Great review! I love this lens, bought the 2.8 as an upgrade, but when light is not an issue I reach for this as it is so much lighter and in decent light just as good and the build quality is just leaps ahead of others.
Totally agree!
i owned it for a year before the 70-200 f2.8 mkii came out. If money was no object I would have both. The f4 never let me down
Have it and love it! I was torn b/n this lens and the Tamron 70-180 mm for over an year. Decided to go with the Sony and don't regret it. Don't know why everyone makes a big fuss about it having an F/4 aperture. F/4 is more than enough for almost any situation if one takes in mind the ISO caps of the Sony cameras. Fast and responsive, easy zooming, beautiful bokeh at over 180mm, (almost) as sharp as the T180mm and the S70-200 f/2.8 (1st version), lighter and most importantly - way cheaper than the S/2.8. An excellent lens indeed! Unless one is a very high grade proffy photographer, this lens is perfect.
P.S. An excellent review, Pav! Cheers!
Well said!!
Thank you for watching
Professor pav taking us to school!!! Great vid dude!
Haha! What are you doing watching videos on CZcams???? Go back to the beach! 😉
I just ordered a used one I found for $550. can't wait to check it out. I was worried about the low light performance with the f4 but having the oss and ibis together, I figured it would probably handle it pretty well
nice one! it is not f1.4 prime but using common sense sense, this lens can do very well in low light
Good video...filled with great example photos.
Many thanks!
I have shot sport events, motorsport, cars and even skied with it in Alps. Like this lens a lot on both crop and FF camera.
It is a cracker!
Hi Pav, great review. I just wanted to ask, i am torn between this lens and the Tamron 70-180mm F2.8 Di III VXD Lens. Do you know how these compare?
Have you seen my review of the Tamron?: czcams.com/video/ZqNrL3EtpB0/video.html
In my opinion they are two different tools - Tamron has got wider aperture, more bokeh but this has got longer reach, internal zooming and stabilisation build in
@@PavSZ OK thank you. I think I will opt for this for the stabilisation
If I want to have bokeh background behind a full body person in a walkway, should I get F0.95 in 35mm or 50mm? Does Sony 70-200mm F4 MACRO OSS G II able to do that as well? Is there usage for declicked aperture ring? I do hope the F0.95 lens has click and declick options, focus on a something then focus on everything in the scene seem like a possible and good videography method. Is there other focal lengths of lenses has F0.95 too?
I plan to get Sony A7RV with 70-200mm F4 MACRO OSS G II with 2X tele converter and just use standard Yellow iPhone 15 to shoot closer stuffs but thought to get 16-35mm F4 G PZ too because don't want to waste such high quality camera not to shoot closer stuffs too and I not a bokeh person because I like my photo and video to have story and creativity in them, but I thought to get one of the cheap F0.95 lens too because I have some creative usage ideas with it, should I get the tele first or all 3 together? Do A7RV need a bit extension grip for your pinky, can the new grip come with A7CR usable on A7RV? And does using a yellow camera neck strap is danger for potential theft to notice? And does apply skin on camera a good idea, do you do it?
Should we just shoot in 1080p because do we really watch 4K and able to tell the differences plus it give larger storage space for you to manage and spend on too?
Also, have you wonder like many things in life, why put so many effort just to take photos and videos and not just use phone camera to record here and there if it's not your primary work and also your content not all will get pass down and value later but lose in time plus a lot places and things you take photos already took by many others even you value art?
And what camera setup you bring in everyday life and travel, some people use less bulky and performance camera for their own life but use fancy gears for clients and travel, why, isn't everyday life is most parts of our life which is important too and shouldn't discount to document them in high quality forms?
you have to understand how it works before buying more lenses.
f0.95 are OK but extremely hard to keep sharp, especially when filming video. You will not get a lot of depth of filed shooting a full person with 35mm, a bit more with 50mm but not much more. Shooting photography, you could cheat and shoot 12 photos in rows of 3 closer to the subject and stitch them together in post to get super dof but generally speaking, longer the range of the lens and closer you are to your subject, more blurred background you are going to get.
70-200 f4 might work. If you shoot at 200mm.
With the Tamron 28-200, 200mm is at f5.6 and it’s still a pretty sharp lens.
Do you think that the extra stop of light on the 70-200 will make enough difference?
I love the Tamron 28-200 and I have proven that it is a very capable lens in its own right but this is in a different class all together. Better build and optical quality, internal zooming and build in stabilisation
Which one would you choose for a nature and landscape where a flare resistance also plays an important role - Sony 70-200/4 or Tamron 70-180? I'm somehow torn between the two.
I'd go for Tamron personally
@@PavSZ I have already acquired this Tammy, it is really amazing :)
i love to take stage photoraphy and consider to buy tele lens, should i buy 70-200 f4 Macro G2 or tamron 70-180 f2.8? or do u have any recommendation sir?
Only you can decide. Tamron has got a newer version out now as well and it is the fastest out of these.
Latest Sony cameras can deal with higher ISOs better though. I can't say which one is the best for you as it would hugely depend on your experience, camera, how you are going to use it and your budget
Thank you for this content :)
Glad you enjoy it! Thank you for watching it
I love his lens but, I wish that there were a lightweight APSC version to pair up with the Sigma 18-50mm. I'd give up the all-metal build and the OSS if it were considerably lighter. I like carrying two APSC cameras for travel because of the insurance factor, in case I break a camera body when traveling. I broke a Canon DSLR climbing up a ridge in Alaska but, my second body saved the trip photographically. I have the 70-350mm Sony but I am not in love with the variable aperture of his lens.
there never was a lightweight 70-200 ... yet. However there are lenses like Tamron 17-70 or even 50-400mm
@@PavSZ I have the tam 17-70. It’s a fantastic lens. Do you think it would be worth buying this lens you reviewed if I already have the tam 17-70?
Hello, how do you make a nice photo edit, do you have an app?
I use Adobe Lightroom and I use my own presets. They will be available to buy soon
love it !!!
Thanks for lending it to me for this review!
How about the sharpness, is it enough or worst??
worse than what?
I think it is as sharp as it gets. My samples prove it
worth to buy new in 2023 for 800 $ ?? :) i use Sony a7c
I think so
Q: I would like to do street portrait photography but don’t want to ask people - spontaneous. You think the 70-200 f4 be perfect ?
it might be perfect but if you really want to do it from the distance check out Sigma big zooms (I have reviewed them all here)
yes, but there is also the tamron 70-180 f/2.8
there is
@@PavSZ and what do you think about Tamron 70-180 vs Sony 70-200 f4?
@@lorenzo4262 I have reviewed 70-180 previously: czcams.com/video/ZqNrL3EtpB0/video.html
They are totally different tools in my opinion. Sony is stabilised and f4 - you also get slightly longer reach. Tamron is f2.8
@@PavSZ regarding af Speed and accuracy in tracking, for sports, which Is Better?
This lens is great sharper than sharp and 2.8 argument is not a reason to dismiss it is only 0ne stop! One stop today is not a problem with cameras today.
Absolutely true
Got this for 690 dols. MINT. Better than my old nikon 70-200 f2.8.
nice one!
The problem i have is that here in Brasil everytning is just EXPENSIVE.
☹
I am going to see if I can find a used f2.8. This is going to be a monkey lens for me, and I can't get monkeys into good light, nor can I get them to hold still.
Great lens
The focusing system is outdated and manual focusing sucks since its not linear focus. I wouldn’t pay more than 700 dollars for it
there is no current Sony or Sigma or Tamron lenses for Sony-E with linear focus (apart from 90mm macro). This lens works very well on a7IV, no issues focusing for me at all
Seriously ? It doesn't even comes close to Tamron 70-180 and costs more !
it is cheaper new than the Tamron here in UK right now.
I do love the Tamron and I have reviewed it here: czcams.com/video/ZqNrL3EtpB0/video.html but .... this has got longer reach, zooms internally and it is stabilised. They are both excellent but they are different tools for different jobs
