"Irei no Hi" (Memorial Day) is held annually on June 23rd to commemorate the end of the Battle of Okinawa.
On this day in 1945, the fighting ceased, after many lives were lost.
Today, to reaffirm the importance of peace, we visited the Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters.
This bunker was where the military leaders of the time fought to the very end, and the tension and difficult conditions of the war are still palpable.
This site, where approximately 4,000 soldiers met their tragic end, has preserved rooms such as the commander's office and operations room, serving as an important war relic that conveys the horrors of war and the magnitude of human sacrifice.
As we tour the bunker, let's reflect on the terror of war and the preciousness of peace, and remember the events of the past.
