out that only about 5% of the population owned slaves, so how could the slave holders control the government? In the case of South Carolina, that is easily explained. South Carolina was not a democracy. it was a feudal society. Under the Constitution of 1798, in effect at the time of the Civil War, a person was not eligible to sit in the legislature unless he owned the right combination of land and slaves, and the legislature elected the governor. There were no popular elections for president either. Through 1860, the South Carolina legislature chose presidential electors themselves. Also, in South Carolina, except for a brief period during Reconstruction, there was no divorce for any reason. South Carolina did not legalize divorce until 1949, and even now, it is the only state where the permissible grounds for divorce are set forth in the state consitution.

      The "5%" is very misleading. It was true at the time of the Civil War, when most states had prohibited slavery. In slave states about 34% of white men owned one or more slaves.

And yet, they *still* pursue that god.

      @madisonemy Před 4 lety +7

      @@gatsbylight4766 hmm where in the Bible does it say that one race or ethnicity is second to the other? I am truly trying to learn, do you think that the white man misused the Bible since black people couldn't read?

    • @gatsbylight4766
      @gatsbylight4766 Před 4 lety +2

      @@madisonemy - As is often the case with many works of fiction, the writers of that fiction give preference and special consideration for their own kind, heritage, tribe, race, nationality or likeness. Parts of the Christian bible, at the time of its writing, was promulgated by those peoples living in the Judea/Galilee region known today as modern Israel, and many of those people came to be known as Israelites. As such, in the writing of the bible, they gave special consideration to themselves:
      [Speaking of the Jews] *_"For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth."_* ~ Deuteronomy 7:6
      This is somewhat of a central premise of Judaism, and it is common parlance nowadays that Jews, as well as some others, refer to Jews as _"God's chosen people."_
      In Mormonism, Mormons wrote their Book of Mormon - and in their view 'they' are God's "chosen people" because they have accepted Jesus through baptism.
      Elijah Muhammad, in developing 'his' own perspective in his creation of the Nation of Islam, has derived his belief that 'black people' are God's "chosen people" on the basis of..... well, just because Elijah Muhammad said so.
      In Rastafarianism, Rastas developed their own perspective that 'they' are the true children of Israel and therefore 'they' are God's "chosen people".
      Yes, the white, European, and middle eastern men have long used the bible for various purposes - including to control the populace, to manipulate thinking to conform to social norms, and to gain or enforce power. It is well known that many slave owners of black slaves in 17th-19th century America attempted to use the bible to convince those slaves to _"accept the proper fate as slaves as God has ordained it to be so."_
      From the 50 or 100 million black Africans enslaved by Arabs, to the 10 or 15 million black Africans enslaved by white Europeans - black Africans have a long history of being taken away from their own spiritual beliefs and practices and convinced to believe in the gods of white people.
      Clearly, this phenomenon still exists today - as there are many black folk who still worship white Jesus.

My job is to teach, not psychologically traumatize. I give them a safe place, where they may not be so exposed to the violence of TV, social media, the news, and everyday life. I can't protect them from what happens at home. There is only so much I can do for them 8 hours a day from home, for only 10 months. I am not sure if this was your intention but you forget to add the horror, the heartbreak of slavery. What about all the children and people who were raped, militated, tortured, had their feet cut off, etc.? The pictures of dancing slaves and those who could buy their freedom and also owned slaved- those are the exceptions and only make sense in the context of the absolute horrors of slavery. This is a bit too sanitized and so far from how truly disgusting and detrimental this experience really was. Please viewers seek other sources and get a more complete idea of what the experience was truly like. I also don't like how you start with "Africa countries fight and thus sell people into slavery." Slavery was a global economic industry that benefited greedy racist whites who thought they were superior.
    In short, this is disappointing and I don't feel that you connect with the black people forced into slavery the same way you would if these were your people. Maybe that is just how I feel but I don't feel this video and your casual tone does justice to the ills suffered by my ancestors.
    We deserve better. R.I.P. ancestors.

      +Sharla stevens-webb Thanks for watching. This is meant to be a short overview and was never intended to show the horrors of slavery. I recommend 12 Years A Slave as an introduction for those unfamiliar with how brutal it was. I have other videos about slavery, you know. A big portion of my audience is kids, so sometimes introducing the more graphic details is best reserved for a separate video with warning ahead of time. Also, I'm surprised that you didn't know that Africans also had slaves. This is common knowledge.

    There may of been founding fathers who own slaves but that doesn't mean they all treat their slaves as Property. I know George Washington treated his slaves fairly as the humans they are. There were cruel slave owners who treated slaves as property and then there were slave owners who treated their slaves like humans. And even after the civil war you can tell which slave owners were which type by the fact the former slaves that were treated like humans actually tried to return to the families they were working for. Sure they could just be trying to return to the life they knew, but they could have done that with a different family if they were treated as property by that family
    I don't approve slavery, but I have respect to slave owners that treated their slaves as human beings. Especially those that treated slaves as part of their family because by the way the slaves were treated, they might as well only be slaves by title and nothing else.

    Nothing more amusing than modern people expressing their moral outrage over slavery. Most slave owners would have far greater legitimate reason to be revolted by our morality than we of theirs. Slavery was not a 'stain' or an 'original sin'. It was an entirely valid economic system with an ancient history in human society. Europeans did not invent it. Nor did the practice it because of racism. For most of human history Europeans were the source of most slaves. It's great that we have developed an economic system not directly dependent on slavery, but that is the consequence of technology not morality.
