    🏁😄✌
    I am so happy to have completed this 3-TURNTABLE shoot-out for all of you!! Each of these is in the price range of US$400-450. I have again, bought ALL three of them with my own monies, just as what I have done with the Group A, B, C, D, etc Cartridges and Phonostages' shoot-outs and reviews.
    This is because I want total honesty, freedom of speech, unbeholden to any manufacturer/retailer. We are all consumers, and we deserve the best for our hard-earned money.
    If I want to do it well, do it all the way, 100%. Spending such money, I had to grit my teeth again purchasing all three of these decks this time. Tough as it always has been (i am not rich), but i think, if i don't do it, may be nobody would. So dearest friends, *let me take the sacrifice again, and do this for all of you :-D * As long as I can afford it, I WILL continue to do my utmost best, and I am very happy to do so.
    I purchased all three decks back in early July just immediately after my Japan trip. Once back, i had been running all three decks, setting them up nicely, checking their alignment parameters, timing each for a burn-in time of 100 hours, auditioning them A-B-C-A-B-C-...-wise going back and forth, back and forth, making sure their sonic parameters are compared in detail and expeditiously.
    I have actually sort of prepared a "script" in my mind back in May before i had purchased the 3 decks, preparing for the Debut Carbon DC to walk all over the other two decks: the Rega Planar 1 and the Sony PS-HX500, by virtue of the former's carbon fibre tonearm and a cartridge worth US$100. HOWEVER, my oh my, was I wrong:
    After running them in, and getting to A-B-C-A-B-C-...auditioning them, I was surprised to realise: marketing hype can be extremely misleading! -- There are MORE than meets the eye: OUR EARS easily can tell which manufacturer is dedicating the right efforts to make the best deck in the price range.
    This kind of honest-to-goodness performance, earns my respect. This winner, not just won comfortably and clearly, but by an extremely huge margin. It has been hard work, please enjoy the fruits of my labour, my dearest friends.
    Warmest Regards,
    ~ ian.
    Additional notes:
    Hearing my SL1200Mk5 with simply, the (*superb) Grado Green cartridge absolutely outperforms the Planar 1 by a huge degree. 1)Dynamics just so free flowing, up and down, much better than the P1, 2)Refinement...the treble and upper midrange is so much smoother AND composed, detailed and refined, 3)Bass extension is so much better, going easily deeper, and with lots of grunt and grip, articulation... 4)Soundstage and imaging are on a different level, the images are much better placed on the stage, believable... the whole presentation is carrying us from a good presentation in the P1, into the realms of live performance of high fidelity. Engaging, thrilling, engrossing. Of course the Nagaoka MP-110 carries us even further into the realms of high-end sound...and that is superb and affordable. US$450 for a used SL1200Mk3/3D/5 + US$120 for a Nagaoka MP-110. That is US$570+learnt skills of cartridge set-up as compared to a $400 Rega Planar 1. The former will also entail the purchase and use of a digital force gauge ~$!5, and a mirror cartridge protractor ~$15, and a digital USB 50-500x microscope ~$20 ...all purchasable online from ebay/amazon.
    Step by step, my friends:
    First:
    - a $450 Planar 1 for a plug-and-play, easy Vinyl entry quality deck. I advise not to buy anything else below that price as I have realized they all fall short of quality and do not give a sound that makes it worth the while to come over from digital. The Planar 1 gives us that first quality dynamic and coherent analogue sound.
    Then, when one is more confident:
    - a $450-$500 Technics SL1200Mk2/3/3D/5 with a $95 Grado Green or $120 Nagaoka MP-110. This will put us much forward into the realm of beautiful and magical analogue music, and where we easily abandon the faults of digital: pre-ring, ring, post-ring, time smear and phase shifts. We will so fall in love with the magical, absorbing and enthralling sounds of analogue with this set up.
    Sincerely,
    ~ ian.

    I owned the Project Carbon Debut DC and upgraded with the acrylic platter. I used a Cambridge Audio MM phono amp with Audioquest Colorado cables. Also got a cork upgrade. Total $887 w/ tax.
    I had buyers regret after two weeks. It was exactly what you said “it’s veiled and sounds like information is missing”. Additionally there were quality issues. The motor unit went out one month into ownership. The upgraded acrylic platter is slightly taller which caused the plastic cover to hit the edge of the platter when opening and closing. I fell sucker to the carbon tonearm. I think the Orotofon Red stylus maybe the culprit of the poor performance. I ended up selling the entire thing losing $300 in the process!
    I’m thinking of getting another turntable and that Rega sounds good!

      Hi my friend, thank you for coming by and saying hi🤗... I have made poor buys in the past as well, couldn't enjoy the deserved quality of music, and lost money as well. I am sure we will, still in the big picture, enjoy the journey and enjoy the learning. My older 71 yr old vinyl friend in the U.K., always taught me, "take your time. Don't rush. And ian, enjoy the journey, the whole of it."
      Take your time. Enjoy the journey.

      I have the Project Essential II, it came with Ortofon om5e that sounded very lacking.
      I installed an old Shure M70EJ I had and wow how it came to life!
      Last week I installed Grado red and of course it sounds even better!
      I have the Project for over a year and it performs very well.
      I think that it is better to compare sound quality only if all turntables have the same cartridge, but anyway this is a grate review, thumbs up!

    How on earth can Rega 1 with this default cartridge sound noticeably better, then Ortofon Red? Such an airy, big, balanced, engaging and clear performance from Rega, wow!! I had a gut feeling that I shouldn’t go with Pro-Ject, and buy some Rega instead. But all reviewers kept saying that turntable is, basically, its cartridge. It’s false, I suppose. Some info: 1 - Tim Maia was the best Brazilian Soulman ever. But you may find "Banda Black Rio" as a soul band for your information and delight; 2 - Gal Costa still alive, recording and with several shows thorughout Brazil territory. She´s a "voice with image attached", as said by Roberto Menescal. Please check on youtube more about Laurindo Almeida, Luiz Bonfa and Baden Powell (bossa nova), Jacob do Bandolin, Zé Menezes and Pixinguinha (Chorinho), João Donato, Leny Andrade and Pery Ribeiro (new bossa and jazz). Ian never disappoints! After the fiasco with the AT's stylus angle in the previous batch, first thing we see here is stylus and cartridge alignment info. If the basics ain't right, how can the rest be (Sony!)? Reading in the forums, a few folks have complained about their Rega inducing microphonic feedback, but I guess that didn't happen here, which is a good thing.
    We audioholics are always tempted to swap in an Empire cartridge, or Blackgate caps, or boutique wiring into whatever in hope of improvement. The rest of the world would like to simply enjoy the music with confidence that they are getting fair value for the money spent for the equipment to hear it with. Let's not underestimate what Ian has done here and for whom!
    Back in the '70s, I dated a girl who drove a Ford Capri (German built, Bosch electrics). She loved the car because "It does what I want it to do!" Such a simple, yet revealing statement! When I discuss this with other car guys, I point out the failure of most manufacturers to read the change in the market swinging to single women (and other folks) who couldn't be fiddling with their car's maintenance. Detroit kept doing the same old thing and went mostly bankrupt. The Japanese started giving people that worked right, "out of the box" and ended up dominating.
    In audio, real people buy a turntable or an amp, or speakers; not a hobby piece to be adjusted and preened or constantly upgraded.
    Ian is putting the burden of quality back on the manufacturers, where it has always belonged.

    • @HiViNywschannel
      @HiViNywschannel  Před 7 lety +10

      Brother!!! Hope you are doing well with your Thorens!!!! My word, you speak extremely well, and elucidated the whole matter so well!!!!!! Thank you for bringing the Ford Capri, about fiddling, about "out of the box", and being so understanding to another HUGE set of population out there (non-audioholics) !!!! They do not want what we want(and treat as a hobby)!!! Steven Covey: "Seek First to understand, then be understood"... yes first we need to understand the thinking of the 95% of vinyl users... and only then can we all be together strong and grow each other's passion for vinyl music, and this warm community!!! *Brother, i am very touched by your extremely wise words. Wow, this is certainly one of the finest reviews in the wide web out there and perhaps even a bench mark on review technique. As far as the comparison between the different players is concerned, I am not sure how much the type and quality of cartridge has to do with it. It would have been nice if there was a review comparing these three players with the same cartridge, narrowing down the cartridge bias problem. That would prove if your tone arm construction theory differences is correct.

      The 2M Red and die cast platter are the biggest things affecting the Pro-Ject Debut. Minor things that are easily fixed. Definitely easier than addressing the poorly thought out magnetic anti-skating "feature" on the cheaper Rega tables. That and the tendency for the cheaper P1 and P2 to have platter wobble these days.

    • @christopherorman5769
      @christopherorman5769 Před 4 lety

      @@hochhaul I don't think that is the difference. The Project tonearm isn't as good. With the Rega, you are buying it for the tonearm. On his other videos he shows how to deal with the antiskate on the Rega, but it isnt like the Project has a better antiskate setup. If your goal is tone and sound, I think the Rega is the best choice. There will always be quality control issues at this price range, but good point about the platter.

      David bowie Dear Buddy💪😄, yes, indeed: the others look generic: sony is made in PRC (likely an oem factory), while the ProJect has almost no turntable science and engineering in-house but outsources them (they thus only do manufacturing and marketing)...even the ProJect team came by to Singapore to talk to the possible retailers, telling them that ProJect "does not make the best sounding turntables, but they ensure that their turntables will sell well". The retailers recounted these things to me. One of them eventually land up as one the dealers as well. But he is really frank about it to this date and stood by it. My mom would often bring new albums home before they were released (the corners were usually cut off on the covers to indicate "not for resale").
    Sadly, the albums were lost over the years, as was my love for vinyl when the digital age hit in the 80's, and I moved on to compact disc. Lately considering getting back into vinyl again, trying to decide on an entry level TT, I came across this review.

    Ian - I had the opportunity to review side-by-side my Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC with the Rega Planar 1. Your assessment was spot on with my experience. I was shocked by the P1. It revealed way more detail, able to dig out subtle details that was all but lost in the veil of the Carbon DC, which incidentally had the Nagaoka MP-110 mounted. There was way more of the X-Factor that you speak of, in one of your other reviews, coming from the P1. Sounds so good that I'm starting to question if I want to bother putting the Nagaoka MP-110 on the P1. I played my usual favorite albums and I just could not stop smiling. Many of the pieces sending chills through my spine, making the music so much more involved and emotional. While the Carbon DC is indeed a nice unit, I'm much more delighted with the P1 as it significantly suits my tastes better. I am really surprised about the difference in the sound when you consider that I am listening to it through CZcams's compression and the speakers in the laptop I'm using.
    I have a Pro-ject Debut 2, although upgraded with the Henley Audio belt upgrade (which made a huge difference to the rumble), and use my vintage Ortofon VMS20e mk2 and a heavy rubber mat to make up the difference in height rather than the OM5 that it came with, and I was surprised about how bad the Pro-ject Debut Carbon sounded in this review.
    I wonder quite how Pro-ject justify their prices now. I bought my Debut 2 back in 2002, and it cost me £120 with the OM-5 (I found the receipt recently), which was widely regarded as a real bargain at the time, so I wonder how current Pro-ject Debut turntables are now in the £300 range, and don't appear to sound any better. I am very pleased with the sound of my older Debut, although I always hankered after a vintage Rega Planar 2 with it's glass platter.
    I'm also intrigued how you avoid the CZcams music take down? Is it careful choice of the tracks that you use?

I am very excited and it should arrive in a few days. Tolerances on that thing are even 200% tighter than a P1 or P2. BUT the P1 and P2 are still 2x tighter in tollerances than anything in their price range or even higher end tonearms from Linn.

    The question is always what is being reviewed, the table or the cartridge? The “winning” tables cartridge should then be used on the other two. If no difference, the tables themselves are equal and should be judged on ergonomics and quality of construction. If the winning table still wins, it was able to bring out the best in the “winning” cartridge and is the true winner. The AT generic equivalent of the carbon is under $30 making the upgrade a realistic option even for the entry level buyer. This also would have been more valid if listening was done on blind basis. Still very informative.

    Hello from the Netherlands! ✌️Thank you so much for this fantastic review! ❤️Not only did you teach me about the turntables, you have also helped me learn more about how to listen to music. 👌 Thank you! I do have a question: i love old shellac 78 rpm records, and I am looking for a good all-around turntable that allows me to play 78 shellacs as well as 33/45 vinyl with a stylus/cartridge change. (No space for two turntables.) I thought I would buy the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Esprit with its integrated speed box and acrylic platter, but after watching your review I am having second thoughts. Rega doesn’t offer a turntable with a 33/45/78 speed change, so that doesn’t seem like an option. I was also considering the Denon DP-400, the Audio Technica AT-120x, the Audio Technica LP-5x, the Thorens 170, or if it is worth the extra (2x!) money, the Technics 1500c. If you could help me understand which is the best all-around option between these and the Debut Carbon Esprit (or another turntable that I do not know!), I would very much appreciate it!! My best to you from Holland 🇳🇱

    A question for you, please. Are these differences as noticeable on a budget system as they are on a more expensive system, such as yours? Also, are they as noticeable when listening to records like old classic rock records bought at a used record store? Thank you so much.

      @HiViNywschannel  Před 7 lety

      Dear Brother, good question!! My budget system is a used pair of powered Dali Kubik Free+Extra speakers in my study room. Currently the Planar 1 IS doing duties there in this room :-D !!!... because I cannot take the obviously perceivable poorer facsimiles of music performances from the vinyl records played through the DC and HX500. One cannot take it when one knows he CAN, and have something much better, from a similarly priced option. Competition is good for us consumers :-D !!! Warmest Regards Brother!! Thank you for catching up again my friend!..and have a lovely Sunday ahead!!>.

    My first time on his reviews and he swayed me with his complete candor and objectivity showing no preferential treatment or loyalty to and brand. I was leaning toward a U-Turn Orbit Special but he totally changed my mind on that almost mistake. I would like to know if the P1 performs well with the NAGAOKA MP-150H. He said a higher priced cartridge may not improve performance but I was very impressed with the review he did on the NAGAOKA MP-150H. I currently have a Grado green but it is older and I want to upgrade my turntable and cartridge.

    In the UK the Rega Planar 1 is £248, the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon is £349 - £100 more (fit the RP1 upgrade pack and it's STILL cheaper than the DC!) The comparable model cost-wise to the RP1 is the Essential III at £239. I'm guessing the difference between the similarly priced RP1 and Essential III would have been even bigger!!! The RP1 uses a £25 cartridge and the DC uses the 2M red which costs £85 in the UK. Shows just how amazing value-for-money the Rega Planar 1 really is. The Pro-Ject turntables appear to be all flash and no substance, I was very disappointed with the Pro-Ject Essential III, which seems about right as the DC seems very poor too.

    • @HiViNywschannel

      Brother, thank you for laying things out neatly for all of us. *You are totally spot on with your analysis.* The above is what I have been thinking about for friends in the U.K. and in the EU. P1 vs DebutCarbon (nonDC) is already not a fair match because P1 is £100 cheaper than the DebutCarbon (nonDC), and the P1 is miles ahead of the DebutCarbonDC. You also had your honest experience with the Essential iii. It is okay, I congratulate you on the strength of your observations, learning, learning through mistakes and experience. I had my fair share too. And they have been costly in my 21 years of audiophilia :-D... such experience put us in good stead to help others, friends we want the best for, around us. Well done my friend, well done.

      😃🤜🤛😃🎶🎵🎶🎶yes please get the Planar1 over the other two... it is very, very good and the best in class by miles!!!!! It is a great platform to modify along the way. I am most happy to se that the three best things with Rega: 1)tonearm constructed with smoothness AND zero freeplay, and 2) its 24V motor now being used in the P1 as well(the 24V motor used not to be utilized in the Rega RP1 and only in the RP3). This motor runs quiet and coupled with 3)the very tight tolerance spindle housing, bearing and spindle, all make for a very quiet low Rumble operation which enables very high fidelity playback performance.
