    I was about 12 when I came home from school and dad told me he bought a John Deere, I ran as fast as I could to the machine shed to see the new 4020. The disappointment was extreme on my face when I saw one of these inside, I cussed that tractor every time I drove it until I left the farm. Thanks dad, now I know I spent hours in the field on something very few men have had the memories of doing

      Your dad was smart. For tillage work, the 830 was a better choice. It pulled as much as the 4020 on less fuel and it cost less money. Don't get me wrong, the 4020 is a great tractor. I have one and love it.

    @whb1965 Deere made their own pony motors including the 2 cylinder pony in the R diesel. Wisconson was never in the picture. I had a 70 D that gave me no trouble what so ever except the pony didn't like gas with ethanol.

    • @shannonburns6724
      @shannonburns6724 Před 3 lety +1

      You better rethink that. A friend of mine was in on the design of the R and Cat built the first bunch of donkey motors for the R. Some you could even see yellow paint on them in places that the dealers told potential buyers was primer. Deere farmed out the very expensive 2 banger donkeys then started making their own around late 1949. They came in to the assembly plant in boxes painted green. J. D. did not want anyone knowing where or who was making those donkey engines. You took the inspection plug out of the donkey flywheel, loosened the mag, and watched for the ign. Mark. They would run good on leaded gas. The carbs were nothing more that venturi velocity increasers. And they are almost impossible to find now. A guy in Danville, IL knows a bunch about R diesels. They used to have 2 when he was very young.

      The cranking engine should turn the diesel engine over until oil pressure registers on the gauge, before letting go of the decompression lever and then advancing the throttle.

    • @KOakaKO
      @KOakaKO Před 9 lety

      Yeah, they had electric starters as well. It was recommended by John Deere that tractors in colder, Northern, climates be purchased with the pony motor start option. In warm weather the diesel engines of the '50s could be started with the electric starter, but in cold weather it was an advantage to have the pony motor turning the diesel engine over until it was able to start.

      Deere used an isolated ground 12/24 volt system. Like it was 12 volt on one side of the tractor and 24 volt on the other. A effed up system. A friend of mine has converted them to 12 volt, or 24 volt depending on what the customer wants.

    • @danw6014
      @danw6014 Před 3 lety

      @@shannonburns6724 sort of. The starting and charging system were 24 volt and isolated from the tractor chassis. The auxiliary equipment was 12 volt and divided between the two batteries. Half of lights are actually negative ground. Problems occur when there is a short to the chassis in the starter or generator thus sending voltage though the chassis. You'll first notice the lights are brighter, and then there will be no lights at all.

    • @shannonburns6724
      @shannonburns6724 Před 3 lety

      @@danw6014, as I inducated, an effed up system from jump. Convert the whole pos system to 12 volt, get rid of all the junk, throw it in a pile and haul to scrap yard. Why do you think everyone got rid of series parallel circuits? Junk that never worked once it got someageon it. The electronics on most vehicles today works. Throw all that bullspit away, rewire to 12 neg grnd and forget it. Put a new denso alternator on it and starter neg ground and you have something. But not the spit it came out with.

    • @danw6014
      @danw6014 Před 3 lety

      @@shannonburns6724 well, because some people like to restore them back to original. Most people never understood how the system works and therefore couldn't figure out how to fix it when it gave them trouble. The system actually worked quite well if it was maintained, and the operator didn't crank the starter to the point of melting the insulation in the starter eventually shorting it out. I would however agree that converting it to 12v does make it easier to maintain and improves reliability especially if you use the tractor in question every day to run a feed cart to the milk cows like we did with a 3020 for many years.

      Not really if you took care of them and kept old gas out of them. Put diesel in the little canister, and if you changed the points in the mag. Once you knew how to properly set them, it was easy and they ran good. A guy in Danville, IL rebuilds them. He likes to get them running. He made an oil pan to run them with.
